Ce livre offre aux lecteurs une réflexion sur les principes méthodologiques revisités pour le bon usage des sources orales, mettant en avant les pièges qui guettent encore et toujours l'historien de terrain. Le recours nécessaire à d'autres disciplines que l'histoire a été clairement démontré. L'anthropologie et l'archéologie s'avèrent indispensables pour analyser les contextes d'énonciation ou pour éclairer des pans restés jusque-là inconnus de l'histoire des populations. Dans cet ouvrage, les auteurs proposent de nouvelles stratégies d'approche en tenant compte de l'évolution des terrains d'étude, liée à la disparition de certaines catégories d'informateurs. De nouveaux domaines de recherche peuvent encore être explorés comme le fait religieux par une étude des lieux de cultes, principalement les bois sacrés, et de leur environnement culturel. Les récits de vie permettent aussi de combler des vides importants sur l'histoire contemporaine. L'idée centrale est l'extension considérable de la gamme des sources non écrites utilisées et leur grande diversité : toponymes, anthroponymes, chants et autres contes ont été revisités. Les généalogies ont à nouveau été questionnées en croisant les sources et en s'interrogeant sur l'altération de ces listes, leur instrumentalisation et les enjeux de pouvoirs qui mènent à leur manipulation. Enfin, le lien entre documents écrits et traditions orales est à nouveau exploré, pour montrer les interférences existant entre les deux catégories. Ce livre présente ainsi un panorama large et diversifié de l'utilisation de l'oralité comme source d'histoire avec un avenir qui est loin d'être sombre. Cependant, l'urgence demeure de poursuivre les enquêtes de terrain et d'oeuvrer à la conservation des données orales recueillies. Il s'agit d'un véritable patrimoine immatériel que les chercheurs se doivent de récolter et de préserver.

Book excerpt: Religion in today’s Democratic Republic of Congo has many faces: from the overflowing seminaries and Marian shrines of the Catholic Church to the Islamic brotherhoods, from the healers of Kimban-guism to the televangelism of the booming Pentecostalist churches in the great cities, from the Orthodox communities of Kasai to the ‘invisible’ Mai Mai warriors in the brousse of Kivu. During the colonial period religion was no less central to people’s lives than it is today. More surprisingly, behind the seemingly smooth facade of missions linked closely to imperial power, faith and worship were already marked by diversity and dynamism, tying the Congo into broader African and global movements. The contributions in this book provide insight into the multifaceted history of the interaction between religion and colonization. The authors outline the institutional political framework, and focus on the challenge that old and new forms of slavery entailed for the missions. The atrocities committed at the time of the Congo Free State became an existential question for young Christian communities. In the Belgian Congo after 1908, more structural forms of colonial violence remained a key issue marking religious experiences. And yet, religion also acted as a bridge. The authors emphasize the role intermediaries such as catechists or medical assistants played in the African “appropriation” of Christianity. They examine the complex interaction with indigenous religious beliefs and practices, and zoom in on the part religions played in the independence movement, as well as on their reaction to independence itself. Coming at a moment when Belgium confronts its colonial past, this volume provides a timely reassessment of religion as a key factor.

The postcolonial paradigm, and the more recent decolonial paradigm, raise the issue of the universal: is the postcolonial the first phase of a new universalism, one which would be truly universal because it would be fully inclusive, or is it on the contrary the denial of all universalism, the triumph of the particular and of fragmentation? In addressing this issue Diagne and Amselle also tackle many related themes, such as the concepts of race, culture and identity, the role of languages in philosophy as practised in different cultural areas, the various conceptions of Islam, especially in West Africa, and the outlines of an Africa which can be thought of at the same time as singular and as plural. Each thinker looks back at his writings on these themes, comparing and contrasting them with those of his interlocutor. While Amselle seeks to expose the essentialist and culturalist logics that might underlie postcolonial and decolonial thought, Diagne consistently refuses to adopt the trappings of the Afrocentrist and particularist thinker. He argues instead for a total decentring of all thought, one that rejects all ‘centrisms’ and highlights instead branchings and connections, transfers, analogies and reciprocal influences between cultural places and intellectual fields that may be distant but are not distinct in space and time. This volume is a timely contribution to current debates on the postcolonial question and its new decolonial form. It will be of great interest to students and scholars in a variety of fields, from African studies and Black studies to philosophy, anthropology, sociology and cultural studies, as well as to anyone interested in the debates around postcolonial studies and decolonial thought

Book excerpt: Following the launching of jihad against Sarkin Gobir and other Hausa chiefs by Uthman dan Fodio, a renowned Muslim reformer, Yola became one of the focal points for Uthman's Movement south of the Lake Chad region. The leader was Modibbo Adama (1809-1847) and the emirate he formed was called Adamawa. The study analyses the factors which came into play in the creation and maintenance of the emirate out of a vast array of segmented units of authority. By the middle of the 19th century, Europeans started visiting the region in a general drive to abolish slave trade from its sources and substitute it with legitimate trade. Not contented with mere trade, European expeditions competed with one another to colonize the region for their respective governments. Lamido Zubeiru (1890-1901) refused to submit, but the British, French and Germans through European diplomatic channels partitioned the emirate in 1893 and 1894. The threat of Mahdism and the consolidation of Rabeh's power over Bornu and neighbouring kingdoms provided the Europeans additional reasons for waging war against the emirate and to overthrow almost a century of Fulani hegemony. The principal sources are oral tradition preserved in local chronicles and contemporary reports of European travellers, soldiers, administrators and Royal Niger Company officials.

Book excerpt: The three concepts mentioned in the title of this volume imply the contact between two or more literary phenomena; they are based on similarities that are related to a form of ‘travelling’ and imitation or adaptation of entire texts, genres, forms or contents. Transfer comprises all sorts of ‘travelling’, with translation as a major instrument of transferring literature across linguistic and cultural barriers. Transfer aims at the process of communication, starting with the source product and its cultural context and then highlighting the mediation by certain agents and institutions to end up with inclusion in the target culture. Reception lays its focus on the receiving culture, especially on critcism, reading, and interpretation. Translation, therefore, forms a major factor in reception with the general aim of reception studies being to reveal the wide spectrum of interpretations each text offers. Moreover, translations are the prime instrument in the distribution of literature across linguistic and cultural borders; thus, they pave the way for gaining prestige in the world of literature. The thirty-eight papers included in this volume and dedicated to research in this area were previously read at the ICLA conference 2016 in Vienna. They are ample proof that the field remains at the center of interest in Comparative Literature.
