Book Optimizing Communication in HPF Programs for Fine grain Distributed Shared Memory

Download or read book Optimizing Communication in HPF Programs for Fine grain Distributed Shared Memory written by Satish Chandra and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "The coherence mechanisms underlying most shared-memory systems work equally well -- or poorly -- for regular and irregular programs. In both cases, data accesses go through a general-purpose protocol, which provides the only communication primitive available to software. However, in parts of many codes, compile-time information about data accesses could be used to transfer data more efficiently than a standard coherence protocol, if the underlying system provided suitable primitives. This paper demonstrates that for HPF programs running on fine- grain distributed shared memory [32], cooperation between the compiler and the coherence protocol can produce significant performance gains (upto [sic] 26%), while retaining the versatility and portability of coherent shared memory. This paper also describes the design choices in our implementation and reports detailed experimental results."

Book Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing

Download or read book Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing written by Siddharta Chatterjee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-26 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LCPC’98 Steering and Program Committes for their time and energy in - viewing the submitted papers. Finally, and most importantly, we thank all the authors and participants of the workshop. It is their signi cant research work and their enthusiastic discussions throughout the workshopthat made LCPC’98 a success. May 1999 Siddhartha Chatterjee Program Chair Preface The year 1998 marked the eleventh anniversary of the annual Workshop on Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing (LCPC), an international - rum for leading research groups to present their current research activities and latest results. The LCPC community is interested in a broad range of te- nologies, with a common goal of developing software systems that enable real applications. Amongthetopicsofinteresttotheworkshoparelanguagefeatures, communication code generation and optimization, communication libraries, d- tributed shared memory libraries, distributed object systems, resource m- agement systems, integration of compiler and runtime systems, irregular and dynamic applications, performance evaluation, and debuggers. LCPC’98 was hosted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) on 7 - 9 August 1998, at the William and Ida Friday Center on the UNC-CH campus. Fifty people from the United States, Europe, and Asia attended the workshop. The program committee of LCPC’98, with the help of external reviewers, evaluated the submitted papers. Twenty-four papers were selected for formal presentation at the workshop. Each session was followed by an open panel d- cussion centered on the main topic of the particular session.

Book Communication Optimizations for Fine Grained UPCApplications

Download or read book Communication Optimizations for Fine Grained UPCApplications written by Katherine Yelick and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global address space languages like UPC exhibit high performance and portability on a broad class of shared and distributed memory parallel architectures. The most scalable applications use bulk memory copies rather than individual reads and writes to the shared space, but finer-grained sharing can be useful for scenarios such as dynamic load balancing, event signaling, and distributed hash tables. In this paper we present three optimization techniques for global address space programs with fine-grained communication: redundancy elimination, use of split-phase communication, and communication coalescing. Parallel UPC programs are analyzed using static single assignment form and a data flow graph, which are extended to handle the various shared and private pointer types that are available in UPC. The optimizations also take advantage of UPC's relaxed memory consistency model, which reduces the need for cross thread analysis. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the analysis and optimizations using several benchmarks, which were chosen to reflect the kinds of fine-grained, communication-intensive phases that exist in some larger applications. The optimizations show speedups of up to 70 percent on three parallel systems, which represent three different types of cluster network technologies.
