Book Life Reimagined

Download or read book Life Reimagined written by Barbara Bradley Hagerty and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dynamic and inspiring exploration of the new science that is redrawing the future for people in their forties, fifties, and sixties for the better—and for good. There’s no such thing as an inevitable midlife crisis, Barbara Bradley Hagerty writes in this provocative, hopeful book. It’s a myth, an illusion. New scientific research explodes the fable that midlife is a time when things start to go downhill for everybody. In fact, midlife can be a great new adventure, when you can embrace fresh possibilities, purposes, and pleasures. In Life Reimagined, Hagerty explains that midlife is about renewal: It’s the time to renegotiate your purpose, refocus your relationships, and transform the way you think about the world and yourself. Drawing from emerging information in neurology, psychology, biology, genetics, and sociology—as well as her own story of midlife transformation—Hagerty redraws the map for people in midlife and plots a new course forward in understanding our health, our relationships, even our futures.

Book The Promise of Adolescence

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2019-07-26
  • ISBN : 0309490111
  • Pages : 493 pages

Download or read book The Promise of Adolescence written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.

  • Author : Great Britain. Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills
  • Publisher : The Stationery Office
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 9780101755528

Download or read book The Learning Revolution written by Great Britain. Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This white paper outlines the Government's proposals to foster and encourage informal adult learning. Informal adult learning is part-time, non-vocational learning where the primary purpose is not to gain a qualification but learning for its intrinsic value. People participate for enjoyment and are driven by their desire for personal fulfillment or intellectual, creative and physical stimulation. Activities cover a huge range, from dance classes and book clubs, visits to museums, galleries and historic properties, online research, volunteer projects. Such activity contributes to the health and well-being of communities by building the confidence and resilience of the individuals involved, developing social relationships, and acting as a stepping stone to further learning and skill development. The Government will establish a clear identity for informal learning and promote four initiatives: a Learning Pledge; a Festival of Learning; an Open Space Movement and a Transformation Fund of £20 million. Partner organisations from the private and public sector will be invited to contribute to the strategy. Increased access to informal adult learning will be addressed through: widening learning opportunities for older people; reaching out to the disadvantaged; developing a package of support for community learning champions; increasing availability of informal working in the workplace. Technology and broadcasting are seen as crucial in transforming the way people learn: 65 per cent of all households now have an internet connection and 90 percent of the population has at least one digital television. Government will act as a catalyst, investing additional funding in building the capacity and linkages that enable innovative learning opportunities to flourish.

Book Aging Social Policies

Download or read book Aging Social Policies written by Robbyn R. Wacker and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2010-12-07 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our population is aging. What will we do about it? Due to population explosion and a global increase in average life expectancies, an unprecedentedly high percentage of the world′s population is aging. By the middle of this century there will be up to 2 billion individuals over the age of 65, a demographic shift never before experienced in our human history. In addition, declining birth rates in industrialized countries means a decrease in the number of adults under 64. In Aging Social Policies: An International Perspective the authors consider how policy – domestic and international – affects and will continue to affect the lives of our aging population.

Book Extending Working Life for Older Workers

Download or read book Extending Working Life for Older Workers written by Alysia Blackham and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK population is ageing rapidly. While age discrimination laws are seen as having broad potential to address the 'ageing challenge' and achieve instrumental and intrinsic objectives in the context of employment, it is unclear what impact they are having in practice. This monograph addresses two overarching research questions in the employment field: How are UK age discrimination laws operating in practice? How (if at all) could UK age discrimination laws be improved? A reflexive law theoretical standpoint is employed to investigate these issues, applying a mixed methods research design that engages qualitative, quantitative, doctrinal and comparative elements. This book demonstrates the substantial limitations of the Equality Act 2010 (UK) for achieving instrumental and intrinsic objectives. Drawing on qualitative expert interviews, statistical analysis and organisational case studies, it illustrates the failure of age discrimination laws to achieve attitudinal change in the UK, and reveals the limited prevalence of proactive measures to support older workers. Integrating doctrinal analysis, comparative analysis of Finnish law, and the Delphi method, it proposes targeted legal and policy changes to address demographic change, and offers an agenda for reform that may increase the impact of age discrimination laws, and enable them to respond effectively to demographic ageing. Runner up of the 2017 SLS Peter Birks Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship. The author was also awarded the 2020 ISA-RCSL Adam Podgórecki Junior Prize.
