Book The Family Orchidaceae in the Serra do Japi S o Paulo state Brazil

Download or read book The Family Orchidaceae in the Serra do Japi S o Paulo state Brazil written by Emerson Ricardo Pansarin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents a floristic survey of orchid species occurring in the Serra do Japi in São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. The region studied is strategically placed in the transitional zone between interior semi-deciduous mesophytic forests and the Atlantic forest, presenting species from both formations and is characterized by semi-deciduous mesophytic forests, altitudinal forests and rocky outcrops. In the Serra do Japi the orchid family is represented by 125 species distributed among 61 genera. The most representative genus is Epidendrum, followed by Oncidium and Habenaria. Most of the species occur as epiphytes, while 40 species are terrestrial, 31 species are rupicolous, two are hemi-epiphytes and only one is myco-heterotrophic. Although the orchid diversity is high, the region has been affected by anthropogenic disturbances, making the preservation and integrated study of the diversity present in the Serra do Japi an urgent necessity, with social, economic and preservationist aspects.

Book Orchids of Tropical America

Download or read book Orchids of Tropical America written by Joe E. Meisel and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orchids of Tropical America is an entertaining, informative, and splendidly illustrated introduction to the orchid family for enthusiasts and newcomers seeking to learn about more than 120 widespread orchid genera. Joe E. Meisel, Ronald S. Kaufmann, and Franco Pupulin bring alive the riot of colors, extraordinary shapes, and varied biology and ecology of the principal orchid genera ranging from Mexico and the Caribbean to Bolivia and Brazil. Orchids, likely the most diverse family of plants on earth, reach their peak diversity in the tropical countries of the Western Hemisphere, including, for example, more than 2,500 species in Brazil and 4,000 in Ecuador. The book also highlights reserves in the American tropics where travelers can enjoy orchids in the wild. Whether you journey abroad to see these unique plants, raise them in your home, or admire them from afar, this book offers fascinating insights into the diversity and natural history of orchids. Beyond the plant and flower descriptions, Orchids of Tropical America is packed with informative stories about the ecology and history of each genus. Pollination ecology is given in detail, with an emphasis on how floral features distinctive to the genus are linked to interaction with pollinators. This book also features information on medicinal and commercial uses, notes on the discoverers, and relevant historical data. The easy-to-use identification system permits quick recognition of the most common orchid groups in Central and South America. Genus descriptions are given in plain language designed for a nonscientific audience but will prove highly useful to advanced botanists as well. Descriptions focus on external morphology, and great care has been taken to ensure the guide is useful in the field without reliance on microscopes or dissections. Equally valuable as a field guide, a desktop reference, or a gift, Orchids of Tropical America will make an excellent addition to any orchid lover’s library. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1818, William Cattley succeeded in flowering one of the first species of the genus that would bear his name. These first cattleyas are the classic cattleyas, whose form defined the essence of tropical orchids for generations to come. Indeed, the color of their flowers became known as "orchid." In this helpful and informative book, each classic Cattleya species is described in fascinating detail, and its role in breeding programs is elucidated. All that is required to appreciate and grow the large-flowered cattleyas successfully is included. Cultivation, humidity and watering, fertilizing, propagation, and diagnosing and treating problems are detailed, making this volume valuable for both veteran orchid enthusiasts and those who simply love these beautiful flowers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Naturalist in Brazil: The Record of a Year's Observations of Her Flora, Her Fauna, and Her People He who wishes to derive both enjoyment and profit from a voyage to Brazil must above all become intimate with the natural life of the country. After all, what is it that he most of all wants to know? He wants, I think, to know the name of those great scarlet flowers; and what sort of palms those are that overlook the housetops; and how one can best enjoy a sight of monkeys, parrots and humming birds. But as yet he has no conception of the wonders which are revealed by an insight into the lives of the orchids and the insects! The best Brazilian Baedeker will therefore be a guide to the flora and fauna of Brazil. And the task which the author has proposed to himself in the writing of this book is to produce such a guide. But the glittering virgin forests, the sun-steeped wildernesses, the sea-beaches overshadowed by rustling palm-trees, invariably offered me, when I went forth each day with renewed expectation, so much that was new and lovely and fascinating, that I very soon formed the resolve to share what I had felt and seen with those for whom a voyage to Brazil is impracticable. My own visit to that country followed upon an invitation from the Government of the State of Pernambuco; my task was to combat the insects which were injuring the plantations. My work led me first into the interior of the north eastern States, and later southwards, to 850 Paulo and Jahl'i. It not only gave me an insight into all the branches of Brazilian agriculture and colonization; it led also to friendly intercourse With the Brazil ians, so that I was able to complete my description of the country and its civilization by some account of the character and the customs of its human inhabitants. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of every seven flowering plants on earth is an orchid. Some are stunningly over the top; others almost inconspicuous. The Orchidaceae is the second most widely geographically distributed family, after the grasses, yet remains one of the least understood. This book will profile 600 species, representing the remarkable and unexpected diversity and complexity in the taxonomy and phylogeny of these beguiling plants, and the extraordinary means they have evolved in order to ensure the attraction of pollinators. Each species entry includes life-size photographs to capture botanical detail, as well as information on distribution, peak flowering period, and unique attributes--both natural and cultural. The result is a work which will attract and allure, much as the orchids themselves do.
