Book Distributed System Design

Download or read book Distributed System Design written by Jie Wu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Future requirements for computing speed, system reliability, and cost-effectiveness entail the development of alternative computers to replace the traditional von Neumann organization. As computing networks come into being, one of the latest dreams is now possible - distributed computing. Distributed computing brings transparent access to as much computer power and data as the user needs for accomplishing any given task - simultaneously achieving high performance and reliability. The subject of distributed computing is diverse, and many researchers are investigating various issues concerning the structure of hardware and the design of distributed software. Distributed System Design defines a distributed system as one that looks to its users like an ordinary system, but runs on a set of autonomous processing elements (PEs) where each PE has a separate physical memory space and the message transmission delay is not negligible. With close cooperation among these PEs, the system supports an arbitrary number of processes and dynamic extensions. Distributed System Design outlines the main motivations for building a distributed system, including: inherently distributed applications performance/cost resource sharing flexibility and extendibility availability and fault tolerance scalability Presenting basic concepts, problems, and possible solutions, this reference serves graduate students in distributed system design as well as computer professionals analyzing and designing distributed/open/parallel systems. Chapters discuss: the scope of distributed computing systems general distributed programming languages and a CSP-like distributed control description language (DCDL) expressing parallelism, interprocess communication and synchronization, and fault-tolerant design two approaches describing a distributed system: the time-space view and the interleaving view mutual exclusion and related issues, including election, bidding, and self-stabilization prevention and detection of deadlock reliability, safety, and security as well as various methods of handling node, communication, Byzantine, and software faults efficient interprocessor communication mechanisms as well as these mechanisms without specific constraints, such as adaptiveness, deadlock-freedom, and fault-tolerance virtual channels and virtual networks load distribution problems synchronization of access to shared data while supporting a high degree of concurrency

Download or read book Nonlinear Programming written by Dimitri Bertsekas and published by Athena Scientific. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 1100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and accessible presentation of algorithms for solving continuous optimization problems. It relies on rigorous mathematical analysis, but also aims at an intuitive exposition that makes use of visualization where possible. It places particular emphasis on modern developments, and their widespread applications in fields such as large-scale resource allocation problems, signal processing, and machine learning. The 3rd edition brings the book in closer harmony with the companion works Convex Optimization Theory (Athena Scientific, 2009), Convex Optimization Algorithms (Athena Scientific, 2015), Convex Analysis and Optimization (Athena Scientific, 2003), and Network Optimization (Athena Scientific, 1998). These works are complementary in that they deal primarily with convex, possibly nondifferentiable, optimization problems and rely on convex analysis. By contrast the nonlinear programming book focuses primarily on analytical and computational methods for possibly nonconvex differentiable problems. It relies primarily on calculus and variational analysis, yet it still contains a detailed presentation of duality theory and its uses for both convex and nonconvex problems. This on-line edition contains detailed solutions to all the theoretical book exercises. Among its special features, the book: Provides extensive coverage of iterative optimization methods within a unifying framework Covers in depth duality theory from both a variational and a geometric point of view Provides a detailed treatment of interior point methods for linear programming Includes much new material on a number of topics, such as proximal algorithms, alternating direction methods of multipliers, and conic programming Focuses on large-scale optimization topics of much current interest, such as first order methods, incremental methods, and distributed asynchronous computation, and their applications in machine learning, signal processing, neural network training, and big data applications Includes a large number of examples and exercises Was developed through extensive classroom use in first-year graduate courses

Book Telecommunications and Networking

Download or read book Telecommunications and Networking written by Udo W. Pooch and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the dividing line between traditional computing science and telecommunications quickly becomes blurred or disappears in today's rapidly changing environment, there is an increasing need for computer professionals to possess knowledge of telecommunications principles. Telecommunications and Networking presents a comprehensive overview of the interaction and relationship between telecommunications and data processing. The book's early chapters cover basic telecommunications vocabulary, common nomenclature, telecommunications fundamentals, as well as the important relationships among coding, error detection and correction, and noise. Later chapters discuss such topics as switching, timing, topological structures, routing algorithms, and teleprocessing. Other topics covered in detail include specific concerns inherent to computer communications, such as protocols, error detection and correction, network monitoring and security, and system validation. System designers and programmers can no longer be effective simply by understanding the tradeoffs between hardware and software. Telecommunications and Networking provides both computing professionals and students the fundamental computer communications concepts necessary to function in today's computer industry.

Book Parallel Computing on Distributed Memory Multiprocessors

Download or read book Parallel Computing on Distributed Memory Multiprocessors written by Füsun Özgüner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in microelectronic technology have made massively parallel computing a reality and triggered an outburst of research activity in parallel processing architectures and algorithms. Distributed memory multiprocessors - parallel computers that consist of microprocessors connected in a regular topology - are increasingly being used to solve large problems in many application areas. In order to use these computers for a specific application, existing algorithms need to be restructured for the architecture and new algorithms developed. The performance of a computation on a distributed memory multiprocessor is affected by the node and communication architecture, the interconnection network topology, the I/O subsystem, and the parallel algorithm and communication protocols. Each of these parametersis a complex problem, and solutions require an understanding of the interactions among them. This book is based on the papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Bilkent University, Turkey, in July 1991. The book is organized in five parts: Parallel computing structures and communication, Parallel numerical algorithms, Parallel programming, Fault tolerance, and Applications and algorithms.
