Book Orchids as Aphrodisiac Medicine or Food

Download or read book Orchids as Aphrodisiac Medicine or Food written by Eng Soon Teoh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-17 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you know that Vanilla was formerly served as aphrodisiac by Cassanova and Madam Pompadour, and Elizabeth I loved its flavor? This is the first book that provides a complete worldwide coverage of orchids being employed as aphrodisiacs, medicine or charms and food. Opening with an in-depth historical account of orchids (orchis Greek testicle), the author describes how the Theory of Signatures influenced ancient herbalists to regard terrestrial orchid tubers as aphrodisiacs. Doctors and apothecaries promoted it during the Renaissance. Usage of orchids in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Indian Ayurvedic Medicine; by Tibetan yogins and Amchi healers for longevity pills, tonics and aphrodisiacs; by Africans to prepare 'health promoting' chikanda or as survival food when lost in the Australian bush are some highlights of the book. Early settlers in America and the East Indies often relied on native remedies and employment of orchids for such needs is described. Also covered are the search for medicinal compounds by scientists, attempts to prove the orchid's efficacy by experiment and the worry of conservationists.

Download or read book Regards sur l histoire de la Cara be written by Association of Caribbean Historians. Conference and published by Ibis Rouge. This book was released on 2001 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Forest Politics in Suriname

Download or read book Forest Politics in Suriname written by Marcus Colchester and published by International Books. This book was released on 1995 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suriname has suddenly come into the international limelight as its government hands out logging and mining concessions in the rainforest interior to foreign companies. Local communities, outraged at having been excluded from negotiations about their land, have declared regional autonomy, with armed state police already guarding mines and shooting local people who are trying to reach their farms and forests. Suriname developed as a Dutch colony, exporting mainly sugar. However, the plantation economy has given way to bauxite mining and alumina production, of strategic importance to US and European war economies. Independent since 1975, the country's economy is dominated by two mining giants and remains dependent on Dutch development aid. Political parties are reliant on special interest patronage networks based on racial divisions. Attempts to break its economic dependency have led Suriname to civil war, economic ruin and withdrawal of aid. Desperate for cash, the government is now selling off the forest and mineral resources to foreign companies, undermining the people's sources of livelihood and food, and ruining the land. This is a comprehensive analysis of the background to the crisis and the present state of affairs of forest politics in Suriname. The author's detailed recommendations are directed towards the survival of the forest people, and the need to freeze timber concessions until the mechanisms to monitor, regulate and collect revenue from existing concessions for mining and road building have been improved.
