Book In the Cemetery of the Orange Trees

Download or read book In the Cemetery of the Orange Trees written by Jeff Talarigo and published by Etruscan Press. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As much a book of poetry as a novel, as much a symphony as a memoir, this is an extraordinary book from a writer at the top of his powers. Reminiscent of Berger and Calvino, Jeff Talarigo manages to capture the breadth and circumference of story-telling, while also giving us a privileged insight into the daily life and dreams of Gaza." —Colum McCann, Thirteen Ways of Looking In the mode of J. M. Coetzee’s Waiting for the Barbarians and Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, In the Cemetery of the Orange Trees engages poetic language, mythic themes, and childlike perspectives to offer an original approach to a conflict that has become hardened and polarized. These linked stories of an American’s experience in Gaza expose the seven-decade long Palestinian diaspora in a disquieting allegory of the clash between the occupied and the occupier. In a place where political posturing, bloody war, journalistic witness, and even patient negotiation have yielded so little understanding, we enter the cemetery of the orange trees, where urchins kite dead birds, goats utter wisdom, camels and donkeys huddle together, and merchandise magically passes underground through the tunnels of Gaza. But this is no fairy tale or bestiary. In the Cemetery of the Orange Trees is a waking, attentive dream-journal, leading us back to a place where hatred, strife, and even human language itself might sing. Jeff Talarigo is the author of two novels: The Pearl Diver and The Ginseng Hunter. He has lived in Gaza and Japan, and currently resides in Oakland, California.

Book excerpt: This is an extensive collection of inscriptions and available records for over 1,000 persons reported to have been interred at the historic Old Burying Ground, the cemetery of the First Presbyterian Church of Orange, Essex County, New Jersey. This compilation includes the complete inscriptions found in the unpublished handwritten report of 1847; transcriptions of visitation reports and obscure records from 1723 through 1888 and a brief history of the Old Burying Ground. Over 100 men who served in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the Civil War are designated. Burials and data of "free colored" families have been included. The interments are conveniently listed in alphabetical order by last name. Relevant notes have been added: birth dates, parentage, spouses, wills and human interest items. The historic Old Burying Ground was in use at least as early as 1723. Beginning as the "Mountain Society," the church served the Oranges and surrounding communities for over three hundred years. The present church edifice replaced an earlier church building destroyed by fire in 1927. Sadly, for economic reasons, the First Presbyterian Church closed its doors in 2010 and its future is unknown at this time.

Book New Jersey Cemeteries and Tombstones

Download or read book New Jersey Cemeteries and Tombstones written by Richard Francis Veit and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sweeping tour of New Jersey's burial sites from the seventeenth century through the dawn of the twenty-first, readers will discover how headstones are much more than place markers for the deceased. From the earliest memorials that were once used by Native Americans, to some of the elaborate structures of the present day, historians Richard F. Veit and Mark Nonestied use grave markers to tell an off-beat account of New Jersey's history that is both fascinating and unique. In detailed descriptions, the authors explain what cemeteries and their gravemarkers say about different individuals and the communities in which they lived. Images that decorate seventeenth-century headstones, such as skulls, hourglasses, and crossed bones, speak to the brevity of life in the colonial world. Eighteenth-century cemeteries reflect the distinctive cultures that sprang up in the state at that time, ranging from the unadorned marble markers used by Quakers, to rich brown sandstone used by settlers in the central and northern regions of New Jersey. By the Victorian era, markers were transformed into elaborate monuments and mausoleums as New Jerseyans honored their dead relatives with a cavalcade of obelisks, pillars, ornate statuary, and sculpture.Today's tombstones continue to mirror New Jersey society. A life-sized Mercedes Benz headstone in a Linden cemetery, for example, reflects the materialism of the new millennium. Also considered are modern-day novelties such as pet cemeteries and what they mean for modern culture.Having visited more than 900 state burial grounds, and interviewed dozens of owners of monument companies, this richly illustrated book is essential reading for history buffs and indeed anyone who has ever wandered inquisitively through his or her local cemeteries.
