Book Optimization of Tip Store Modeling

Download or read book Optimization of Tip Store Modeling written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the high cost of performing detailed three-dimensional flutter analyses for aircraft which are carrying large numbers and types of external stores, it is often not economically feasible to include sophisticated store aerodynamics especially when they will not cause significant changes to the flutter results. Thus, the stores are presently often modeled as simple flat plates. This tends to decrease the accuracy of the computed pressure distributions as the spanwise flow field and the wing-body interaction are not represented correctly. In this report, therefore, two methods, a doublet lattice method for subsonic flow and a kernel function method for subsonic and supersonic flow are used for the computation of unsteady pressure distributions and forces on an F-5 wing with a tip mounted launcher/store combination for various store models consisting of simple flat plates, endplated, and axisymmetric bodies. The resulting aerodynamic data are compared to existing experimental and numerical results for the same wing/store combination. The store modeling was optimized for simplicity and accuracy with respect to the aerodynamic forces and pressures. The wing-body interaction was improved without a considerable increase in complexity, i.e. panel number, and thus computational effort. Keywords: Wing body configurations; Aerodynamic stability. Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, SIld disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna and broader dissemination. tional publishing house to assure improved service Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 30 (thesis year 1985) a total of 12,400 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 186 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work.

Book Multidisciplinary Optimization of an Aircraft Wing Tip Store in the Transonic Regime

Download or read book Multidisciplinary Optimization of an Aircraft Wing Tip Store in the Transonic Regime written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this research, a multidisciplinary optimization procedure is described to delay the occurrence of store-induced flutter of an aircraft wing/tip store configuration. A preliminary design procedure was developed to enhance the performance characteristics of an aircraft wing model in the transonic Mach number regime. A wing/tip store configuration with the store center of gravity (c.g.) located at the 50% aerodynamic tip chord was chosen for structural optimization. The aircraft wing structural weight was chosen as the objective function with constraints on natural frequency, stress and flutter. Automated Structural Optimization System (ASTROS) and Computational Aeroelasticity Program-Transonic Small- Disturbance (CAP-TSD) were the computational tools employed to perform the structural optimization and subsequent aeroelastic (mutual interaction between the aerodynamics and structural deformation) analysis in the transonic regime. This work showed that an improved store-induced flutter speed was obtained by increasing the separation between the first two natural frequencies of the wing structure. These results were compared with the results of those cases in which the flutter constraints were incorporated, along with the stress and frequency constraints, in the optimization problem. The addition of the flutter constraint resulted in a negligible increase in flutter speed when compared with the flutter speed obtained from optimization with only frequency and stress constraints.

Book Wing Theory in Supersonic Flow

Download or read book Wing Theory in Supersonic Flow written by Elie Carafoli and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Division II: Aerodynamics, Volume 7: Wing Theory in Supersonic Flow examines the cases of isolated simple wings, wings with vertical plane tail, cruciform wings, and simple or cruciform wings fitted with a body. This book presents the method for the actual calculation of isolated wings or of more complex system. Organized into 12 chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the basic equations in the mechanics of inviscid fluids. This text then presents a unified theory that is established for angularly shaped wings in supersonic flow. Other chapters consider the method for calculating the characteristics of drag, lift, and moments for various shapes of the trailing edge line. This book discusses as well the wings of ordinary shapes, delta wings, yawed wings, polygonal wings, trapezoid wings, and arrow-head or swept-back wings. The final chapter deals with a delta wing with a central fusiform body. This book is a valuable resource for teachers, students, and specialists engaged in modern aerodynamics.
