Book Dose Optimization in Digital Radiography and Computed Tomography

Download or read book Dose Optimization in Digital Radiography and Computed Tomography written by Euclid Seeram and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-21 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses radiation protection of patients having digital radiography and computed tomography (CT) examinations. The literature on radiation doses to patients from these two modalities have reported that the doses to patients are high. As a result, the radiology community has focused on methods and procedures to keep these doses as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) without compromising the diagnostic image quality. This book outlines the motivation for dose optimization in radiology, identifies and describes the ICRP principle of optimization, outlines the factors affecting the dose in digital radiography and in CT, and identifies and describes strategies used in digital radiography and in CT for dose optimization. This book is intended for all those working in digital radiography and CT environments including radiological technologists, and radiographers, radiologists, biomedical engineering technologists, and student medical physicists. It is best used as a supplement to radiologic science textbooks, and in particular, radiation protection textbooks. Furthermore, this book lays the foundations for students and practitioners engaged in research on dose reduction and dose optimization in radiology. · Provides practical and useful methods for optimization of doses from digital radiography and CT · Describes the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) principle of optimization · Outlines the factors affecting the dose in digital radiography and in computed tomography

Book Applying Radiation Safety Standards in Diagnostic Radiology and Interventional Procedures Using X Rays

Download or read book Applying Radiation Safety Standards in Diagnostic Radiology and Interventional Procedures Using X Rays written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA. This book was released on 2006 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Basic Safety Standards for Protection against Ionizing Radiation and for the Safety of Radiation Sources (BSS), jointly sponsored, inter alia, by the IAEA, ILO, WHO and PAHO, establish requirements on the legal persons responsible for designing, running and decommissioning practices involving ionizing radiation. These requirements are basic and general in nature. This report is intended to be of assistance to both regulators and users of radiation sources in diagnostic radiology and interventional procedures using X rays in applying the BSS to this practice. Regulators will find it useful for reviewing applications for authorization and for the inspection of the practice. Users of radiation in radiology may follow the guidance provided in order to comply with BSS requirements or equivalent national requirements. Experts recruited on IAEA missions to advise on the implementation of the BSS for the practice of diagnostic radiology and interventional procedures using X rays are expected to use this regulatory guidance report rather than their own national regulations and guidance. --Publisher's description.

Book Optimization of the Radiological Protection of Patients

Download or read book Optimization of the Radiological Protection of Patients written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In view of the vast potential of mammography as an imaging modality to achieve early detection of breast cancer, and the recommendations of various national and international organizations to achieve optimization in mammography, the IAEA initiated a Coordinated Research Project in 1999. The project was confined to six countries in Eastern Europe. The purpose was to access the situation with regard to image quality and patient dose, identify corrective actions needed to achieve optimization, implement corrective actions and evaluate the impact. Useful observations were made, and ultimately it was possible to achieve, on average, a 25% reduction in dose while maintaining image quality. It is hoped that this publication will prove useful to Member States in setting up programs for optimization of radiological protection in mammography.
