Book excerpt: The present Volume contains the contributions to the fourth meeting on Unilateral Problems in Structural Analysis, held at Capri on June 14 to 16,1989. The preceding meetings took place at Villa Emma, near Udine, on May 1982, at Ravello on September 1983 and again at Villa Emma on June 1985. Publication of the proceedings started with the second meeting; the two resulting volumes were published by Springer Verlag, Vienna, under the series Cism Courses and Lectures. Unilateral Problems appear as a singular example of confluence of interests: they are the object of the attention of pure and applied mathematicians, of specialists in Continuum Mechanics and engineers. The idea which gave origin to this series of meetings was that of putting together people coming from such different fields. The result was an extremely fruitful exchange of experiences; it contributed, we believe, to the improvement of the knowledge in the area. The contents of the present Volume reflects the composite character of the meeting. There are contributions in the mathematical theory (Has linger, Panagiotopoulos, Romano), and studies in classical problems of Mechanics such as unilateral contact with friction (Kalker, Klarbring, Licht, Telega), Plasticity (Corradi, Del Piero, Owen) and composite materials and structures (Bruno, Leonardi). Some contributions deal with not yet completely explored questions of unilateral dynamics (Guo, Jean); finally, a contribution (Bennati) concerns the comparatively new subject of masonry structures, in which the unilateral constraint enters at the constitutive level.

Book excerpt: This book is motivated largely by a desire to solve shape optimization prob lems that arise in applications, particularly in structural mechanics and in the optimal control of distributed parameter systems. Many such problems can be formulated as the minimization of functionals defined over a class of admissible domains. Shape optimization is quite indispensable in the design and construction of industrial structures. For example, aircraft and spacecraft have to satisfy, at the same time, very strict criteria on mechanical performance while weighing as little as possible. The shape optimization problem for such a structure consists in finding a geometry of the structure which minimizes a given functional (e. g. such as the weight of the structure) and yet simultaneously satisfies specific constraints (like thickness, strain energy, or displacement bounds). The geometry of the structure can be considered as a given domain in the three-dimensional Euclidean space. The domain is an open, bounded set whose topology is given, e. g. it may be simply or doubly connected. The boundary is smooth or piecewise smooth, so boundary value problems that are defined in the domain and associated with the classical partial differential equations of mathematical physics are well posed. In general the cost functional takes the form of an integral over the domain or its boundary where the integrand depends smoothly on the solution of a boundary value problem.

It was the aim of the organizers of the meeting to bring together experts from different areas in the broad field of free boundary problems, where a certain emphasis was given to the numerical treatment and optimal control of free boundary problems. However, during the conference also a number papers leading to important new theoretical insights were presented. The strong connection between theory and applications finds its reflection in this monograph which contains papers of high theoretical and numerical interest, as well as applications to important practical problems. Many of the contributions are concerned with phase transition phenomena, a field which was of particular importance during the meeting; topics like spinodal decomposition, shape memory alloys, crystal growth and flow through porous media are addressed. Another field of major interest during the con ference was fluid flow; also this field is addressed in this volume. The volume opens with a contribution by H. W. Alt and I. Pawlow. In their paper the problem of spinodal decomposition is treated in the non-isothermal situation. For the first time the existence of a weak solution to the corresponding system of evolution equations could be proved. The results of some numerical experiments are also reported. Meanwhile. very effective software systems have been developed by various research teams although some mathematical problems (e. g. convergence) have not been solved satisfac torily yet. In order to make further advances and to find a common language between mathe maticians and mechanicians the "Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics" (GAMM) agreed on the foundation of a special Committee: "Discretization Methods in Solid Mechanics" focussing on the following problems: - Structuring of various methods (displacement functions, hybrid and mixed approaches, etc. >, - Survey of approach functions (Lagrange-/Hermite-polynominals, Spline-functions), - Description of singularities, - Convergence and stability, - Practical and theoretical optimality to all mentioned issues (single and interacting). One of the basic aims of the GAMM-Committee is the interdisciplinary cooperation between mechanicians, mathematicians, and users which shall be intensified. Thus, on September 22, 1985 the committee decided to hold a seminar on "Structural Optimization" in order to allow an exchange of experiences and thoughts between the experts of finite element methods and those of structural optimization. A GAMM-seminar entitled "Discretization Methods and Structural Optimization - Procedures and Applications" was hold on October 5-7, 1988 at the Unversity of Siegen.

Book excerpt: New trends in free boundary problems and new mathematical tools together with broadening areas of applications have led to attempts at presenting the state of art of the field in a unified way. In this monograph we focus on formal models representing contact problems for elastic and elastoplastic plates and shells. New approaches open up new fields for research. For example, in crack theory a systematic treatment of mathematical modelling and optimization of problems with cracks is required. Similarly, sensitivity analysis of solutions to problems subjected to perturbations, which forms an important part of the problem solving process, is the source of many open questions. Two aspects of sensitivity analysis, namely the behaviour of solutions under deformations of the domain of integration and perturbations of surfaces seem to be particularly demanding in this context. On writing this book we aimed at providing the reader with a self-contained study of the mathematical modelling in mechanics. Much attention is given to modelling of typical constructions applied in many different areas. Plates and shallow shells which are widely used in the aerospace industry provide good exam ples. Allied optimization problems consist in finding the constructions which are of maximal strength (endurance) and satisfy some other requirements, ego weight limitations. Mathematical modelling of plates and shells always requires a reasonable compromise between two principal needs. One of them is the accuracy of the de scription of a physical phenomenon (as required by the principles of mechanics).
