Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Jim Ahearns Introduction in Opus in Chromatic Words: If you like jazz, poetic expression, travel, and memoir, you need to look no further than Edward Van Slambroucks new book of poems cleverly titled Opus in Chromatic Words. How appropriate is his choice of title words: Opus (a creative work) and Chromatic (a word of color and music). These words are characteristic of his endeavors and his life as sung in his poetry. His poetry joins those elements with a quick sense of humor. Walk through the door of any one of his poems and you may end up tickling your funny bone and doing a little dance. Eds love for his family, his friendships during youth and adulthood, his school memories, his children and grandchildren, his beloved wife, Diane, and his trips to Alaska, Mexico and other world venues are all lit with poetic light in this book. He and his wife stay on Floridas west coast during winter, thus the sun of the southland appears in warm words in some poems. Beyond that, Eds ever-present saxophone permeates a life celebrated in word-images, framed with music and poetry. I suggest you take a trip through Opus. From Margo LaGattutas Introduction in Heart Music published in 2008: With his musicians ear, Van Slambrouck brings us echoes of those diaphanous feelings that exist even in the silences between the words. Poetry is the perfect form for his thoughts because it combines sound and image in a way that is as close to song as one can get, while still using language. OnSpring: A Family of Poems, Mr. Van Slambroucks first book was published in 2005. Peter Meinke, a noted national poet, commented the following: thanks for sending me your touching chapbook, Onspring, whose pages are heartfelt, moving, linguistically admirable and playful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Carolyn Walker's Forward to WATER EARTH FIRE AIR: "Ed Van Slambrouck's book of poetry, WATER EARTH FIRE AIR, is one man's wise, sentimental, and sometimes playful meditation on God's love and the experience of His creation. Earnest as a child's devotional, heartfelt as a father's prayer, and occasionally touched with a tongue-in-cheek pun, Van Slambrouck's poetry collection, his fourth in an ambitious series fueled by a prolific writing schedule, explores God's bounty as he lived it in eight decades of life. Using the language of imagery and style (informed by Van Slambrouck's gift for music) the collection takes the reader by the spirit and coaxes him through such diverse experiences as what it means to adore a woman, raise children, conquer illness, appreciate a friend, play the saxophone, feel the wind and worship at the foot of the Cross." Acclimations about E. V. Van Slambrouck's other books: Opus in Chromatic Words (2010): "Ed's ever-present saxophone permeates a life celebrated in word-images, framed with music and poetry." James F. Ahearn, Poet and President of the Poetry Society of Michigan. Margo LaGattuta, Poet and Teacher. Book Interpreting Chekhov s Prose

Download or read book Interpreting Chekhov s Prose written by Leonard A. Polakiewicz and published by Academic Studies PRess. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays collected in this book constitute a new contribution to our understanding of the originality and significance of Chekhov’s prose. A close textual analysis of his work is provided, and especially of previously neglected works—some long overdue for in-depth investigation—that Chekhov himself rightfully considered to be masterpieces. Analysis of both these and other previously analyzed works offers a new interpretation which contrasts with those offered by previous Chekhov scholars. Works examined include those dealing with Chekhov’s astonishingly accurate and artistic portrayal of a wide variety of illnesses—without the use of any medical terms. These works are shown to be not mere “clinical studies,” but genuine, impressive works of art. The author, who suffered half of his life from tuberculosis, effectively portrayed many characters afflicted with this disease which was incurable at the time. Many of these works reveal an indisputable symbiosis of the doctor and the artist. Chekhov maintained that “in Goethe the poet lived amicably side by side with the scientist”—a fitting description of him as well. Doctors, the most frequently portrayed characters in Chekhov’s oeuvre are appropriately subjected to extensive analysis, as are the themes of fate and death and dying that figure so prominently in Chekhov’s work. Attention is accorded to imaginative fictional works dealing with philosophy and the theme of crime and punishment, as well as The Island of Sakhalin, a narrative of non-fictional sociological content.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Blue, a beautifully illustrated history of yellow from antiquity to the present In this richly illustrated book, Michel Pastoureau—a renowned authority on the history of color and the author of celebrated volumes on blue, black, green, and red—now traces the visual, social, and cultural history of yellow. Focusing on European societies, with comparisons from East Asia, India, Africa, and South America, Yellow tells the intriguing story of the color’s evolving place in art, religion, fashion, literature, and science. In Europe today, yellow is a discreet color, little present in everyday life and rarely carrying great symbolism. This has not always been the case. In antiquity, yellow was almost sacred, a symbol of light, warmth, and prosperity. It became highly ambivalent in medieval Europe: greenish yellow came to signify demonic sulfur and bile, the color of forgers, lawless knights, Judas, and Lucifer—while warm yellow recalled honey and gold, serving as a sign of pleasure and abundance. In Asia, yellow has generally had a positive meaning. In ancient China, yellow clothing was reserved for the emperor, while in India the color is associated with happiness. Above all, yellow is the color of Buddhism, whose temple doors are marked with it. Throughout, Pastoureau illuminates the history of yellow with a wealth of captivating images. With its striking design and compelling text, Yellow is a feast for the eye and mind.

Download or read book Making Words Sing written by Jonathan Dunsby and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-06-10 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes a classical song a song? In a wide-ranging 2004 discussion, covering such contrasting composers as Brahms and Berberian, Schubert and Kurtág, Jonathan Dunsby considers the nature of vocality in songs of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The essence and scope of poetic and literary meaning in the Lied tradition is subjected to close scrutiny against the backdrop of 'new musicological' thinking and music-theoretical orthodoxies. The reader is thus offered the best insights available within an evidence-based approach to musical discourse. Schoenberg figures conspicuously as both songsmith and theorist, and some easily comprehensible Schenkerian approaches are used to convey ideas of musical time and expressive focus. In this work of scholarship and theoretical depth, Professor Dunsby's highly original approach and engaging style will ensure its appeal to all practising musicians and students of Romantic and modern music.

Book Engineering of Music for the Digital Age

Download or read book Engineering of Music for the Digital Age written by Jeffrey Ewing and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-10-23 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musical scores – like literature, poetry, and technical manuals – are documents. The central tenet of this book is that musical composition in the digital age is a form of document engineering. In essence, music shares with other forms of creative content generation – from poetry to prose, and from science to science fiction – the need for structure, flow, and sources for creativity. Musical composition is considered in this book as the creative process of engineering musical documents with regards to its arrangement, form, texture, and instrumentation, etc. This "document" then instructs a performance or the creation of an alternative document, such as a recording. In this book, the arrangement of phrases, patterns, and structures seen in music will be illustrated to give new composers a starting point to begin planning and making decisions about their own compositions. The book will also guide those who need assistance in completing a piece. While this is a book about musical composition, it is not meant to be a manual on music theory. Instead, the book keeps its focus on the structural elements of a composition. Its aim is to give the audience a structural road map for composing; whether they are starting a piece from the first note, having a melody in mind already, or need help overcoming a creative hurdle. The book examines compositions that clearly define a form or technique. Among the key compositional elements are: Form, Phrase, Period, and Expression in Composition Rhythm/Motive Melody and Harmony Tonal Center Mode Mixture and Modulation Accompaniment/Instrumentation/Orchestration Composition Techniques and Notation Targeted examples cover all stages of writing a piece, helping to build the reader’s composition from the first note into a complete work without promoting a style or harmonic practice. Each chapter contains a sidebar addressing helping the composer to add creative sources for the music making process. Finally, the book concludes with a chapter on creativity in terms of how composed music can affect our lives and even our fairy tales.
