Book Development of a Spatially Resolved Optical Technique for Measuring Heat Flux and Thermal Footprint of Firebrand Piles

Download or read book Development of a Spatially Resolved Optical Technique for Measuring Heat Flux and Thermal Footprint of Firebrand Piles written by Yasin M. Abul-Huda and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firebrand showers have been identified as a primary mechanism of fire spread and cause of destruction in wildland-urban interface fires. The heat transfer processes that follow deposition of firebrands and lead to ignition have received little attention until recently. While conventional methods of measuring temperature and heat flux provide bulk-averaged information regarding deposited firebrand piles, they fall short of elucidating essential information such as surface contact areas and heat feed-back mechanisms, that are necessary for understanding ignition propensity and developing high-fidelity physics-based models. This work describes the development and implementation of a spatially resolved optical technique for quantifying heat flux and thermal footprint of firebrand piles using laser induced phosphorescence of YAG:Dy. The technique involves coating the surface of a UVtransparent substrate with YAG:Dy phosphors to yield surface temperature. Heat flux is inferred through simultaneously measuring the top and bottom substrate surface temperatures after they are coated with a staggered grating pattern. An intensity ratio over two separate spectral regions of emission is used to calibrate the optical measurement system and infer temperature from 300 K - 1100 K over a 7 cm diameter interrogation area. The uncertainty in temperature and heat flux are discussed in detail. The spatial resolution of the temperature and heat flux measurements are 0.5 mm and 4 mm, respectively.

  • Author : Franz Mayinger

  • Pages : 463 pages

Download or read book Optical Measurements written by Franz Mayinger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-03-12 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing possibilities of computer-aided data processing have caused a new revival of optical techniques in many areas of mechanical and chemical en gineering. Optical methods have a long tradition in heat and mass transfer and in fluid dynamics. Global experimental information is not sufficient for developing constitution equations to describe complicated phenomena in fluid dynamics or in transfer processes by a computer program . Furthermore, a detailed insight with high local and temporal resolution into the thermo-and fluiddynamic situations is necessary. Sets of equations for computer program in thermo dynamics and fluid dynamics usually consist of two types of formulations: a first one derived from the conservation laws for mass, energy and momentum, and a second one mathematically modelling transport processes like laminar or turbulent diffusion. For reliably predicting the heat transfer, for example, the velocity and temperature field in the boundary layer must be known, or a physically realistic and widely valid correlation describing the turbulence must be avail able. For a better understanding of combustion processes it is necessary to know the local concentration and temperature just ahead of the flame and in the ignition zone.

Book Metrology for Fire Experiments in Outdoor Conditions

Download or read book Metrology for Fire Experiments in Outdoor Conditions written by Xavier Silvani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-22 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural fires can be considered as scale-dependant, non-linear processes of mass, momentum and heat transport, resulting from a turbulent reactive and radiative fluid medium flowing over a complex medium, the vegetal fuel. In natural outdoor conditions, the experimental study of natural fires at real scale needs the development of an original metrology, one able to capture the large range of time and length scales involved in its dynamic nature and also able to resist the thermal, mechanical and chemical aggression of flames on devices. Robust, accurate and poorly intrusive tools must be carefully set-up and used for gaining very fluctuating data over long periods. These signals also need the development of original post-processing tools that take into account the non-steady nature of their stochastic components. Metrology for Fire Experiments in Outdoor Conditions closely analyzes these features, and also describes measurements techniques, the thermal insulation of fragile electronic systems, data acquisition, measurement errors and optimal post-processing algorithms. This book is intended for practitioners as a reference guide for optimizing measurements techniques in an outdoor environment. Advanced-level students and researchers will also find the book invaluable.
