Book excerpt: SHIVA, the 10-kilojule Neodymium-glass laser for the High Energy Laser Facility at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory has been built, exceeded minimum energy predictions, and is currently being applied to laser fusion experiments. The twenty, 20-cm aperture arms contain a total of about 1500 optical components for beam propagation, and another 1000 elements are used for control systems and diagnostics. In order to focus the energy on targets smaller than 1 mm in diameter, it has been necessary to maintain very high optical quality throughout the system. The manufacturing and testing technologies involved in meeting this challenge have been noteworthy and have encompassed glass manufacturing, optical finishing, and coating, for elements as diverse as Faraday rotators, laser rods and disks and aspheric lenses.

The cost, schedule and quality of the optics are the driving parameters for the entire program and many factors are involved in controlling, monitoring and evaluating these parameters. These factors include (1) the procurement cycle, (2) knowledge of the vendors, (3) realistic specifications, (4) understanding of the fabrication process, (5) the quality control and test requirements. Guidelines and examples of the methods used in the procurement and qualification of the optics in Shiva will be presented.

Book excerpt: Solid state lasers for fusion experiments must reliably deliver maximum power to small (approximately .5 mm) targets from stand-off focal distances of 1 m or more. This requirement places stringent limits upon the optical quality, resistance to damage, and overall performance of the several major components--amplifiers, Faraday isolators, spatial filters--in each amplifier train. Component development centers about achieving (1) highest functional material figure of merit, (2) best optical quality, and (3) maximum resistance to optical damage. Specific examples of the performance of large aperture components will be presented within the context of the Argus and Shiva laser systems, which are presently operational at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. Shiva comprises twenty amplifiers, each of 20 cm output clear aperture. Terawatt beams from these amplifiers are focused through two opposed, nested clusters of f/6 lenses onto such targets. Design requirements upon the larger aperture Nova laser components, up to 35 cm in clear aperture, will also be discussed; these pose a significant challenge to the optical industry.

This requirement places stringent limits upon the optical quality of the several major components - amplifiers, Faraday isolators, spatial filters - in each amplifier train. Residual static aberrations in optical components are transferred to the beam as it traverses the optical amplifier chain. Although individual components are typically less than lambda/20 for components less than 10 cm clear aperture; and less than lambda/10 for components less than 20 cm clear aperture; the large number of such components in optical series results in a wavefront error that may exceed one wave for modern solid state lasers. For pulse operation, the focal spot is additionally broadened by intensity dependent nonlinearities. Specific examples of the performance of large aperture components will be presented within the context of the Argus and Shiva laser systems, which are presently operational at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Design requirements upon the larger aperture Nova laser components, up to 74 cm in clear aperture, will also be discussed; these pose a significant challenge to the optical industry.

Book excerpt: In the laser fusion program at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, no target experiment is complete unless it is complemented by careful measurements of the laser pulse that irradiates the target. For this purpose, an incident beam diagnostics (IBD) package has been designed for the Shiva laser. The package will furnish data on items such as the total energy and the focusable energy out of the laser chain, and the spatial and temporal energy and power distribution at the target plane. Understanding laser-plasma interactions requires knowledge of the amount of 1.06 .mu.m light energy that is scattered in various directions from the target. The light energy that is scattered toward the beam focusing lens is analyzed by a reflected beam diagnostic (RBD) package containing a calorimeter, a multiple image camera and a TV camera. This paper describes the detailed design and operation of the IBD and RBD packages as tools to align spatial filters and targets, as well as to diagnose the laser beams and target reflectivity.

Optical element damage in the disk amplifier from the combined fluence of the primary laser beam and the Xenon flash lamps that pump the cavity was discussed. Assembly and cleaning techniques were described which have improved optical element life by minimizing particulate and optically absorbing film contamination on assembled amplifier structures. A Class-100 vertical flaw clean room used for assembly and inspection of laser components was also described. The life of a disk amplifier was extended from less than 50 shots to 500 shots through application of these assembly and cleaning techniques. (RME).

Book excerpt: The organizing philosophy and components of a target diagnostics data acquisition system designed and implemented at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLL) Shiva Laser Fusion Facility are described. Several features of the system are unique: a central trigger distribution system, fiber optic communications, and fiber optics for the timing, trigger, and control and monitoring links. The system also uses CAMAC instrumentation, transient digitizers, oscilloscopes, and LLL-designed modules and packages, as well as single-point grounding of each diagnostic installation. Distributed instrumentation packages provide instrumentation flexibility and analog-to-digital conversion as close to each diagnostic sensor as practical.
