Book excerpt: The prize-winning history of the orchid: “an engaging and enlightening account of one of the Earth's most mythologized botanical wonders” (Richard Conniff, author of House of Lost Worlds). At once delicate, exotic, and elegant, orchids are beloved for their singular, instantly recognizable beauty. Found in nearly every climate, the many species of orchid have had varying forms of significance in countless cultures over time. Following the orchid’s journey from Ancient Greek medicine to twentieth century detective novels, science historian Jim Endersby explores the flower’s four recurring themes: science, empire, sex, and death. Orchids were a symbol of the exotic riches sought by 19th century Europeans in their plans for colonization. They became subjects of scientific scrutiny for Charles Darwin, who investigated their methods of cross-pollination. As Endersby shows, orchids—perhaps because of their extraordinarily diverse colors, shapes, and sizes—have also bloomed repeatedly in films, novels, plays, and poems, from Shakespeare to science fiction. Featuring many gorgeous illustrations from the collection of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Orchid: A Cultural History was awarded the Watson Davis and Helen Miles Davis Prize by the History of Science Society. It is an enchanting tale not only for gardeners and plant collectors, but anyone curious about the flower’s obsessive hold on the imagination in history, cinema, literature, and more.

  • Author : Welby Richmond Smith
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN : 1452902550
  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book Orchids of Minnesota written by Welby Richmond Smith and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orchids are often thought of as rare, fragile "objets d'art," existing only in steamy tropical forests or in the greenhouses of the well-to-do. In fact, orchids occur worldwide from the arctic tundra to Tierra del Fuego. Minnesota is the home of 43 native species of orchids, and Orchids of Minnesota is the only book devoted specifically to their life history and study. Orchids occur in every county in Minnesota and in essentially every terrestrial habitat type. Both a field guide and an illustrated flora of scholarly quality, Orchids of Minnesota includes a section on the biology of orchids (morphology, ecology, and geographical distribution), a key to the orchid genera and species, and a description of each of the state's 43 species. Welby R. Smith offers comprehensive descriptions and information on the specific habitat of each species and interesting facts of its natural history. In addition, the book provides a detailed line drawing and photograph, a North American range map, and a Minnesota county distribution map for each species. Although regional in its focus, Orchids of Minnesota will be of interest to both national and international audiences. The detailed pen-and-ink drawings by Vera Ming Wong are beautifully executed and botanically accurate, revealing that even the most common orchid species are uncommon when compared to other plants.

Book Orchid Biology Reviews and Perspectives X

Download or read book Orchid Biology Reviews and Perspectives X written by Tiiu Kull and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-01-21 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As stated many times before the purpose of Orchid Biology, Reviews and Perspectives (OB) is to present reviews on all aspects of orchids. The aim is not to balance every volume, but to make a balanced and wide ranging presentation of orchids in the series as a whole. The chapters in this, the last volume of the series, range over a number of topics which were not covered before. Singapore is justly famed for its orchids. They can be seen on arrival (or dep- ture) in its modern, highly efficient and comfortable Changi Airport and on the way from it to town. Vanda Miss Joaquim, the first hybrid to come from Singapore became its National Flower. This natural hybrid can be seen on its currency, stamps, and public and private decorations. Many excellent breeders, starting with Prof. Eric Holttum who bred the first man made hybrid (Spathoglottis Primrose), produced numerous magnificent hybrids and won countless awards in Singapore and elsewhere. These hybrids served to enrich the country’s orchid mystique. In the opening chapter of this volume Dr. Teoh Eng Soon (Western style: Eng Soon Teoh), himself a prize winning orchid breeder, grower and author writes about some of the breeders who contributed to the Singapore orchid fame. Prof. Hans Fitting was one of the best known plant physiologists of his time. As a young man he studied the effects of pollen on orchid flowers.
