Book Natural Resource Pricing and Rents

Download or read book Natural Resource Pricing and Rents written by Andrey Vavilov and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the economics of natural resource markets and pricing, as well as the field of natural resource economics in general. It presents the key contributions to this field of research, including the pioneering works and contemporary studies. The book highlights the basic principles and ideas underlying theoretical models of resource pricing. The models considered in the book underline the fundamental determinants of resource prices and the economic nature of rents for non-renewable and renewable resources. Besides the classical theory of exhaustible resource economics, the book includes several issues that are of high importance for global economic growth, such as the transition to alternative energy and the economics of climate change. The authors also consider the issues of commodity pricing and a resource cartel’s activity that are relevant to the world oil market. The book provides analytical solutions illustrated with numerical examples. It allows an intuitive understanding of the subject and the model inferences through graphical illustrations and an informal introduction. It, therefore, is a must-read for everybody interested in a better understanding of resource prices, resource markets, and resource economics.

Book Optimal Pricing use and exploration of uncertain natural resource stocks

Download or read book Optimal Pricing use and exploration of uncertain natural resource stocks written by Kenneth Joseph Arrow and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Units of natural resources, to be called 'mines', are assumed distributed over the unexplored territory according to a Poisson process in space. At any moment, total reserves, R, and unexplored land, X, are given. Society can determine the rate of consumption, c, and the rate of exploration (space per unit time), x. Reserves, R, are drawn down by consumption and increased by discoveries made during exploration; X is decreased by exploration. At any moment, the payoff to society is a concave function of c less a linear function of x. Payoffs in the future are discounted back to the present at a constant rate.

Book Models of Economic Growth with Environmental Assets

Download or read book Models of Economic Growth with Environmental Assets written by A. Beltratti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The connection between economic growth and the quality of the environment is a popular subject. Since the second half of the 1980s, there has been an increasingly frequent use of the term "sustainable development", to refer to the preoccupation that the production of goods and services may decrease standards of living. It is natural to analyze this question from the point of view of economic models, which may be helpful in at least identifying the main factors behind such preoccupations and perhaps in suggesting policy measures. Indeed, models are useful to discuss some relevant factors, like the structure of production of the economy, the type of preferences and goals pursued by agents, and the elements of uncertainty. This monograph will consider some of these themes: there will be a study of the analytical framework which can be used for the purpose of defining and analyzing sustainability, and some discussion of how to calibrate a restricted version of the model to empirical data. There will be also some analysis about which type of uncertainty should be incorporated into the model, and which objective functions may be useful for policy purposes. Also, there will be discussions about the key variables which should be included, and some description of a general framework.

Book Dynamic Timing Decisions Under Uncertainty

Download or read book Dynamic Timing Decisions Under Uncertainty written by Nguyen M. Hung and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jay Forrester's Economic Dynamics was published in 1971 and The Limits to Growth by Dennis Meadows and his associates appeared a year later. The publication of those two books gave rise to twenty years of intense research into the economics of exhaustible resources, research which everywhere has had a substantial impact both on public debate and on academic curricula. And now, just as that line of research is losing steam, economists are focussing on problems associated with the degradation of the natural environment, problems which call for models which, in their formal structure, are quite similar to those already developed in resource economics. This is therefore an appropriate moment for the appearance of a thorough exposition of the economics of exhaustible resources. For that is what Nguyen Manh Hung and Nguyen Van Quyen have provided. Their splendid new book covers equally well the older Hotelling-inspired theory of cake-eating and the economics of search and R&D designed to uncover new and cheaper sources of supply. It provides an entree to the whole subject of resource economics, as well as many new discoveries which will be of interest to experienced researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: of ecological (also biological) variables b which interact in their dynamic t evolution: det dbt dt = f (et, bt)' dt = 9 (et, bt)· Among the solution paths to this interaction between economic and ecologi cal variables, we look for those which are sustainable. Sustainable paths are typically those along which the values of certain key stocks are always pos itive, these key stocks being important environmental resources. The types of paths on which certain variables can be positive forever include station ary solutions with appropriate positivity conditions, or limit cycles or chaotic attractors satisfying the same positivity conditions. These paths, and the paths which approach them, constitute the set of sustainable paths. From amongst these we have to choose one or more which are in some sense the best. Note that rather than imposing positivity of certain stocks in the long run as a condition for sustainability, we would prefer to derive this as a characteristic of optimal solutions from more fundamental judgements about the valuation of stocks and flows: this is the route pursued by the papers in this volume. The introductory paper by Heal in Section I reviews these matters in gen eral terms, not going into technical details: it discusses the precedents for a concept of sustainability in welfare economics, and reviews alternative opti mality concepts and their connection to sustainability.

Book Optimal Growth with Many Sectors

Download or read book Optimal Growth with Many Sectors written by Franz Gehrels and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overriding force in economic growth is progress, both in general state of the arts, and in applied technology. These are qualitatively different and their optimization is explored with dynamic programming. With numerous goods and factors of production the production frontier becomes a hyperplane. Its dimensionality depends on the number and positioning of activities around the vector of factor endowments, as is shown with the simplex method. There may be market distortions of the ceiling and departures from it: policy measures are examined for the U.S. and Germany. Contents: Innovation and progress in the arts - Optimal saving and resource depletion - Multiplicity of goods and factors - Frontier expansion - Departures from the frontier and corrective measures.
