Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is a non-intrusive optical measurement technique which allows capturing several thousand velocity vectors within large flow fields instantaneously. Today, the PIV technique has spread widely and differentiated into many distinct applications, from micro flows over combustion to supersonic flows for both industrial needs and research. Over the past decade the measurement technique and the hard- and software have been improved continuously so that PIV has become a reliable and accurate method for "real life" investigations. Nevertheless there is still an ongoing process of improvements and extensions of the PIV technique towards 3D, time resolution, higher accuracy, measurements under harsh conditions and micro- and macroscales. This book gives a synopsis of the main results achieved during the EC-funded network PivNet 2 as well as a survey of the state of the art of scientific research using PIV techniques in different fields of application.

Book Particle Image Velocimetry

Download or read book Particle Image Velocimetry written by Markus Raffel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results from several applications of particle image velocimetry (PIV) to unsteady flows at a laboratory scale have been published, and commercial products are now available for more general laboratory use, but for certain industrially important applications, reliable equipment is often available only from in-house research and development teams. This PIV handbookis intended to transfer know-how from PIV development laboratories to end-users in industry and universities. The book discusses the scientific and technical aspects required to set up a PIV system, allows users to assess the problems involved in the application of PIV, and enables them to design, optimize, and use PIV systems to meet their special needs.

Book The Particle Image Velocimetry

Download or read book The Particle Image Velocimetry written by Giovanna Cavazzini and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Particle Image Velocimetry is undoubtedly one of the most important technique in Fluid-dynamics since it allows to obtain a direct and instantaneous visualization of the flow field in a non-intrusive way. This innovative technique spreads in a wide number of research fields, from aerodynamics to medicine, from biology to turbulence researches, from aerodynamics to combustion processes. The book is aimed at presenting the PIV technique and its wide range of possible applications so as to provide a reference for researchers who intended to exploit this innovative technique in their research fields. Several aspects and possible problems in the analysis of large- and micro-scale turbulent phenomena, two-phase flows and polymer melts, combustion processes and turbo-machinery flow fields, internal waves and river/ocean flows were considered.

Book Particle Image Velocimetry

Download or read book Particle Image Velocimetry written by Michel Stanislas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aeronautics industry is presently aiming for faster design cycles and shorter time to market of new aircraft. It is looking at the same time for improved aerodynamic performance, for evident competitive reasons. Advanced, computer based design systems, including fast and reliable numerical flow solvers, have been developed in the last decade including new turbulence models. On the experimental side, measurement techniques in general have also been improved significantly, however the data evaluation process remains still very time consuming, and unsteady effects and turbulence are often not being captured with sufficient accuracy and detail. The development of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) has helped to improve the analysis of the flow fields. After investigations in laboratory scale wind tunnels, a joint initiative on PIV research, by the European Aerospace Research Establishments, within GARTEUR have enabled a wide breakthrough of this new technology in Europe. Within the Research Framework Program of the European Union, the joint research project EUROPIV aimed to apply PIV technology to problems of industrial interest.

Download or read book Particle Image Velocimetry written by Ronald J. Adrian and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle image velocimetry, or PIV, refers to a class of methods used in experimental fluid mechanics to determine instantaneous fields of the vector velocity by measuring the displacements of numerous fine particles that accurately follow the motion of the fluid. Although the concept of measuring particle displacements is simple in essence, the factors that need to be addressed to design and implement PIV systems that achieve reliable, accurate, and fast measurements and to interpret the results are surprisingly numerous. The aim of this book is to analyze and explain them comprehensively.

Book Large scale Particle Image Velocimetry for Resolving Unsteady Flow Features at Cylinders

Download or read book Large scale Particle Image Velocimetry for Resolving Unsteady Flow Features at Cylinders written by Keshav Basnet and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often necessary to determine the flow field and velocity vectors associated with flow around hydraulic structures, such as bridge piers and abutments. Large-scale particle image velocimetry (LSPIV) holds promise for use as a means to obtain this information. However, there are no prior studies focused on the use of LSPIV to delineate unsteady flow fields dominated by large-scale turbulence structures as occur in the wake region immediately downstream of a structure. The present study comprised laboratory flume experiments to assess how LSPIV can be applied for resolving unsteady flow features in the wake region behind a vertical cylinder and a square prism in an open-channel flow. Several circular cylinders were tested, including half cylinders and square-section prisms, which simulated a pier. Also investigated was a half cylinder that approximated a caisson structure located at the channel side. The use of optimized parameters, obtained by slight adjustment on estimated parameters, enabled the LSPIV method to produce expected velocity vector fields, including the vortex-shedding in the wake of a cylinder. The LSPIV-derived wake vortices and their frequency of shedding agreed with the estimated values obtained from the Strouhal number. It is concluded that, with optimal adjustment of parameters used for LSPIV technique, the technique can be used to successfully estimate the actual shedding frequencies. An important aspect of LSPIV considered in the experiments is the size of seed-particle needed for LSPIV use. The experiments led to a recommendation in this regard. They also demonstrate the usefulness of small soap bubbles as seed particles for the range of cylinder diameters the study considered.

Book Combustion Measurements

Book Particle Tracking Velocimetry

Download or read book Particle Tracking Velocimetry written by Dana Dabiri and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle velocimetry is a non-intrusive optical measurement method whereby global velocity fields can be obtained in either two- or three-dimensions through time by inferring fluid motion through the displacement of particle tracers which seed the flow. While particle image velocimetry (PIV), which obtains each velocity vector by tracking groups of particles within an interrogation window through a cross-correlation algorithm, has thrived generously since its development, particle tracking velocimetry (PTV), which obtains each of the velocity vector by tracking individual particle, has received less attention. The goal of this book is to therefore provide a review of PTV, with a focus on methods and techniques that have been implemented towards its development and improvement, rather than on its applications.
