Book Optical Chemical and Biological Oceanographic Conditions on the Scotian Shelf and in the Eastern Gulf of Maine in 2012

Download or read book Optical Chemical and Biological Oceanographic Conditions on the Scotian Shelf and in the Eastern Gulf of Maine in 2012 written by C. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program (AZMP) was implemented in 1998 with the aim of increasing Fisheries and Oceans Canada's (DFO's) capacity to understand, describe, and forecast the state of the marine ecosystem, and quantifying the changes in ocean physical, chemical, and biological properties. A critical element in the observational program of AZMP is an annual assessment of the distribution and variability of nutrients and the plankton they support. Herein, the optical, chemical, and biological oceanographic (lower trophic levels) conditions observed in 2012 in the Maritimes Region, including the Georges Bank/Gulf of Maine/Bay of Fundy system and the Scotian Shelf are reviewed. In the context of record warm conditions in 2012, this report focused on evaluating changes in phytoplankton and zooplankton annual production cycles and community composition.--Document.

Book excerpt: As climate change, resource overexploitation, and pollution leave ever more visible marks, ocean ecosystems, economies, and people are all affected. With coasts on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic, Canada faces a formidable challenge in building resilient, sustainable oceans and supporting the communities that rely on them. Sea Change reports on the OceanCanada Partnership, a multidisciplinary project to take stock of what we know about Canada’s oceans, construct possible scenarios for coastal regions, and create a national dialogue and vision. Three themes emerge from this impressive synthesis of social, cultural, economic, and environmental research: ocean change, access to ocean resources, and ocean governance. Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars and practitioners focus on finding solutions to rapid environmental and social transformation, outlining the implications for legislation and offering policy recommendations. Increasingly, civil society will have to advocate for oceans, and Sea Change will empower the voices of those who take up that task.

Book Characterization and Modeling of Inherent Optical Properties in the Gulf of Maine

Download or read book Characterization and Modeling of Inherent Optical Properties in the Gulf of Maine written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our longterm goal is to contribute to a fundamental understanding of the sources of biological, physical and optical variability in coastal ocean systems. Particular focus is on applications useful for studying important ecological processes and the links between phytoplankton properties and physical processes in coastal regions. The overall objective of this project is to improve understanding of the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank system through characterization and modeling of optical properties in the context of physical and biological processes. We wish to describe the processes controlling space/time variability in the various constituents (CDOM, phytoplankton, sediment, detrital particles) that determine the optical properties of this region. As planned, our effort to date has been concentrated on processing and quality control for optical and hydrographic data collected during 5 cruises during 1997-1999. We have also made progress towards compiling an accessible database that includes our observations plus those collected by several other investigators working in the Gulf of Maine region. The compiled database is now being used to generate empirically driven parameterizations of optical variability for the Gulf of Maine region, which will in turn be used to construct an optical submodel (to later be coupled with biological and physical models). Our preliminary efforts to characterize optical variability present in the Gulf of Maine at different times of year have documented that some properties must be considered seasonally variable, while others seem more temporally stable. These observations will be quantitatively incorporated into the optical model we are constructing. Ultimately, we expect that integrating models of optical properties into our physically realistic ecosystem simulations will contribute to better understanding of the processes contributing to optical variability in coastal waters.

Book Oceanographic Conditions Off the Scotian Shelf During Mesopelagic Resource Inventory Cruises 1984 89

Download or read book Oceanographic Conditions Off the Scotian Shelf During Mesopelagic Resource Inventory Cruises 1984 89 written by R. G. Halliday and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents and analyzes water temperature and salinity data collected during 11 mesopelagic resource inventory cruises in the continental slope region between 55 and 65 degrees west longitude. The data analysis results define water mass boundary positions in the upper 450 meters during the period of each cruise. Charts of surface boundary conditions based on satellite infrared imagery aid in interpreting the cruise data, and small numbers of bathythermograph casts to 1830 meters and conductivity-temperature-depth recorder casts to 1000 meters provide data for deeper waters. The report also describes the variation of temperature and salinity over time at a fixed location (41 degrees north, 61 degrees 30 minutes west) based on three occupations for periods of 1.5 to 3.5 days.

This book was released on 2010-02-11 with total page 757 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a product of the joint JGOFS (Joint Global Ocean Flux Study)/LOICZ (Land–Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone) Continental Margins Task Team which was established to facilitate continental margins research in the two projects. It contains signi cant information on the physical, biogeochemical, and ecosystems of continental margins nationally and regionally and provides a very valuable synthesis of this information and the physical, biogeochemical and ecosystem processes which occur on continental margins. The publication of this book is timely as it provides a very strong foundation for the development of the joint IMBER (Integrated Marine Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems Research)/LOICZ Science Plan and Implemen- tion Strategy for biogeochemical and ecosystems research in the continental margins and the impacts of global change on these systems. This initiative will move forward integrated biogeochemical and ecosystems research in the continental margins. We thank all the contributors to this volume and especially Kon-Kee Liu who has dedicated a great deal of time to ensuring a high-quality book is published.
