Book Optimal Control Theory and Static Optimization in Economics

Download or read book Optimal Control Theory and Static Optimization in Economics written by Daniel Léonard and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-01-31 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimal control theory is a technique being used increasingly by academic economists to study problems involving optimal decisions in a multi-period framework. This textbook is designed to make the difficult subject of optimal control theory easily accessible to economists while at the same time maintaining rigour. Economic intuitions are emphasized, and examples and problem sets covering a wide range of applications in economics are provided to assist in the learning process. Theorems are clearly stated and their proofs are carefully explained. The development of the text is gradual and fully integrated, beginning with simple formulations and progressing to advanced topics such as control parameters, jumps in state variables, and bounded state space. For greater economy and elegance, optimal control theory is introduced directly, without recourse to the calculus of variations. The connection with the latter and with dynamic programming is explained in a separate chapter. A second purpose of the book is to draw the parallel between optimal control theory and static optimization. Chapter 1 provides an extensive treatment of constrained and unconstrained maximization, with emphasis on economic insight and applications. Starting from basic concepts, it derives and explains important results, including the envelope theorem and the method of comparative statics. This chapter may be used for a course in static optimization. The book is largely self-contained. No previous knowledge of differential equations is required.

Book Optimal and Robust Control

Download or read book Optimal and Robust Control written by Luigi Fortuna and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are many books on advanced control for specialists, there are few that present these topics for nonspecialists. Assuming only a basic knowledge of automatic control and signals and systems, Optimal and Robust Control: Advanced Topics with MATLAB® offers a straightforward, self-contained handbook of advanced topics and tools in automatic control. Techniques for Controlling System Performance in the Presence of Uncertainty The book deals with advanced automatic control techniques, paying particular attention to robustness—the ability to guarantee stability in the presence of uncertainty. It explains advanced techniques for handling uncertainty and optimizing the control loop. It also details analytical strategies for obtaining reduced order models. The authors then propose using the Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI) technique as a unifying tool to solve many types of advanced control problems. Topics covered include: LQR and H-infinity approaches Kalman and singular value decomposition Open-loop balancing and reduced order models Closed-loop balancing Passive systems and bounded-real systems Criteria for stability control This easy-to-read text presents the essential theoretical background and provides numerous examples and MATLAB exercises to help the reader efficiently acquire new skills. Written for electrical, electronic, computer science, space, and automation engineers interested in automatic control, this book can also be used for self-study or for a one-semester course in robust control.

Book Iterative Learning Control

Download or read book Iterative Learning Control written by David H. Owens and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-31 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a coherent and quite general theoretical approach to algorithm design for iterative learning control based on the use of operator representations and quadratic optimization concepts including the related ideas of inverse model control and gradient-based design. Using detailed examples taken from linear, discrete and continuous-time systems, the author gives the reader access to theories based on either signal or parameter optimization. Although the two approaches are shown to be related in a formal mathematical sense, the text presents them separately as their relevant algorithm design issues are distinct and give rise to different performance capabilities. Together with algorithm design, the text demonstrates the underlying robustness of the paradigm and also includes new control laws that are capable of incorporating input and output constraints, enable the algorithm to reconfigure systematically in order to meet the requirements of different reference and auxiliary signals and also to support new properties such as spectral annihilation. Iterative Learning Control will interest academics and graduate students working in control who will find it a useful reference to the current status of a powerful and increasingly popular method of control. The depth of background theory and links to practical systems will be of use to engineers responsible for precision repetitive processes.
