Book excerpt: The main objective of this thesis was to obtain phase conjugation of laser beam using the process of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fiber and to characterize the parameters involved. SBS in fiber is used for several reasons: high conversion efficiency, nanosecond response time, only the signal beam is required and fiber has a lower SBS threshold and superior power handling capabilities compared to either crystals or liquids. SBS theory is briefly described along with some results from previous work. Experimental results show the multimode fiber losses at coupled powers below about 2 W to be 16.4 + or - 0.3 dB/km at 514.5 nm. The transmitted and backscattered power exhibited behavior similar to that previously reported for single-mode fiber. The SBS threshold power increased for shorter fibers and when index matching liquid was used. The Stokes shift was 32.78 + or - 0.02 GHz and the measured gain coefficient was 10.2 times 10( -9) cm/W with an error of 10%. Most importantly, nonlinear optical phase conjugation was demonstrated for the first time. The polarization state of the pump beam was not reproduced, however. In addition, the SBS power exhibited bursts of strong fluctuations.

The frequency shift of the SBS generated output beam was measured at 33.1 GHz. Pump laser power thresholds for SBS onset were determined for several ring cavity configurations and compared to theoretical values. optical phase conjugating properties of SBS in multimode optical fiber were investigated. No phase conjugation of an aberrated pump beam was evident in the Brillouin ring laser output.

Practical applications of the phase conjugated wave are likely to be far-reaching. Optical phase conjugation (OPC) combines in itself aesthetic and pragmatic attractiveness, a synthesis that has made OPC a subject of general attention. The figure presents the ap proximate rate of publications (number of articles per year) on OPC in the world literature for recent years, the lower curve denoting the work carried out in the USSR. The efforts of a large unofficial international collective have yielded an impressive result. 150 100 50 1975 1980 At present, the physical pro ces ses underlying various OPC methods are quite understandable, and it is the physics of OPC to which our book is devoted. Practical and scientific applications of phase-conjugated waves, which are of no less interest, have been touched upon in short, as major achievements in this sphere are a matter of the future. Today there are two main methods of OPC: i) by backward stimulated light scattering, ii) by four-wave mixing. Naturally, much attention is given to these methods in our book which, after the introductory Chap. 1, can be divided into two almost independent parts - Chaps. 2 - 5, and Chaps. 6 - 8.

Book excerpt: The interaction of a strong, monochromatic beam of light with liquid Carbon Disulfide can produce a backscattered wave that is a phase conjugate replica of the input beam. A Neodymium-glass laser focused into an unguided cell returned 33% of the incident energy in the backscattered wave. Normal reflection from the glass surfaces of the lens and cell can account for only 2.5% of this energy. Observations were also made concerning the distortion repairing qualities of the phase conjugate wave and the sensitivity of the process to multimode excitation. Finally, appreciable visible fluorescence was observed when phase conjugation occur red. The simulations show that light scattered back through a phase aberrator produces a far field profile closely matching that of the incident beam; however, the near field intensity exhibits large and rapid spatial inhomogeneities across the entire aberrator, even for conjugation fidelities H as high as 98%.
