Book Generation and Parametric Amplification of Few Cycle Light Pulses at Relativistic Intensities

Download or read book Generation and Parametric Amplification of Few Cycle Light Pulses at Relativistic Intensities written by Alexander Kessel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on the development of a pioneering light source architecture of the so-called Petawatt Field Synthesizer (PFS) system, which is based on short-pulse pumped, optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA), driven by a homemade, 1-ps diode-pumped Yb:YAG. At a few-cycle pulse duration of the amplified pulses, this architecture yields record levels of peak power and temporal contrast, the latter boasting a 100-times faster rise time from the noise level to peak intensity of the pulse compared to conventional laser systems. This allows investigation of the true laser–solid interaction without premature plasma expansion and without lossy pulse cleaning by e.g. plasma mirrors. The book describes several concepts for the generation of broadband, high-energy and high-contrast seed pulses, as well as the OPCPA development, few-cycle pulse compression and contrast characterization in a concise and insightful manner. The theory chapter serves as an excellent and accessible primer on OPCPA and other nonlinear interactions, while the experimental parts provide an excellent description of the challenges of developing such a novel architecture and some of the innovative solutions to overcome them.

Book Third Generation Femtosecond Technology

Download or read book Third Generation Femtosecond Technology written by Hanieh Fattahi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-28 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis offers a thorough and informative study of high-power, high-energy optical parametric chirped pulse amplifications systems, the foundation of the next generation of femtosecond laser technology. Starting from the basics of the linear processes involved and the essential design considerations, the author clearly and systematically describes the various prerequisites of the nonlinear optical systems expected to drive attosecond physics in the coming decade. In this context, he gives an overview of methods for generating the broadband and carrier-envelope-phase stable seed pulses necessary for producing controlled electric-field waveforms in the final system; provides a guide to handling the high-power, high-energy pump lasers required to boost the pulse energy to the desired operating range; describes the design of the nonlinear optical system used to perform the amplification, including modes of operation for ultra-broadband infrared-visible pulses or narrowband (yet still ultrafast) pulses tunable over multiple octaves; and finally presents a prospective high-energy field synthesizer based upon these techniques. As such, this work is essential reading for all scientists interested in utilizing the newest generation of ultrafast systems.

Abstract: With the data explosion brought about by smartphones and tables during the past few years, how to keep these ever-increasing data in a stable, fast and green transmission and exchange environment is among the top problems for researchers in the communication field. As the backbone for the modern communication network, optical fiber communication is currently playing a key role in this on-going technology revolution. The optical amplifier is one of the most powerful tools of the optical communication system to cope with the data explosion. Distributed parametric amplification (DPA), with its potential green characteristics, i.e. noiseless, high-speed response, high power efficiency and wavelength flexibility, provides a promising amplification solution for the next generation of optical communication systems. As on specific type of optical parametric amplification (OPA), DPA is based on the combination of self-phase modulation (SPM), cross-phase modulation (XPM) and four-wave mixing (FWM) effects. DPA's main difference from OPA lies in the amplification medium. As DPA utilizes the most commonly adopted transmission fiber, i.e. single-mode fiber (SMF) and dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF), the signal transmission can thus be fulfilled simultaneously with the parametric amplification in the same optical fiber: DPA's configuration also brings another green feature, pump-power recycling, which further enhances the power efficiency of the communication system. As the fundamental study on DPA, first the gain spectrum is investigated. Both single- and two-pump DPAs are presented experimentally for WDM signals. In these experiments, residual pump power recycling is enabled by a concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) cells, Moreover, through experimental comparison with another important distributed amplification technology, distributed Raman amplification (DRA), DPA's advantages over DRA are demonstrated. When considering similar performance levels, DPA needs much lower pump power than DRA, which in return improves the system power efficiency. The performance of DPA cannot be judged unless it is assessed in more advanced application scenarios. Thus more advanced studies on DPA are conducted. The modulation format transparency is first presented with both phase (differential phase-shift keying (DPSK)) and intensity (on-off keying (OOK)) modulation formats, and our experimental results show the superiority of DPSK over traditional OOK. Furthermore, from the perspective of wavelength flexibility, we have demonstrated, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, a DPA system at the 1.3μm telecommunication window, which provides a potentially green amplification scheme at this transmission band. All these experiments, to a certain extent, certify the feasibility of DPA to become a green optical fiber amplifier. Finally, to demonstrate DPA's compatibility within a more complicated communication system, we propose a power-efficient UWB/DPA system for the "last mile." After experiments on photonic UWB pulse generation and the supporting DPA system, the hybrid UWB/DPA system is demonstrated with preliminary simulation results. My research efforts presented in this thesis all aim at the practical application of the DPA scheme into the next-generation of green communication systems. If further armed with the phase-sensitive configuration, DPA's potential as a green amplifier wi

Today there is a growing a demand for optical source generation beyond conventional telecommunication wavelength bands. However, high quality and versatile optical source is generally not available over those wavelength bands due to the lack of efficient gain medium. Thanks to fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA), which is based on the third order nonlinear susceptibility of optical fibers, offers ultrafast response, wide-gain bandwidth, high gain and large frequency detune from the pump, serves as a promising candidate for signal amplification over those wavelength bands. By using the corresponding fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) configuration, widely tunable source from continuous-wave (CW) to sub-picosecond pulses can be potentially generated to serve different applications from communication to biomedical imaging. In this thesis, we first demonstrate an all-fiber widely-tunable picosecond FOPO using highly-nonlinear fiber (HNLF). The tuning range is as wide as 250 nm, which is higher than previous picosecond FOPOs reported in the 1550-nm region. Second, time-dispersion tuning of the FOPO is investigated with fixed pump wavelength. It is a relatively simple and economic approach, and there will be no filter induced cavity loss. We then describe using FOPO to generated nearly-transform limited sub-picosecond pulses with a 60-nm tuning range. Another FOPO with a tuning range of 440-nm with dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) as the gain medium is proposed and demonstrated. Compared with FOPOs demonstrated using HNLF as the gain medium, the use of DSF offers two key advantages: a wider tuning range and a narrower linewidth. In addition to picosecond FOPO, CW FOPO is also of great interest in fiber optical communications and biomedical imaging. We also demonstrate an all-fiber CW single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) FOPO with tuning range covers the S and L bands. SLM oscillation with a side-mode suppression ratio greater than 43 dB is achieved, which has been extended to 1-μm region under stable operation. Apart from static tuning, dynamic wavelength tuning of the FOPO is also discussed in this thesis with a cumulative speed exceeds 4,000,000 nm/s, which is higher than previous work reported in wavelength-swept FOPOs. The high-speed swept source would be useful in biomedical imaging and sensing applications. The amplification of the sub-picosecond pulses of the FOPO output is also investigated, for the first time to our knowledge, by using a fiber optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier(FOPCPA).The totally fiber-integrated nature of the whole system allows complete self-alignment and further integration to other fiber-based systems. All these research effort will show the versatility of FOPO techniques for generating wide range of optical sources for varies applications. These schemes may be useful in generating CW and short pulse for potential optical communication and biomedical imaging in non-conventional wavelength bands.
