Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: to increase the use of direct contact processes, the National Science Foundation sup ported a workshop on direct contact heat transfer at the Solar Energy Research Insti tute in the summer of 1985. We served as organizers for this workshop, which em phasized an area of thermal engineering that, in our opinion, has great promise for the future, but has not yet reached the point of wide-spread commercial application. Hence, a summary of the state of knowledge at this point is timely. The workshop had a dual objective: 1. To summarize the current state of knowledge in such a form that industrial practi tioners can make use of the available information. 2. To indicate the research and development needed to advance the state-of-the-art, indicating not only what kind of research is needed, but also the industrial poten tial that could be realized if the information to be obtained through the proposed research activities were available.

Book Engineering Design and Optimization of Thermofluid Systems

Download or read book Engineering Design and Optimization of Thermofluid Systems written by David S. K. Ting and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-02-17 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical and accessible introductory textbook that enables engineering students to design and optimize typical thermofluid systems Engineering Design and Optimization of Thermofluid Systems is designed to help students and professionals alike understand the design and optimization techniques used to create complex engineering systems that incorporate heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and mass transfer. Designed for thermal systems design courses, this comprehensive textbook covers thermofluid theory, practical applications, and established techniques for improved performance, efficiency, and economy of thermofluid systems. Students gain a solid understanding of best practices for the design of pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, HVAC systems, power generation systems, and more. Covering the material using a pragmatic, student-friendly approach, the text begins by introducing design, optimization, and engineering economics—with emphasis on the importance of engineering optimization in maximizing efficiency and minimizing cost. Subsequent chapters review representative thermofluid systems and devices and discuss basic mathematical models for describing thermofluid systems. Moving on to system simulation, students work with the classical calculus method, the Lagrange multiplier, canonical search methods, and geometric programming. Throughout the text, examples and practice problems integrate emerging industry technologies to show students how key concepts are applied in the real world. This well-balanced textbook: Integrates underlying thermofluid principles, the fundamentals of engineering design, and a variety of optimization methods Covers optimization techniques alongside thermofluid system theory Provides readers best practices to follow on-the-job when designing thermofluid systems Contains numerous tables, figures, examples, and problem sets Emphasizing optimization techniques more than any other thermofluid system textbook available, Engineering Design and Optimization of Thermofluid Systems is the ideal textbook for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students and instructors in thermal systems design courses, and a valuable reference for professional mechanical engineers and researchers in the field.

Book Atomization and Sprays

Download or read book Atomization and Sprays written by Arthur H. Lefebvre and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this long-time bestseller provides a framework for designing and understanding sprays for a wide array of engineering applications. The text contains correlations and design tools that can be easily understood and used in relating the design of atomizers to the resulting spray behavior. Written to be accessible to readers with a modest technical background, the emphasis is on application rather than in-depth theory. Numerous examples are provided to serve as starting points for using the information in the book. Overall, this is a thoroughly updated edition that still retains the practical focus and readability of the original work by Arthur Lefebvre.

Book Behaviour of Lithium Ion Batteries in Electric Vehicles

Download or read book Behaviour of Lithium Ion Batteries in Electric Vehicles written by Gianfranco Pistoia and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys state-of-the-art research on and developments in lithium-ion batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles. It summarizes their features in terms of performance, cost, service life, management, charging facilities, and safety. Vehicle electrification is now commonly accepted as a means of reducing fossil-fuels consumption and air pollution. At present, every electric vehicle on the road is powered by a lithium-ion battery. Currently, batteries based on lithium-ion technology are ranked first in terms of performance, reliability and safety. Though other systems, e.g., metal-air, lithium-sulphur, solid state, and aluminium-ion, are now being investigated, the lithium-ion system is likely to dominate for at least the next decade – which is why several manufacturers, e.g., Toyota, Nissan and Tesla, are chiefly focusing on this technology. Providing comprehensive information on lithium-ion batteries, the book includes contributions by the world’s leading experts on Li-ion batteries and vehicles.
