The emotions which would naturally Spring from a real occasion are now only a reminiscence, and cannot with their reflected beams warm or illuminate the dull surface of my speech. Still the simple duty, now for then can be performed. At the inaugural ceremony held in this University on the twenty second day of September, 1869, it was the pleasure of your prede cessor, Mr. President, to induct me into office by the symbol of keys, significant of custody and guardianship. By the same token, thus [here the speaker took the keys from the table and placed them in the hands of President Sibley] delivered into your hands, I now formally surrender (as I have in fact already surrendered) the trust then committed to me.
