La question de la créativité est centrale dans la problématique de l'oralité littéraire. Elle est ici examinée sous différents angles, à partir d'un grand nombre de cultures orales d'Afrique situées en différents points du continent. La première section, qui étudie la variabilité intra- et interculturelle des œuvres du patrimoine oral africain, recherche dans l'instabilité des énoncés, aussi bien les traces des énonciateurs que les différents systèmes culturels concernés. La seconde, " Modélisation et performance ", s'intéresse plus particulièrement aux contraintes canoniques à l'intérieur desquelles l'interprète peut exercer sa liberté de créateur sans apparaître comme un fauteur de transgression. La variation des contextes propres à chaque performance en fait un événement unique. C'est ce facteur déterminant de l'activité créatrice qui est pris en compte dans la troisième section, tandis que les conditions de " l'émergence d'œuvres nouvelles et de genres nouveaux " est à la fois le titre et l'objet de la quatrième section. La réflexion se clôt sur une cinquième section intitulée " Création, identité et développement " qui étudie comment la littérature orale africaine peut adapter les savoirs traditionnels à de nouvelles réalités politiques et sociales. Cet ouvrage, qui publie les actes du congrès de l'ISOLA (International Society for Oral Literature in Africa), tenu à Chambéry en 2002, se compose de la combinaison indissociable d'un livre et d'un cédérom, structurés selon les mêmes cinq parties. Les 43 contributions, réparties dans chacune de ces sections et rédigées dans l'une des deux langues du colloque, français (22) ou anglais (21), se retrouvent donc soit dans le livre, soit dans le cédérom, avec toujours un équivalent dans l'autre langue sous la forme d'un résumé et pour dix-huit d'entre elles d'une traduction intégrale.

Written and oral verbal art are often regarded as dichotomies, one excluding the other. While orature is confused with 'tradition', literature is ascribed to modernity. Furthermore, local languages are ignored and literature is equated with writing in foreign languages. The contributions in this volume take issue with such preconceptions and explore the multiple ways in which literary and oral forms interrelate and subvert each other, giving birth to new forms of artistic expression. They emphasize the local agency of the African poet and writer, which resists the global commodification of literature through the international bestseller lists of the cultural industry. The first section traces the movement from oral to written texts, which in many cases coincides with a switch from African to European languages. But as the essays in the section on "New Literary Languages" make clear, in other cases a true philological work is accomplished in the African language to create a new written and literary medium. Through the mixing of languages in the cities, such as the Sheng spoken in Kenya or the bilinguality of a writer such as Cheik Aliou Ndao (Senegal), new idioms for literary expressions evolve. The use of new media, technology or music stimulate the emergence of new genres, such as Taarab in East Africa, radio poetry in Yoruba and Hausa, or Rap in the Senegal, as is shown in the section on "Forms of New Orality." It is a great achievement of this second volume of Versions and Subversions in African Literatures that it assembles contributions by scholars from the anglophone and the francophone world and that it covers literary production in a broad spectrum of languages: English, French, Hausa, Sheng, Sotho, Spanish, Swahili, Wolof and Yoruba. Celle-ci aurait trouvé en cette source patrimoniale l’un des ferments de sa spécificité. Mais, en près d’un siècle, les littératures africaines écrites ont considérablement évolué dans leur esthétique comme dans leur thématique et les littératures orales aussi. La relation entre les deux champs ne saurait donc avoir été la même tout au long de ces années. L’identification de l’oralité dans la production écrite en des genres traditionnellement étrangers à ce type de culture – qu’il s’agisse de romans, de pièces de théâtre ou de poèmes – peut se manifester sous diverses modalités : évocation thématique, collage de genres oraux dans le corps du texte, structure rhétorique, etc. On peut en outre se demander dans quelle mesure la présence de ces différents traits d’oralité dans les oeuvres écrites est consubstantielle à la création littéraire africaine et si elle ne relèverait pas plutôt de postures idéologiques. L’étude de la relation entre littérature et oralité ne saurait, par ailleurs, se borner à l’examen des traces de culture orale dans l’écriture. On peut aussi partir des oeuvres orales patrimoniales pour voir dans quelle mesure elles relèvent de la littérarité ou si elles ne sont pas en train d’évoluer vers des formes qui les rapprochent de la littérature écrite. In Mali and beyond, they adapt ICT to their milieus and work as cultural agents, mediating between technology and society. They yearn to use ICT to make education more relevant to life, facilitate and enhance African participation in global debates and scholarly production, and evolve how Africa and Africans are projected and perceived. In sum, educators are harnessing ICT for its transformative possibilities. The changes apparent in student-teacher relations (more interactive) and classrooms (more dialogical) suggest that ICT can be a catalyst for pedagogical change, including in document-poor contexts and ones weighed down by legacies of colonialism. Learning from the perspectives and experiences of educators pioneering the use of ICT in education in Africa can inform educational theory, practice and policy and deepen understandings of the concept of appropriation as a process of cultural change.
