Book excerpt: In this paper, we study hybrid manufacturing/remanufacturing inventory systems that produce a single product to satisfy random demands over a finite planning horizon. In each period, the firm receives random demand and random product returns. A serviceable product can be manufactured from raw materials or remanufactured from a returned product. Both operations face random capacities modeled as positively dependent random variables. The firm's objective is to minimize the expected total discounted cost over the planning horizon. We partially characterize the firm's optimal policy for the general model and completely characterize it for the models with deterministic manufacturing or remanufacturing capacity, by two increasing functions with slopes at most one. For the special case with unlimited manufacturing capacity, we further characterize the optimal policy and obtain additional insights. In particular, we connect this model with an auxiliary dual-sourcing inventory model and show that they have the same optimal policy under certain conditions. Finally, we conduct a numerical study to derive further insights into the effects of random capacities. Among others, we find that ignoring randomness of the manufacturing capacity often incurs significant cost to the firm while the cost of ignoring capacity correlation is negligible.

The possibility that productscan be replaced by certain substitute productsexists in various application areas of production planning and inventory management. Substitutions can be useful for a number of reasons, among others to circ- vent production and supply bottlenecks and disruptions, increase the service level, reduce setup costs and times, and lower inventories and thereby decrease ca- tal lockup. Considering the current trend in industry towards shorter product life cycles and greater product variety, the importance of substitutions appears likely to grow. Closely related to substitutions are ?exible bills-of-materials and recipes in multi-level production systems. However, so far, the aspect of substitutions has not attracted much attention in academic literature. Existing lot-sizing models matching complex requirements of industrial optimization problems (e.g., constrained capacities, sequence-dependent setups, multiple resources) such as the Capacitated Lot-Sizing Problem with Sequence-Dependent Setups (CLSD) and the General Lot-Sizing and Scheduling Problem for Multiple Production Stages (GLSPMS) do not feature in substitution options.

Book excerpt: Today's manufacturing industries in many countries have developed systematic product recovery, remanufacturing and recycling procedures in an environmentally supportive manner to release the regulatory pressure as well as to achieve economic benefit. This thesis presents a mixed integer programming model addressing production planning problems in hybrid system of manufacturing and remanufacturing. The objective of solving the mathematical model is to minimize the total cost based on the optimal quantity of new items to manufacture and the optimal quantity of returned products to remanufacture in each period of the planning horizon. The proposed model has a distinctive feature that considers the uncertainty of remanufacturing time for the same type of returned products. A new heuristic solution method, similar to Silver-Meal heuristic for solving traditional lot-sizing problems, is developed to solve the considered production planning problems in hybrid manufacturing-remanufacturing systems is developed in this thesis. The developed heuristic is examined using various example problems generated in three dimensions (problem size, returned products quantity and category quantity). The results show that it can generate optimal or close-to-optimal solutions for all tested example problems with much reduced computational time. The model and the solutions were analyzed and sensitive analysis is conducted to investigate the performance of the developed model and solution method.

A new approach is the presented combination of disassembly-to-order planning and disassembly sequencing, which is called Flexible Disassembly Planning.
