Although these topics constitute a requisite for a full understanding of the new developments in the area of reactor modeling and control, they are seidom treated together in a single book and, when they are, their presenta tion isoften directed to the mathematician.They are thus relatively unknown to the engineering community.

Algorithms for multivariate control, hierarchical decomposition, parameter tracking, model uncertainties actuator saturation effects and physical limits to state variables can be implemented on the basis of a consistent mathematical formulation. In this paper, good agreement is shown between a centralized and a hierarchical implementation of a controller for a hypothetical nuclear power plant subject to multiple demands. The performance of the hierarchical distributed system in the presence of localized subsystem failures is analyzed. 4 refs., 13 figs.

Book excerpt: This paper presents a new formulation of a class of nonlinear optimal control problems in which the system's signals are noisy and some system parameters are changing arbitrarily with time. The methodology is validated with an application to a nonlinear nuclear reactor model. A variational technique based on Pontryagin's Maximum Principle is used to filter the noisy signals, estimate the time-varying parameters, and calculate the optimal controls. The reformulation of the variational technique as an initial value problem allows this microprocessor-based algorithm to perform on-line filtering, parameter tracking, and control.

Book excerpt: The optimal control problem of a typical nuclear reactor power plant, which is described by a ninth-order nonlinear differential equation, having time-varying parameters, is considered. The nonlinear model complicates the optimal controller synthesis. Therefore, the approach of this work is to approximate the response of the reactor system by that of a second-order linear model. The model parameters are chosen to minimize the derivations between the system and model responses using a search routine. The optimal feedback parameters computed for the second-order model is used for suboptimal control of the system. The model parameters are updated to reflect the system nonlinearities as well as changes in the system parameters; the corresponding control scheme is adaptive. It is shown that for the operating conditions considered, the adaptive controller need not be on-line.
