This book was released on 2022-10-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electrical power system is undergoing a revolution enabled by advances in telecommunications, computer hardware and software, measurement, metering systems, IoT, and power electronics. Furthermore, the increasing integration of intermittent renewable energy sources, energy storage devices, and electric vehicles and the drive for energy efficiency have pushed power systems to modernise and adopt new technologies. The resulting smart grid is characterised, in part, by a bi-directional flow of energy and information. The evolution of the power grid, as well as its interconnection with energy storage systems and renewable energy sources, has created new opportunities for optimising not only their techno-economic aspects at the planning stages but also their control and operation. However, new challenges emerge in the optimization of these systems due to their complexity and nonlinear dynamic behaviour as well as the uncertainties involved. This volume is a selection of 20 papers carefully made by the editors from the MDPI topic "Optimisation, Optimal Control and Nonlinear Dynamics in Electrical Power, Energy Storage and Renewable Energy Systems", which was closed in April 2022. The selected papers address the above challenges and exemplify the significant benefits that optimisation and nonlinear control techniques can bring to modern power and energy systems.

Book Nonlinear Power Flow Control Design

Download or read book Nonlinear Power Flow Control Design written by Rush D. Robinett III and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-08-10 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an innovative control system design process motivated by renewable energy electric grid integration problems. The concepts developed result from the convergence of research and development goals which have important concepts in common: exergy flow, limit cycles, and balance between competing power flows. A unique set of criteria is proposed to design controllers for a class of nonlinear systems. A combination of thermodynamics with Hamiltonian systems provides the theoretical foundation which is then realized in a series of connected case studies. It allows the process of control design to be viewed as a power flow control problem, balancing the power flowing into a system against that being dissipated within it and dependent on the power being stored in it – an interplay between kinetic and potential energies. Human factors and the sustainability of self-organizing systems are dealt with as advanced topics.

Book Control and Nonlinear Dynamics on Energy Conversion Systems

Download or read book Control and Nonlinear Dynamics on Energy Conversion Systems written by Herbert Ho-Ching Iu and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ever-increasing need for higher efficiency, smaller size, and lower cost make the analysis, understanding, and design of energy conversion systems extremely important, interesting, and even imperative. One of the most neglected features in the study of such systems is the effect of the inherent nonlinearities on the stability of the system. Due to these nonlinearities, these devices may exhibit undesirable and complex dynamics, which are the focus of many researchers. Even though a lot of research has taken place in this area during the last 20 years, it is still an active research topic for mainstream power engineers. This research has demonstrated that these systems can become unstable with a direct result in increased losses, extra subharmonics, and even uncontrollability/unobservability. The detailed study of these systems can help in the design of smaller, lighter, and less expensive converters that are particularly important in emerging areas of research like electric vehicles, smart grids, renewable energy sources, and others. The aim of this Special Issue is to cover control and nonlinear aspects of instabilities in different energy conversion systems: theoretical, analysis modelling, and practical solutions for such emerging applications. In this Special Issue, we present novel research works in different areas of the control and nonlinear dynamics of energy conversion systems.

Book Optimizing Nonlinear Dynamics in Energy System Planning and Control

Download or read book Optimizing Nonlinear Dynamics in Energy System Planning and Control written by Wai Keung Terrence Mak and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the physical dynamics underlying energy systems is essential in achieving stable operations, and reasoning about restoration and expansion planning. The mathematics governing energy system dynamics are often described by high-order differential equations. Optimizing over these equations can be a computationally challenging exercise. To overcome these challenges, early studies focused on reduced / linearized models failing to capture system dynamics accurately. This thesis considers generalizing and improving existing optimization methods in energy systems to accurately represent these dynamics. We revisit three applications in power transmission and gas pipeline systems. Our first application focuses on power system restoration planning. We examine transient effects in power restoration and generalize the Restoration Ordering Problem formulation with standing phase angle and voltage difference constraints to enhance transient stability. Our new proposal can reduce rotor swings of synchronous generators by over 50% and have negligible impacts on the blackout size, which is optimized holistically. Our second application focuses on transmission line switching in power system operations. We propose an automatic routine actively considering transient stability during optimization. Our main contribution is a nonlinear optimization model using trapezoidal discretization over the 2-axis generator model with an automatic voltage regulator (AVR). We show that congestion can lead to rotor instability, and variables controlling set-points of automatic voltage regulators are critical to ensure oscillation stability. Our results were validated against PowerWorld simulations and exhibit an average error in the order of 0.001 degrees for rotor angles. Our third contribution focuses on natural gas compressor optimization in natural gas pipeline systems. We consider the Dynamic Optimal Gas Flow problem, which generalizes the Optimal Gas Flow Problem to capture natural gas dynamics in a pipeline network. Our main contribution is a computationally efficient method to minimize gas compression costs under dynamic conditions where deliveries to customers are described by time-dependent mass flows. The scheme yields solutions that are feasible for the continuous problem and practical from an operational standpoint. Scalability of the scheme is demonstrated using realistic benchmark data.

Book Optimal operation configuration and sizing of energy storage and energy conversion technologies for residential house energy systems

Download or read book Optimal operation configuration and sizing of energy storage and energy conversion technologies for residential house energy systems written by Tobias Alexander Beck and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years a rapid growth in the interest in self-consumption of electricity generated by distributed electricity generation technologies such as rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems has been observed in the residential sector. Due to this development, future residential house energy systems will face an increased complexity with respect to operation, system configuration and sizing of generation and storage technologies. In this thesis, a mixed integer linear programming model for the integrated operation, configuration and sizing of house energy systems is developed and discussed with respect to its applicability to the specifics of self-consumption in residential dwellings. The conducted scenario analysis shows, that over a wide range of assumptions, PV is a robust measure to decrease the total cost of ownership for heat pump and gas boiler based house energy systems. The existence of a feed-in-tariff and the electricity price structure have a much larger influence on the results than the energy price development. A feed-in-tariff generally incentivizes larger PV systems with higher levels of self-sufficiency, whereas small demand-driven PV systems with high levels of self-consumption are favored in absence of a feed-in-tariff. Overall, the proposed model is regarded as applicable for the identified minimum flexibility requirements for the employed generation technologies. The results from the scenario computations provide a clear and robust picture of the role of electricity generation technologies and flexibility options for future house energy systems.
