Book Optimization of Multimedia Flows Over Data Networks

Download or read book Optimization of Multimedia Flows Over Data Networks written by Jean-François Macq and published by Presses univ. de Louvain. This book was released on 2005 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first part of the thesis, we address the optimization of multimedia applications such as videoconferences or multi-player games in which user-dependent information has to be sent from the users to a core node to be chosen, and then global information has to be multicast back from the core node to all users. For a given communication network, this optimization seeks a core node under two potentially competing criteria, one being the sum of the distances the users, the other being the cost of connecting this core node and the users with a multicast (or Steiner) tree. We first consider the problem of minimizing a weighted sum of the two criteria and propose a heuristic which rapidly computes a solution guaranteed to be within a few percent of the optimum. Then we characterize the worst-case trade-offs between the two criteria and show that there always exists a core location for which each criterion is close to its minimum value. The second part concerns the protection of multimedia streaming applications against packet losses. By adding redundancy within blocks of consecutive data packets, losses can be recovered by the receiver unless long bursts of packets are lost inside the network. It has thus been observed that splitting packet streams onto several paths typically decreases the probability of an irrecoverable loss. Whereas current approaches rely on an exact computation of the probability and are consequently restricted to very small network instances, we propose to approximate this probability by measuring the impact of the chosen routing on the peakedness of the received packet stream. The peakedness of a stream may be seen as a measure of how packets are spread over time within the stream. Numerical experiments are presented and show that our method yields good approximations of the probability of irrecoverable loss.

Book Intelligent Multimedia Communication Techniques and Applications

Download or read book Intelligent Multimedia Communication Techniques and Applications written by Chang Wen Chen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-06 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multimedia data are used more and more widely in human being's life, e.g., videoconferencing, visual telephone, IPTV, etc. Nearly most of the applications need multimedia transmission techniques that send multimedia data from one side to another side and keep the properties of efficiency, robustness and security. Here, the efficiency denotes the time cost of transmission operations, the robustness denotes the ability to survive transmission errors or noises, and the security denotes the protection of the transmitted media content. Recently, various intelligent or innovative techniques are invented, which bring vast performance improvements to practical applications. For example, such content transmission techniques as p2p, sensor network and ad hoc network are constructed, which adaptively use the peers’ properties to improve the network’s resources. Multimedia adaptation techniques can adjust the multimedia data rate in order to compliant with the network’s bandwidth. Scalable encryption techniques can generate the data stream that can be correctly decrypted after bit rate conversion. Ubiquitous multimedia services make the user share any kind of content anywhere. The book includes fourteen chapters highlighting current concepts, issues and emerging technologies. Distinguished scholars from many prominent research institutions around the world contribute to the book. The book covers various aspects, including not only some fundamental knowledge and the latest key techniques, but also typical applications and open issues. For example, the covered topics include the present and future video coding standards, stereo and multiview coding techniques, free-viewpoint TV techniques, wireless broadcasting techniques, media streaming techniques, wireless media transmission techniques and systems, and User-Generated Content sharing.

Book Source Code Optimization Techniques for Data Flow Dominated Embedded Software

Download or read book Source Code Optimization Techniques for Data Flow Dominated Embedded Software written by Heiko Falk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on source-to-source code transformations that remove addressing-related overhead present in most multimedia or signal processing application programs. This approach is complementary to existing compiler technology. What is particularly attractive about the transformation flow pre sented here is that its behavior is nearly independent of the target processor platform and the underlying compiler. Hence, the different source code trans formations developed here lead to impressive performance improvements on most existing processor architecture styles, ranging from RISCs like ARM7 or MIPS over Superscalars like Intel-Pentium, PowerPC, DEC-Alpha, Sun and HP, to VLIW DSPs like TI C6x and Philips TriMedia. The source code did not have to be modified between processors to obtain these results. Apart from the performance improvements, the estimated energy is also significantly reduced for a given application run. These results were not obtained for academic codes but for realistic and rep resentative applications, all selected from the multimedia domain. That shows the industrial relevance and importance of this research. At the same time, the scientific novelty and quality of the contributions have lead to several excellent papers that have been published in internationally renowned conferences like e. g. DATE. This book is hence of interest for academic researchers, both because of the overall description of the methodology and related work context and for the detailed descriptions of the compilation techniques and algorithms.

Book Traffic and QoS Management in Wireless Multimedia Networks

Download or read book Traffic and QoS Management in Wireless Multimedia Networks written by Yevgeni Koucheryavy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-20 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current book provides a final report of activity performed by the COST 290 Action, ‘‘Traffic and QoS Management in Wireless Multimedia Networks,’’ which ran from March 10, 2004, until June 3, 2008. After an introduction to the COST framework and the Action’s survey time-frame and activities, the main part of the book addresses a number of technical issues, which are structured into several chapters. All those issues have been carefully investigated by the COST 290 community during the course of the project – the information presented in this book can be regarded as ultimate for each particular topic; every open research issue addressed in the book is described carefully, corresponding existing studies are analyzed and results achieved by the COST 290 community are presented and compared, and further research directions are defined and analyzed. Because the book covers a wide area of research addressing issues of modern wired and wireless networking at different layers, starting from the physical layer up to the application layer, it can be recommended to be used by researchers and students to obtain a comprehensive analysis on particular research topics including related areas, to obtain broad and ultimate referencing, and to be advised on current open issues. COST 290 is one of the Actions of the European COST Program. Founded in 1971, COST is an intergovernmental framework for European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research, allowing the coordination of nationally funded research on a European level.
