Book Orbital Dynamics of Space Nuclear Propulsion Systems

Download or read book Orbital Dynamics of Space Nuclear Propulsion Systems written by Lara Elaine Schoeffler and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space nuclear propulsion systems comprising low and continuous thrust propulsion technology are of critical importance to deep space exploration. This analysis presents numerical calculations of orbital trajectories of three propulsion systems: nuclear electric, nuclear thermal, and nuclear fusion. The mission analysis utilizes existing characteristics, like thrust, from reference material to determine if a two-year roundtrip mission to Mars is feasible with any of these propulsion systems. Ultimately, the nuclear thermal propulsion and nuclear fusion propulsion missions are able to meet the rapid mission time requirement with roundtrips of 422 days and 630 days, respectively. The Mars surface stays are short: 30 days with nuclear thermal propulsion and 200 days with a nuclear fusion spacecraft. This study makes a recommendation for the technology best suited for a near-term crewed Mars mission while also advocating the need for additional design and study on both the nuclear thermal and conceptual nuclear fusion systems.

Book Future Spacecraft Propulsion Systems and Integration

Download or read book Future Spacecraft Propulsion Systems and Integration written by Paul A. Czysz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-30 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The updated and expanded third edition of this book focuses on the multi-disciplinary coupling between flight-vehicle hardware alternatives and enabling propulsion systems. It discusses how to match near-term and far-term aerospace vehicles to missions and provides a comprehensive overview of the subject, directly contributing to the next-generation space infrastructure, from space tourism to space exploration. This holistic treatment defines a mission portfolio addressing near-term to long-term space transportation needs covering sub-orbital, orbital and escape flight profiles. In this context, a vehicle configuration classification is introduced covering alternatives starting from the dawn of space access. A best-practice parametric sizing approach is introduced to correctly design the flight vehicle for the mission. This technique balances required mission with the available vehicle solution space and is an essential capability sought after by technology forecasters and strategic planners alike.

Book Advanced Space Propulsion Systems

Download or read book Advanced Space Propulsion Systems written by Martin Tajmar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-08 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space propulsion systems have a great influence on our ability to travel to other planets or how cheap a satellite can provide TV programs. This book provides an up-to-date overview of all kinds of propulsion systems ranging from classical rocket technology, nuclear propulsion to electric propulsion systems, and further to micro-, propellantless and even breakthrough propulsion, which is a new program under development at NASA. The author shows the limitations of the present concepts and how they could look like in the future. Starting from historical developments, the reader is taken on a journey showing the amazing technology that has been put on hold for decades to be rediscovered in the near future for questions like how we can even reach other stars within a human lifetime. The author is actively involved in advanced propulsion research and contributes with his own experience to many of the presented topics. The book is written for anyone who is interested in how space travel can be revolutionized.
