Book excerpt: Oral assessments are of vital importance to second language learners, but how can teachers and examiners best test L2 learner talk and interaction? Bringing together theory and research within the field of L2 oral proficiency, with the concept of L2 encompassing any language learned later than the early childhood years, this book provides a state-of-the art overview of what is at stake for L2 learners and examiners, and advice on how to approach testing and assessment. Using data and findings from empirical research to illustrate and discuss key topics, Testing Talk takes the reader step-by-step through the major concepts and issues in the oral assessment of second languages, with a main focus on L2 English. Investigating and explaining the most important educational and interactional issues facing both examiners and test-takers, such as the factors which come into play during speaking tests, the differences between common test formats, and the challenge of ensuring equity in assessment, this book offers research-based advice on ways to design test tasks and in-depth insights into the assessment of L2 speaking. Featuring a glossary of key terms and concepts, discussion questions and further reading for each chapter, and a comprehensive companion website hosting a wealth of additional materials, including authentic test recordings and assessment tasks to be used by researchers and practitioners alike, this is the only book needed in order to understand, design, and assess interactive oral L2 tests.

Book Measuring Oral Proficiency Through Paired task Performance

Download or read book Measuring Oral Proficiency Through Paired task Performance written by Ildikó Csépes and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book intends to provide a theoretical overview of examining candidates' oral abilities in different examination formats. In particular, it explores specific partner effects on discourse outcomes and proficiency ratings in the framework of paired-task performance. Two investigations, both set in the context of a proposed Hungarian school leaving examination in English, were carried out in order to contribute to a better understanding of the assumed impact of the chosen variables. Study One investigates discourse differences between examiner-to-examinee interaction and peer-to-peer interaction. Study Two explores the impact of the peer partner's proficiency. The results show that partner effects related to this variable cannot be predicted as either harmful or beneficial since no statistically significant difference was found between 30 candidates' scores in different examination conditions.

Download or read book Great Performances written by Larry Lewin and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What grade did you give me? students often ask teachers, as if teachers randomly assign grades. Too many students do not understand how their academic performance in the classroom corresponds with various grades. Improving students' understanding of what their teachers expect them to do, how well they should be able to do it, and how they should go about accomplishing it is what this book is all about. Lewin and Shoemaker show you how to teach rich, integrated, thematic units of instruction where students grapple with meaty conceptual ideas and use the processes of reading, writing, problem solving, and investigation. The authors share what they've learned about developing and assessing powerful performance tasks ranging from short and specific to lengthy and substantive. Their focus is on the practical, the doable. You can learn from their successes as well as their mistakes. The authors discuss a four-step approach for teaching students how to acquire content knowledge labeled "Info In" and examine four "Info Out" modes through which students can make their content understanding explicit for evaluation purposes. Great Performances is filled with highly motivating examples of student projects as well as effective assessment tools that teachers can adapt for their own classrooms. In this new edition, you will find: -updated examples and scoring mechanisms throughout the chapters; -expanded options for converting performance task scores into required letter grades for reporting to parents; and -a new chapter on reading assessment to help teachers navigate their way through Response to Intervention. This chapter also provides as a helpful review of popular commercially published in-class reading assessments. Teaching to and assessing with performance tasks result in true understanding—the type of understanding students will need in the world, where they will be expected to produce "Great Performances."

Book Interaction in Paired Oral Proficiency Assessment in Spanish

Download or read book Interaction in Paired Oral Proficiency Assessment in Spanish written by Ana Maria Ducasse and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defining the construct of interaction for paired assessment purposes has been difficult, despite the evolution of our view of language to include the social perspective of co-construction, and the fact that such discourse is increasingly taught and assessed. In this volume three sequenced studies define interaction in paired oral assessment through the verbal protocols of learners of Spanish and their assessors. Assessors then scale performances from videoed test performance data resulting in the development of an evidence based rating process which includes non-verbal interpersonal communication, interactive listening and interactional management.

This book was released on 2020-09-19 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is formally represented around the world by approximately 14,000 Foreign Service officers and other personnel in the U.S. Department of State. Roughly one-third of them are required to be proficient in the local languages of the countries to which they are posted. To achieve this language proficiency for its staff, the State Department's Foreign Service Institute (FSI) provides intensive language instruction and assesses the proficiency of personnel before they are posted to a foreign country. The requirement for language proficiency is established in law and is incorporated in personnel decisions related to job placement, promotion, retention, and pay. A Principled Approach to Language Assessment: Considerations for the U.S. Foreign Service Institute evaluates the different approaches that exist to assess foreign language proficiency that FSI could potentially use. This report considers the key assessment approaches in the research literature that are appropriate for language testing, including, but not limited to, assessments that use task-based or performance-based approaches, adaptive online test administration, and portfolios.
