Book Optical Phase Conjugation Via Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in Multimode Optical Fiber

Download or read book Optical Phase Conjugation Via Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in Multimode Optical Fiber written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this thesis was to obtain phase conjugation of laser beam using the process of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fiber and to characterize the parameters involved. SBS in fiber is used for several reasons: high conversion efficiency, nanosecond response time, only the signal beam is required and fiber has a lower SBS threshold and superior power handling capabilities compared to either crystals or liquids. SBS theory is briefly described along with some results from previous work. Experimental results show the multimode fiber losses at coupled powers below about 2 W to be 16.4 + or - 0.3 dB/km at 514.5 nm. The transmitted and backscattered power exhibited behavior similar to that previously reported for single-mode fiber. The SBS threshold power increased for shorter fibers and when index matching liquid was used. The Stokes shift was 32.78 + or - 0.02 GHz and the measured gain coefficient was 10.2 times 10( -9) cm/W with an error of 10%. Most importantly, nonlinear optical phase conjugation was demonstrated for the first time. The polarization state of the pump beam was not reproduced, however. In addition, the SBS power exhibited bursts of strong fluctuations.

Book Optical Phase Conjugation Via Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in a Brillouin Ring Laser

Download or read book Optical Phase Conjugation Via Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in a Brillouin Ring Laser written by Jeffrey J. Druessel and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) was demonstrated in multimode optical fiber using a Brillouin ring laser configuration. The frequency shift of the SBS generated output beam was measured at 33.1 GHz. Pump laser power thresholds for SBS onset were determined for several ring cavity configurations and compared to theoretical values. optical phase conjugating properties of SBS in multimode optical fiber were investigated. No phase conjugation of an aberrated pump beam was evident in the Brillouin ring laser output.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is the most important example of a stimulated scattering process-light scattering that occurs when the intensity of the light field itself affects the propagating medium. A phenomenon that has been known of for some 35 years in solid state laser research, it has recently become relevant in the optical fiber ind

Book Phasing a Dual Optical Path System Using an Optical Fiber as a Phase Conjugate Mirror

This book was released on 2003-03-01 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase conjugation properties of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a short multimode fiber have been investigated with an eye towards its application for a multi-channel double pass master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system. In particular, properties of the SBS beam to compensate for the axial and transverse phase distortion between individual channels in a multi- channel amplifier system were studied. Two optical paths were created by covering half of the laser beam with a microscope slide, and also by spatially splitting the wavefronts with a 4 prism set-up. The Stokes beams that traversed the same optical paths as the pump beams were shown to compensate the phase distortion introduced by the different optical paths.

Book Phase Conjugate Fidelity of Focused Stimulated Brillouin Scattering

Download or read book Phase Conjugate Fidelity of Focused Stimulated Brillouin Scattering written by Lee Paul Schelonka and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first measurements of the effect of the focal intensity on the fidelity of phase conjugation in focused stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) are reported. Regardless of the strength of aberration, laser beams with focal intensities above 5 times the SBS threshold were conjugated accurately. As the focal intensity declined below this value, the phase conjugate fidelity declined. The maximum correctable aberration strength was that which reduced the focal intensity to near the SBS threshold. Higher laser powers corrected stronger aberrations. The pump laser was a single axial mode, tripled, Q-switched Neodymium:YAG, with a 6 nm pulse-width, operating at 355 nm. A computerized far-field image analysis system directly measured the focal intensity reduction due to aberrations. The focal intensity of the brightest far-field spot controlled both the reflectivity and the fidelity. A pair of laminar airflow, hot-wire array aberrators provided continuously variable, nearly sinusoidal phase modulation in the transverse axes. Lateral shearing interferometry and energy in the bucket measurements gave the Strehl ratio of the backscattered (reconstructed) beam, and hence the phase conjugate fidelity. A phenomenoligical theory for the phase conjugate fidelity of focused SBS was developed using resonator boundary conditions and a Gauss-Hermite mode decomposition. Analytical solutions for the case of no pump depletion were in qualitative agreement with the data. Keywords: Theses; Stimulated Brillouin scattering; Optical phase conjugation; Phase reconstruction; Nonlinear optics. (JHD).

Book Advanced High Power Near Infrared Fiber Lasers

Download or read book Advanced High Power Near Infrared Fiber Lasers written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments were conducted to study stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fibers with a goal of studying its applicability for phase conjugation of radiation from CW lasers, and of using SBS to demonstrate high power fiber lasers by coherent combination of beams from several fiber amplifiers. It was determined that usual plane-wave theory of SBS does not correctly predict the threshold when applied to SBS in single-mode step-index and multimode GRIN fibers. By properly accounting for the mode sizes and modal dispersion in the fibers, good agreement (within 15%) between experiments and theory was obtained. Good compensation of beam distortion was demonstrated via SBS in long multimode fibers (length of the order of 1 km), both with butt-coupling and focusing geometries. We have demonstrated the reduction of the SBS threshold, an increase in the SBS reflectivity and reduction in Stokes power fluctuations for seeded SBS in long multimode fibers. We have demonstrated distortion compensation via (beam cleanup) in the seeded SBS configuration.
