Download or read book Laser Theory written by Hermann Haken and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, written by one of the pioneers of laser theory, is now considered a classic by many laser physicists. Originally published in the prestigious Encyclopedia of Physics series, it is now being republished in paperback to make it available not only to professors and scientists, but also to students. It presents a thorough treatment of the theory of laser resonators, the quantum theory of coherence, and the quantization of electromagnetic fields. Especial emphasis is placed on the quantum-mechanical treatment of laser light by means of quantum-mechanical Langevin equations, the density matrix equation, and the Fokker-Planck equation. The semiclassical approach and the rate equa tion approach are also presented. The principles underlying these approaches are used to derive the relevant equations, from which, in turn, the various properties of laser light are derived. Preface. The concept of the laser came into existence more than a decade ago when SCHAWLOW and TOWNES showed that the maser principle could be extended to the optical region. Since then this field has developed at an incredible pace which hardly anybody could have foreseen. The laser turned out to be a meeting place for such different disciplines as optics (e. g. spectroscopy). optical pumping, radio engineering, solid state physics, gas discharge physics and many other fields. The underlying structure of the laser theory is rather simple.

Book Selected Works of Emil Wolf

Download or read book Selected Works of Emil Wolf written by Emil Wolf and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable book presents most of the important papers of Emil Wolf, published over half-a-century. It covers chiefly diffraction theory (especially the analysis of the focal region), the theory of direct and inverse scattering, phase-space methods in quantum mechanics, the foundation of radiometry, phase conjugation and coherence theory. Several papers which have become classics of the optical literature are included, such as those on Wolf''s rigorous formulation of the theory of partial coherence and partial polarization, the introduction of diffraction tomography, and his discovery of correlation-induced shifts of spectral lines (often called the Wolf effect). There are also papers dealing with the historical development of optics and some review articles. Contents: Diffraction; Radiation Theory and String Excitations; Coherence and Statistical Optics; Scattering; Foundations of Radiometry; Articles of Historical Interest; Analyticity, Causality and Dispersion Relations; Scientists Who Created the World of Optics; The Development of Optical Coherence Theory; Recollections; Commencement Remarks; Publications of Emil Wolf. Readership: Physicists and engineers, particularly optical scientists and optical engineers.

Book Interactions between Electromagnetic Fields and Matter

Download or read book Interactions between Electromagnetic Fields and Matter written by Karl-Heinz Steiner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interactions between Electromagnetic Fields and Matter deals with the principles and methods that can amplify electromagnetic fields from very low levels of signals. This book discusses how electromagnetic fields can be produced, amplified, modulated, or rectified from very low levels to enable these for application in communication systems. This text also describes the properties of matter and some phenomenological considerations to the reactions of matter when an action of external fields results in a polarization of the particle system and changes the bonding forces existing in the matter. This book considers the above phenomena in detail by explaining matter as a conglomeration of charged mass points in the electromagnetic field. Quantum mechanics and Maxwell's theory can then account for the precise description of the interactions between the electromagnetic fields and matter. This book then describes special processes such as 1) the static and quasistatic interactions and 2) dynamic processes, particularly the resonance process. This text also defines a general form for electric and magnetic reactions using the generalized field equation. This book also cites the anharmonic oscillator and the single spin as different examples of electric and magnetic dipole interactions. This text is suitable for electrical engineers, radio technicians, physicists whose work is in quantum mechanics, and engineers interested in electro-magnetism theory.
