Book Eccentric Orbits

Download or read book Eccentric Orbits written by John Bloom and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2016-06-07 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Good corporate drama . . . an enlightening narrative of how new communications infrastructures often come about.” —The Economist, “A Book of the Year 2016” In the early 1990s, Motorola developed a revolutionary satellite system called Iridium that promised to be its crowning achievement. Its constellation of 66 satellites in polar orbit was a mind-boggling technical accomplishment, surely the future of communication. The only problem was that Iridium the company was a commercial disaster. Only months after launching service, it was $11 billion in debt, burning through $100 million a month and crippled by baroque rate plans and agreements that forced calls through Moscow, Beijing, Fucino, Italy, and elsewhere. Bankruptcy was inevitable—the largest to that point in American history. And when no real buyers seemed to materialize, it looked like Iridium would go down as just a “science experiment.” That is, until Dan Colussy got a wild idea. Colussy, a former head of Pan-Am now retired and working on his golf game in Palm Beach, heard about Motorola’s plans to “de-orbit” the system and decided he would buy Iridium and somehow turn around one of the biggest blunders in the history of business. Impeccably researched and wonderfully told, Eccentric Orbits is a rollicking, unforgettable tale of technological achievement, business failure, the military-industrial complex, and one of the greatest deals of all time. “Deep reporting put forward with epic intentions . . . a story that soars and jumps and dives and digresses . . . [A] big, gutsy, exciting book.” —The Wall Street Journal, “A Top 10 Nonfiction Book of 2016” “Spellbinding . . . A tireless researcher, Bloom delivers a superlative history . . . A tour de force.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

She can hardly be blamed for drinking one (or a few) too many cocktails when out with her besties in an attempt to cheer herself up. Sometime in the foggy wee hours, she recklessly emails her unrequited high-school crush, Colin Yarmouth, who is now a successful attorney harboring regrets of his own. When she receives an intriguingly friendly (not to say flirty) response, her acute embarrassment is overcome only by her fervent curiosity—what would a hottie like Colin be like as a grown up? The two forge an unlikely friendship that's unmistakably headed for more. Colin's tales of his own woeful break-up become fodder for Gracie's fertile imagination and her current work-in-progress takes off. With the deadline looming and her checking account dwindling, Gracie has no idea that borrowing Colin's story could wreak havoc on her life, her career, and her own chance at happily-ever-after...

Book From the Streets to the Stars

Download or read book From the Streets to the Stars written by Henry J. Dinenno and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-10-26 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an inspirational, humorous description of my life from a hard core juvenile delinquent to a top executive in a major corporation. It begins on the streets of New York City and recounts the thievery, property damage, weapons and gang wars that defined my juvenile years. It recalls a transitional phase where the death of my grandfather, a move from New York, my family, my friends, and the heavy handed brothers of Notre Dame High School gradually erased the influence of my juvenile years. My work during the design phase of both Project Apollo and Space Shuttle, and the unbelievably exciting launches at the Kennedy Space Center are covered with an insiders perspective on how these great teams dealt with successes and failures. Throughout, I reflect on how the experiences of my delinquent and transitional phases, and my renewed relationship with God, helped me to grow and to use my career successes to help others. Finally I describe a special invitation to the Planetary Congress of the Association of Space Explorers in Vienna where I spent several days with more than 80 astronauts and cosmonauts that were truly the stars of my world.

Planet Pomegranate is a collection of columns written by journalist Laura Christman for the Home & Garden section of the Record Searchlight, the daily newspaper in Redding, Calif. The pieces are a mix of conversations, observation, reflections and frustrations. Some related to the garden; some are not. Revealed are the stories of: -the spindly spring of tenacious Bermuda grass -the petticoat that joined the family -the pumpkin that perplexed a newsroom -the joyful journey of the wandering lemons -the greatest donkey that ever lived Planet Pomegranate explores the wonder of growing - whether it's in the garden or as a person. It is about growing stuff, growing up, staying curious and finding joy in simple things. And appreciating pomegranates - it's about that too.

Book Crafting Presence

Download or read book Crafting Presence written by Nicole B. Wallack and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays are central to students’ and teachers’ development as thinkers in their fields. In Crafting Presence, Nicole B. Wallack develops an approach to teaching writing with the literary essay that holds promise for writing students, as well as for achieving a sense of common purpose currently lacking among professionals in composition, creative writing, and literature. Wallack analyzes examples drawn primarily from volumes of The Best American Essays to illuminate the most important quality of the essay as a literary form: the writer’s “presence.” She demonstrates how accounting for presence provides a flexible and rigorous heuristic for reading the contexts, formal elements, and purposes of essays. Such readings can help students learn writing principles, practices, and skills for crafting myriad presences rather than a single voice. Crafting Presence holds serious implications for writing pedagogy by providing new methods to help teachers and students become more insightful and confident readers and writers of essays. At a time when liberal arts education faces significant challenges, this important contribution to literary studies, composition, and creative writing shows how an essay-centered curriculum empowers students to show up in the world as public thinkers who must shape the “knowledge economy” of the twenty-first century.
