Book Optimizing Government for an Optimizing Economy

Download or read book Optimizing Government for an Optimizing Economy written by Cary Coglianese and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much entrepreneurial growth in the United States today emanates from technological advances that optimize through contextualization. Innovations as varied as Airbnb and Uber, fintech firms and precision medicine, are transforming major sectors in the economy by customizing goods and services as well as refining matches between available resources and interested buyers. The technological advances that make up the optimizing economy create new challenges for government oversight of the economy. Traditionally, government has overseen economic activity through general regulations that aim to treat all individuals equally; however, in the optimizing economy, business is moving in the direction of greater individualization, not generalization. An ever-more optimizing economy therefore demands an increasingly smart, optimizing government. To ensure that government can properly balance policy goals in the new economy, steps need to be taken now to enhance the technological and analytical sophistication of the government workforce, improve the government's information technology infrastructure, build stronger and more complete collections of data, and draw on policy lessons from other periods of technological innovations. In the optimizing economy, the government will continue to play a crucial role in protecting the public from market failures, but, to fulfill that role, government will need to follow the private sector's lead and build up its own capacity for optimization.

Book Cost and Optimization in Government

Download or read book Cost and Optimization in Government written by Aman Khan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The careful management of costs and operations are two of the most essential elements of operating any successful organization, public or private. While the private sector is driven by profit-maximizing incentives to keep costs to a minimum, the public sector’s mission and goals are guided by a different set of objectives: to provide a wide range of essential goods and services to maintain social order, improve public health, revitalize the economy, and, most importantly, to improve the quality of life for its citizens. Although the objectives are different, it is just as important for public decision makers to make the best use of available resources by keeping the cost of operation to a minimum. This book demonstrates that with a careful emphasis on cost accounting, operations management, and quality control, all organizations and governments can increase efficiency, improve performance, and prepare to weather hard times. This book is divided into three parts: Part I offers thorough coverage of cost fundamentals, with an emphasis on basic cost concepts, cost behavior, cost analysis, cost accounting, and cost control. Part II examines optimization in costs and operations in government including traditional or classical optimization with applications in inventory management and queuing, followed by mathematical programming and network analysis. Finally, Part III explores special topics in cost and optimization, in particular those related to games and decisions, productivity measurement, and quality control. Simple, accessible language and explanations are integrated throughout, and examples have been drawn from government so that readers can easily relate to them. Cost and Optimization in Government is required reading for practicing public managers and students of public administration in need of a clear, concise guide to maximizing public resource efficiency.

Book Optimizing the Nation s Investment in Academic Research

Download or read book Optimizing the Nation s Investment in Academic Research written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-06-29 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research universities are critical contributors to our national research enterprise. They are the principal source of a world-class labor force and fundamental discoveries that enhance our lives and the lives of others around the world. These institutions help to create an educated citizenry capable of making informed and crucial choices as participants in a democratic society. However many are concerned that the unintended cumulative effect of federal regulations undercuts the productivity of the research enterprise and diminishes the return on the federal investment in research. Optimizing the Nation's Investment in Academic Research reviews the regulatory framework as it currently exists, considers specific regulations that have placed undue and often unanticipated burdens on the research enterprise, and reassesses the process by which these regulations are created, reviewed, and retired. This review is critical to strengthen the partnership between the federal government and research institutions, to maximize the creation of new knowledge and products, to provide for the effective training and education of the next generation of scholars and workers, and to optimize the return on the federal investment in research for the benefit of the American people.

Book Improving Local Government Performance Through Tax Optimization

Download or read book Improving Local Government Performance Through Tax Optimization written by Riyanto Wujarso and published by Asadel Publisher. This book was released on 2023-07-09 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Improving Local Government Performance Through Tax Optimization" explores the vital role of taxes in the functioning of a country, with a particular focus on the significance of regional taxes in state and local governance. These regional taxes serve various purposes such as regulation, budget allocation, and resource redistribution. The effectiveness of local tax systems depends on their ability to generate sufficient revenue, ultimately enhancing the overall functioning of local governments. Through a descriptive qualitative approach, this book delves into strategies aimed at optimizing local tax collection methods to improve the performance of local governments. The study emphasizes the critical requirement of a funding source, known as PAD (Own-Source Revenue), primarily sourced from local revenue, for successful autonomy and decentralization implementation. However, the current state of affairs reveals a significant insufficiency in local taxes and levies, which account for only 16% of the total PAD. To address this issue, the book highlights the pressing need to maximize the intensification of local tax collection methods and regional levies to bolster regional income and enhance regional performance. By exploring various strategies, local governments can tap into a more substantial revenue stream, enabling them to enhance their operational capabilities and improve the overall governance structure at the regional level. The optimization of local tax collection methods and the intensification of regional levies not only have a direct impact on regional income but also contribute to the overall improvement of regional performance. By streamlining and optimizing these revenue streams, regional governments can invest in development initiatives, improve public infrastructure, and provide better public services to local communities. Furthermore, a robust financial foundation empowers governments to address socioeconomic disparities, foster economic growth, and promote overall well-being within their regions. This book underscores the significance of refining local tax collection procedures and strengthening regional levies to overcome the financial inadequacy hindering the progress of regional governments. By doing so, governments can effectively implement autonomy and decentralization, meet the demands of development initiatives, and fulfill the specific needs of their regions. Ultimately, this book aims to provide insights and recommendations to policymakers and practitioners on how to optimize tax systems at the local level for the betterment of regional performance and governance.

Book Optimizing the German Workforce

Download or read book Optimizing the German Workforce written by David Meskill and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twentieth century, German government and industry created a highly skilled workforce as part of an ambitious program to control and develop the country’s human resources. Yet, these long-standing efforts to match as many workers as possible to skilled vocations and to establish a system of job training have received little scholarly attention, until now. The author’s account of the broad support for this program challenges the standard historical accounts that focus on disagreements over the German political-economic order and points instead to an important area of consensus. These advances are explained in terms of political policies of corporatist compromise and national security as well as industry’s evolving production strategies. By tracing the development of these policies over the course of a century, the author also suggests important continuities in Germany’s domestic politics, even across such different regimes as Imperial, Weimar, Nazi, and post-1945 West Germany.
