Book Optical Properties of Natural Minerals and Other Materials in the 350 50 000 CM 1 Spectral Region

Download or read book Optical Properties of Natural Minerals and Other Materials in the 350 50 000 CM 1 Spectral Region written by Marvin R. Querry and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflectance spectra were measured in the UV, VIS, and/or IR for several natural minerals and for several aqueous solutions of ZnCl2 and H3P04. Complex refractive indices were determined for most of these materials by applying Kramers-Kronig methods to the reflectance spectra. Powders of some of the natural minerals were pressed in to pellets in order to obtain the reflectance spectra. Gypsum was studied in the crystalline form, the powder-pellet form, and by transmittance spectra through KBr pellets containing minute quantities of gypsum. A method was developed for obtaining complex refractive indices from reflectance spectra of the pellets and transmittance spectra of the powder/KBr pellet. The best specularly reflecting pellets were formed from powders of smaller particle size and with forces of from 14 to 16 tons on the 13 mm dia circular face of the pellet. The complex refractive indices of water were also updated by applying Kramers-Kronig methods to a new composite k spectrum in order to determine the n spectrum. (Author).

Book Optical Constants of Minerals and Other Materials from the Millimeter to the Ultraviolet

Download or read book Optical Constants of Minerals and Other Materials from the Millimeter to the Ultraviolet written by R. J. Bell and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The optical constants of a wide variety of materials were measured for this contract period. This report covers the work done at the Univ. of Missouri-Rolla. The spectral range of the measurements covered from the millimeter to the ultraviolet. The millimeter and submillimeter (far infrared) measurements were made on the Rolla Campus and the infrared, visible and ultraviolet measurements were made on the Kansas City Campus. This wide spectral range means that Kramers-Kronig analyses can be made with better precision than when reflectance data is available only over a limited spectral range. The construction of a homodyning interferometer that is capable of measuring small (diameter approximately 1 cm) samples at millimeter wavelengths and samples that are highly absorbing. To our knowledge no other instruments with this capability exist. The measurement of refractive indices of gypsum, both as a single crystal and as a powder in the far and near infrared for use as a standard. The measurement of several types of graphite. We have found that Dixon 200-10 shows a large positive real part of the dielectric constant at low frequencies. This contradicts the usual free electron picture for graphite at low frequencies. Keywords: Minerals, Metals, Ultraviolet radiation, Infrared radiation, Liquids, Optical properties, Single crystals, Powders. (edc).

Download or read book Optical Mineralogy written by Colin D Gribble and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering theory and practice, this wide-ranging introductory textbook covers the main optical properties of rock-forming minerals that can be recognized under the polarizing microscope. The authors elucidate the basic elements of microscopy, the theory of light transmission through translucent minerals, and the properties of light reflected from opaque minerals. They discuss properties of the main silicate and non-silicate minerals, both translucent and opaque and how the optical properties may be used to identify a mineral. The book features many diagrams, summary tables, and four pages of color illustrations, making it an ideal textbook as well as an authoritative reference.

Book A Practical Introduction to Optical Mineralogy

Download or read book A Practical Introduction to Optical Mineralogy written by Colin Gribble and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microscopy is a servant of all the sciences, and the microscopic examina tion of minerals is an important technique which should be mastered by all students of geology early in their careers. Advanced modern text books on both optics and mineralogy are available, and our intention is not that this new textbook should replace these but that it should serve as an introductory text or a first stepping-stone to the study of optical mineralogy. The present text has been written with full awareness that it will probably be used as a laboratory handbook, serving as a quick reference to the properties of minerals, but nevertheless care has been taken to present a systematic explanation of the use of the microscope as well as theoretical aspects of optical mineralogy. The book is therefore suitable for the novice either studying as an individual or participating in classwork. Both transmitted-light microscopy and reflected-light microscopy are dealt with, the former involving examination of transparent minerals in thin section and the latter involving examination of opaque minerals in polished section. Reflected-light microscopy is increasing in importance in undergraduate courses on ore mineralisation, but the main reason for combining the two aspects of microscopy is that it is no longer acceptable to neglect opaque minerals in the systematic petrographic study of rocks. Dual purpose microscopes incorporating transmitted- and reflected-light modes are readily available, and these are ideal for the study of polished thin sections.

Book Optical Properties of Mixed Crystals

Download or read book Optical Properties of Mixed Crystals written by R.J. Elliott and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ``Optical Properties of Mixed Crystals'' is concerned with the description of optical processes in substitutionally disordered semiconductors and insulators which can be basically described through their elementary excitations. Two of the chapters relate to the phonon response including the effect of side bands on electron transitions. Two relate to electronic spectra, one on photoelectron spectroscopy and the other on excitons. A further chapter deals with magnons in magnetic crystals and a final chapter is related to fluctuations and band edge effects. Each chapter deals with a specific class of excitation, but the book makes it clear that the fundamental structure of the excitation spectra, including band formation, band tailing and localisation is common to every type of excitation. The volume shows how some basic concepts and ideas can be widely applied to bring coherence and understanding to a diverse area of solid state physics. It therefore provides an up-to-date summary of the experimental and theoretical situation in an important and rapidly developing field and brings together for the first time a discussion of the many different types of spectra which appear in mixed crystals.

Book Optical Properties of Ions in Solids

Download or read book Optical Properties of Ions in Solids written by Baldassare Di Bartolo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings report the lectures and seminars presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Optical Properties of Ions in Solids," held at Erice, Italy, June 6-21, 1974. The Institute was the first activity of the International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. The Institute consisted of a series of lectures on optical properties of ions in solids that, starting at a fundamental level, finally reached the current level of research. The sequence of lectures and the organization of the material taught were in keeping with a didactical presentation. In essence the Institute had the two-fold purpose of organizing what was known on the subject, and updating the knowledge in the field. Fif'teen series of lectures for a total of 44 hours were given. Five one-hour seminars and five twenty-minute seminars were presented. A total of 57 participants came from 40 laboratories in the following countries: Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Netherlands; Polatid, Romania, Switzerland, the United Ki~gdom, and the United States. The secretaries of the Institute were: D. Pacheco for the scientific aspects and A. La Francesca for the administrative aspects of the meeting. These proceedings report the lectures, the one-hour seminars (abstracts only) and the twenty-minute- seminars (titles only). The proceedings report also the contributions sent by Prof. K. Rebane and Dr. L. A. Rebane who, unfortunately, were not able to come.
