Book Optimum Design of Unbraced Multi story Frames by Plastic Theory

Download or read book Optimum Design of Unbraced Multi story Frames by Plastic Theory written by Thomas M. MURRAY and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer program is described which performs weight optimization of three-bay multi-story frames using plastic theory. The input consists of the frame geometry and the load intensity. The maximum number of stories depends only on the computer storage capacity. Three loading cases with corresponding load factors are considered: vertical loads only, vertical loads combined with lateral loads from the left, and vertical loads combined with lateral loads from the right. Loads are modified to include pertinent load reduction criteria. Where combined loads govern the size of members, the ratio of the capacities of individual members is determined by an iterative procedure using frame weight as the minimized function. Provision is made for consideration of second-order effects. The output of the program consists of the member forces needed for design of connections, and of member sizes. Refinement of the member sizes to account for frame instability and constructional details should be performed to complete the design. Weight comparisons for a frame designed for allowable stresses and plastic theory without optimization are presented. (Author).

Book Optimization in Structural Design

Download or read book Optimization in Structural Design written by A. Sawczuk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural optimization, a broad interdisciplinary field, requires skillful combining of mathematical and mechanical knowledge with engineering. It is both intellectually attractive and technologically rewarding. The Symposium on Optimization in Structural Design was the second IUTAM Symposium in Poland. Fifteen years have elapsed since the Symposium on Nonhomogeneity in Elasticity and Plasticity, presided by Professor Olszak, was held in Warsaw. These fifteen years mean a lot for mechanics in Poland. Continuing the tradition of Professor Maksymilian Tytus Huber's research, considerable development of the mechanical sciences has been achieved in this country mostly due to the knowledge, vision and persistence of Professors Wit old Nowacki and Waclaw Olszak, eminent Members of our Academy. The Institute of Fundamental Technological Research was established, competent research groups grew, matured and contri buted to thermo-elasticity, plasticity, general theory of constitutive equations, and to structural mechanics-just to mention a few do mains. Mechanics is now penetrating into the technology of this country at an accelerating pace. The optimization in mechanics has a tradition in Poland. In 1936 Professor Zbigniew Wasiutynski formulated the optimality criterion for mean stiffness design using an elastic energy concept. Further work in this field has been done since, mostly in the last ten years. On behalf of the Committee for Mechanics of the Polish Academy of Sciences I wish to thank the IUTA1V[ Bureau for the decision to hold in Warsaw the Symposium the present volume contains the contribu tions to.

Book Plastic Design of Frames 1 Fundamentals

Download or read book Plastic Design of Frames 1 Fundamentals written by J. Baker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1969-06-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this volume was first published, plastic theory was the most modern method of structural analysis, and it made possible the direct design of steel frames in a way not available with only elastic methods. It is now recognized that this theory is also fundamental to structural design in materials such as reinforced concrete and aluminium. This is the first volume of a two-volume work by Professors Baker and Heyman that expounds and illustrates the methods of plastic design. Volume 1 gives the elements of the theory and covers the needs of most undergraduates and designers. A special feature of this work is the large number of exercises (140 in all) with answers. Volume 2 deals with advanced topics of theoretical analysis and practical design. The examples and the methods presented herein are extremely valuable to the engineer. The quality of the writing makes Professors Baker and Heyman's book a pleasure to read. Lord Baker (Sir John Fleetwood Baker, 1901-1985) was Professor of Mechanical Sciences and Head of the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge from 1943 to 1968. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society. Baker's pioneering research led to the development of the plastic theory of design, originally used for steel frames but now recognized as being valid for many structural materials, such as aluminium and reinforced concrete. Additionally, Baker was responsible for many curriculum innovations at the university and was the author of The Steel Skeleton, a two-volume work. Jacques Heyman is the former Head of the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge and the author of ten books, including The Stone Skeleton, Elements of the Theory of Structures, Structural Analysis: A Historical Approach, Elements of Stress Analysis, and the two-volume set Plastic Design of Frames: Volume 1. Fundamentals with Lord Baker and Volume 2. Applications. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, the Institution of Civil Engineers, and the Royal Academy of Engineering. He acted as a consulting engineer for a number of English cathedrals and as a member of the Architectural Advisory Panel for Westminster Abbey and of the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England, and he has served on many British standards committees. The Stone Skeleton won the Choice Outstanding Academic Books Award in 1996.

Book Plastic Design of Multi story Frames Braced Frames

Download or read book Plastic Design of Multi story Frames Braced Frames written by Le-Wu Lu and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a procedure for the plastic design of braced multi-story frames. It is intended to be used as an office guide in design. For this reason, detailed explanations, derivations, and experimental verifications of design equations and concepts are not included. They can be found in the references listed at the end of the paper. Only rigid frames, diagonlly braced in the major plane are covered. Floor systems are assumed to be simply supported and perpendicular to the frame. Design procedures are included for high-strength steel members and composite steel and concrete beams. Design examples are given to aid the designer in understanding the procedure. Calculations are done in a tabular form to suggest a possible means of organization for manual computations. (Author).

Book Optimization and Artificial Intelligence in Civil and Structural Engineering

Download or read book Optimization and Artificial Intelligence in Civil and Structural Engineering written by B.H. Topping and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume and its companion volume includes the edited versions of the principal lectures and selected papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Optimization and Decision Support Systems in Civil Engineering. The Institute was held in the Department of Civil Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh from June 25th to July 6th 1989 and was attended by eighty participants from Universities and Research Institutes around the world. A number of practising civil and structural engineers also attended. The lectures and papers have been divided into two volumes to reflect the dual themes of the Institute namely Optimization and Decision Support Systems in Civil Engineering. Planning for this ASI commenced in late 1986 when Andrew Templeman and I discussed developments in the use of the systems approach in civil engineering. A little later it became clear that much of this approach could be realised through the use of knowledge-based systems and artificial intelligence techniques. Both Don Grierson and John Gero indicated at an early stage how important it would be to include knowledge-based systems within the scope of the Institute. The title of the Institute could have been: 'Civil Engineering Systems' as this would have reflected the range of systems applications to civil engineering problems considered by the Institute. These volumes therefore reflect the full range of these problems including: structural analysis and design; water resources engineering; geotechnical engineering; transportation and environmental engineering.
