Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oral Exercises in English Composition That English composition in its earliest stages can be better taught by oral than by written exercises is an impression that for some time past has been gaining ground in educational circles. It is hoped, therefore, that an elementary text-book, prepared as this has been on an oral basis, will not be deemed superfluous. The examples for practice have been printed in a type larger than usual, so that the beginner may have no difficulty in reading them at sight. He will thus be able to give all his attention to doing whatever the heading to the exercise may require him to do, such as supplying omitted words, correcting errors of grammar or order, analysing sentences orally, recasting the form of sentences, substituting equivalent words, etc. It is of course open to the teacher at any time to have some of these examples worked out by the student at the desk and shown up to him in writing; and this may be advisable at times for the sake of variety, or for purposes of revision after an exercise has been done orally, or for practice in spelling and penmanship. Book Written and Oral Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Written and Oral Composition Classic Reprint written by Martin W. Sampson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Written and Oral Composition The authors add a volume to the many texts on English composition, in the hope of meeting fairly the first great need of the high school student who is beginning to learn to compose. That need is to think in terms of good com position, - to regard the spoken or written theme as a whole, and not as a collection of separate sentences. The high school student is not yet mature, but still less is he a child, and he learns to write well and to speak well mainly by learning to think. This book seeks constantly to appeal to his intelligence; first, by giving him subjects within his grasp, and second, by having faith that his grasp means brains as well as memory. An old mistake was to give the student tasks beyond his power; a new mistake is to hold him too closely to the commonplace. The present authors try a middle course, but they have never felt themselves obliged to reach that middle course by exactly bisecting the difference between the two ex tremes. Much more stress than usual is laid upon oral composition, for the plain reason that much defective writing is due to defective speaking. Book Informal Oral Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Informal Oral Composition Classic Reprint written by George Pickett Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Informal Oral Composition Without question, conversation bears a close re semblance to the informal consecutive talk under dis ensaiou here. However, they are not one and the same. In conversation the person speaking may be interrupted by others present, or he may stop to listen to what some one else is saying. The conversational talk is not unified; it is varied by what others may think and say. The oral composition is uninterrupted, unified. In other words, a listener gains from it an impression of a complete treatment of one topic by one person. It is more distinct as to its beginning, its development, and its conclusion than is the con versation. Yet it is a perfectly easy and natural mode of oral expression, lying between formal public speaking on the one hand and casual conversation on the other. Book Exercises in English Classic Reprint

Download or read book Exercises in English Classic Reprint written by Edwin C. Woolley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in English Each exercise, except numbers 225-232, can be done in writing andin a period of time not longer than is Ordinarily required for an English theme. And the di rections to the student are given as for written exercises, and in such specific terms that, if a teacher wishes an exercise to be done in writing, he need only cite a number; the task by no means easy of telling the student just what to do is transferred from the teacher to the book. Most of the exercises, however, can also be used for oral and blackboard work in class; those dealing with sentence-structure will, I hope, be found especially useful for this purpose. Book Good English Oral and Written Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Good English Oral and Written Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by William H. Elson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Good English Oral and Written, Vol. 1 This book is intended for use in the third and fourth years of the elementary school. The authors believe that children speak and write for the same reason that adults do - to tell something that is in their minds, something related to their own experiences, some thing that has a note of personal interest or preference or Opinion. Therefore, the material on which conversation and written exercises are based has been selected with refer ence to its living interest to children and its vital relation to their experiences. This material, moreover, has had thorough test in the classroom. It is now generally agreed that children learn to speak and write interestingly and effectively by speaking and writing under proper inspiration and guidance. Something to say and someone to say it to - an interesting subject and an interested audience - are prime requisites for growth of language power. In this, moreover, oral speech holds first claim on the atten tion of the school, because we speak more than we write. Throughout this text the authors have held clearly in mind these fundamental principles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Oral English

Download or read book Oral English written by John M. Brewer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oral English: Directions and Exercises for Planning and Delivering the Common Kinds of Talks, Together With Guidance for Debating and Parliamentary Practice Oral English is taking its place in schools and colleges as a subject Independent both of literature and of written composition. Moreover, the study itself is changing, passing from practice in imitation of lofty masterpieces, with the elocutionary style, to direct, effective speaking without unnecessary adornment. Many authors still make oral work subsidiary to written composition, whereas speaking should be primary. Others plan to drill stu dents chiefly in vocal exercises, giving most of the time to prepa ration for talking and little to the talking itself. Many emphasize reproduction and neglect production. Some ground their exercises on the theory of general discipline, and neglect considerations of immediate utility and vocational needs. Few give the students the point of view of the modern, active man or woman of the world, who must talk a great deal and wishes to do it with businesslike simplicity and brevity.
