Book excerpt: New techniques were developed for making sensitive optical measurements on alloys over a wide range of the spectrum from the ultraviolet to the far infrared. Differences between samples with as little as 0.1 at .% impurity could be studied. The technique was used to optical studies of a number of noble metal-transition metal alloys. It was possible to make detailed quantitative comparisons between the optical data and the theory of dilute alloys. By comparisons between alloys which could be successfully described by the theory and those that could not, a systematic inadequacy of the theory was discovered. (Author).
