Book excerpt: Excerpt from Orations and Speeches, Vol. 2 of 2 "I look upon the way of treaties, as a retiring from fighting like beasts, to arguing like men, whose strength should be more in their understandings than in their limbs." - Charles I. Elkon Basilike. "We daily make great improvements in natural - there is one I wish to see in moral - philosophy; the discovery of a plan that would induce and oblige nations to settle their disputes without first cutting one another's throats. When will human reason be sufficiently improved to see the advantage of this?" - Franklin. "La meme politique qui lie, pour leur bonheur, toutes les familles d'une nation les unes avec les autres, doit lier entre elles toutes les nations, qui sont des familles du genrc humain. Tous les hommes se communiquent, meme sans s'en douter, leurs maux et leurs biens, d'un bout de la terre a l'autre." - Bernardin De St. Pierre. "Only the toughest, harshest barbarism of past ages - War - remains yet to be vanquished by our innate anti-barbarism. There is a growing insight of its unlawfulness." - Jean Paul. "War is on its last legs; and a universal peace is as sure as is the prevalence of civilization over barbarism, of liberal governments over feudal forms. The question for us is only, How soon?" - Emerson. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Orations and Speeches on Various Occasions Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Edward Everett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Orations and Speeches on Various Occasions, Vol. 2 The short speeches made in England were nearly all in reply to toasts, in which complimentary reference was had to the diplomatic body generally, or to the American min ister, when he alone happened to be present. The usages Of society (the same in this respect on both sides Of the water) impose a certain character upon speeches made under such circumstances. A few Obvious topics Of remark are almost of necessity apt to be repeated. TO attempt to avoid such repetition would be an unprofitable, probably an unavailing, exercise of ingenuity; but I hope it will be thought that -i have not, in the speeches now alluded to, dwelt entirely in the commonplaces Of such occasions. Book The Public Orations of Demosthenes Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Public Orations of Demosthenes Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Wallace Pickard-Cambridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public Orations of Demosthenes, Vol. 1 of 2 I have made very little use of other translations; but I must acknowledge a debt to Lord Brougham's version of the Speeches on the Chersonese and on the Crown, which, though often defective from the point of view of scholarship and based on faulty texts, are (together with his notes) very inspiring. I have also, at one time or another, consulted most of the standard German, French, and English editions of Demosthenes. I cannot now distinguish how much I owe to each but I am conscious of a special debt to the editions of the late Professor Henri Weil, and of Sir J. E. Sandys, and (in the Speech on the Crown) to that of Professor W. W. Goodwin. I also owe a few phrases in the earliest speeches to Professor W. R. Hardie, whose lectures on Demosthenes I attended twenty years ago. My special thanks are due to my friend Mr. P. E. Matheson of New College, for his kindness in reading the proof-sheets, and making a number of suggestions, which have been of great assistance to me. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Orations and Speeches on Various Occasions, Vol. 1 It will be found that some of the addresses, being on the same or similar occasions or subjects, exhibit a considerable similarity in the train of remark, and even in the illustrations. This is. Particularly the case with the orations delivered at Concord and Lexington, on the nineteenth of April, 1825, and 1835. Such a similarity was scarcely to be avoided. The general plan of the two addresses is different, but they necessarily required some description of the same memorable incidents; and any attempt to avoid the repetition must have been at the sacrifice of topics consecrated to the occasion. Book Orations and Speeches on Various Occasions Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Orations and Speeches on Various Occasions Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by Edward Everett and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Orations and Speeches on Various Occasions, Vol. 4 The orations and speeches contained in the present volume were all delivered subsequent to July, 1858, with the exception of that on the Character of Washington, originally spoken on the 22d February, 1856, and repeated at intervals till the spring of 1861. It has never before been printed. The address entitled "Franklin the Boston Boy," and "The Causes and Conduct of the War," have also never appeared in type; that at the dinner to Prince Napoleon has been privately printed only; the remaining speeches are all republications, in some cases from newspaper reports, which never received the author's correction, and in which, therefore, some errors may be detected. The first three volumes contained no addresses of a political character. In accordance with what appears to have been the author's intention, the present volume comprehends two speeches partaking of that nature, - the fifteenth and fifty-fourth, on pages 235 and 698. They were both spoken long after the close of the author's official life, and are neither of them a contribution to partisan literature. The republication of other writings of Mr. Everett's, and a memoir of his life, are in contemplation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ohio's Silver-Tongued Orator, Vol. 1 of 2: Life and Speeches of General William H. Gibson There have been lives of men who have attained positions more conspicuous in the eyes of the world and stations more yearned after by the ambitious for public honors, whose story is not so interesting or worthy of a permanent record as that of General William Harvey Gibson. Taken as a whole, there is enough of pathos, romance, and tragedy, discovered in the events his life has touched to afford the plot of a great historical novel. We have simply endeavored to give the history of the man as we have found it by painstaking inquiry. Probably some incidents here recorded may appear trivial to the general public and of little moment to any who were not immediate friends and acquaintances of the General in the midst of his career. But life is made up largely of small happenings, and without them the life of no man would appear natural. The author, several months after General Gibson's death, wrote a short series of articles for a magazine concerning his life and public services, and it was at the solicitation of many of the orator's friends and admirers that a more elaborate biography was undertaken. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Famous Orations, Vol. 1 of 10 It'is now several years since I began to con sider the propriety of making a collection of the famous orations of the world for the benefit of students, and with that purpose in view, wher ever an opportunity offered, I have conferred with men who were able and Willing to give advice as to the selections. At first my intention was to use only enough orations for a single volume, but I afterward became convinced that the plan suggested to me by the publishers of this collection would be a better one, namely to select enough of the great orations to fill ten volumes, but so to group them as to permit of division into volumes arranged chronologically as to countries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Additional Speeches, Vol. 1 of 2: Addresses, and Occasional Sermons Several years ago I began to write a large work on the "Historical Development of Religion in the various Races of Mankind," hoping to publish the first volume long before this time. But during the last five years, my attention has been mainly directed to quite different pursuits, less genial to my nature and more foreign to my culture: events of the saddest character and most dangerous tendency have forced other and indispensable duties upon me. For the assaults on the natural Rights of man have been so continuous, made with such vigor, and so often successful, and the consequent demand of resistance thereto, on the part of all friends of Humanity so urgent, that I have been forced to defer the welcome toil of converting the Facts of past History into Ideas of present Consciousness, and therewith helping to build up nobler Institutions for the future.
