Download or read book Satellite Regulation in Europe written by Stéphan Le Goueff and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commercial satellite activities have undergone enormous growth in the last decades, and so has the complexity of the legal framework within which these activities have to be carried out. Because of the international character of satellite activities, this legal framework has often been established on an international or regional level, through institutions such as the European Union, the International Telecommunications Union, the World Trade Organisation and the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations. It is not an easy task to obtain a complete picture of this legal framework. For this reason, it was considered opportune to assemble all relevant legal texts and materials established by these institutions into one book. As telecommunications is currently the most important commercial application of satellites, it should come as no surprise to anyone that the main part of the book is dedicated to this application, simply because of the fact that the legal framework is furthest developed. However, relevant texts and materials for the three other commercial satellite activities - broadcasting, remote sensing and navigation - have also been included. This book is a very valuable tool for all those involved in the European satellite business or for those who want to get involved in it, whether they are lawyers or non-lawyers; everyone is affected by the laws and regulations governing this field and everyone should be aware of the limitations these laws and regulations might impose.
Download or read book Capacity Mechanisms in EU Energy Law written by Kaisa Huhta and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2019-07-17 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many states – including European Union (EU) Member States – subsidise energy producers in order to guarantee the uninterrupted availability of affordable electricity. This book presents the first in-depth examination of how these so-called capacity mechanisms are addressed in EU law and how they affect the functioning of the EU energy markets. Focusing on the existing legal framework as well as the new provisions of the Clean Energy for All Europeans package for capacity mechanisms, the author addresses and analyses such aspects as the following: the structure and functioning of the EU electricity markets; EU’s competence to address security of supply and Member States’ margin of discretion; sector-specific rules for security of supply; legal conditions for subsidising generation adequacy; capacity remuneration under the EU State aid regime; free movement rules that address generation adequacy measures; balancing different interests of EU energy law in the context of generation adequacy; and the requirement of proportionality in State intervention to ensure generation adequacy. The analysis draws on relevant sources of EU law (treaties, regulations and directives) as well as the case law of the European Court of Justice and the General Court, together with soft law instruments such as Commission guidelines. Scholarly sources include not only legal literature but also work on energy policy, energy engineering and energy economics. As a detailed analysis of how capacity mechanisms address issues arising in the context of the enegy transition – and how the system of EU law applicable to capacity mechanisms should be interpreted to further the objectives of EU energy law – the book will help policymakers and legislators in Member States to understand the changing legal setting for capacity mechanisms. Lawyers, academics and other professionals who deal with EU electricity markets in the EU and beyond are sure to welcome its detailed description and analysis.

Download or read book The EU the US and Global Climate Governance written by Christine Bakker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a critical analysis of transatlantic relations in the field of environmental governance and climate change. The work focuses on understanding the possible trends in the evolution of global environmental governance and the prospects for breaking the current impasse on climate action. Drawing on research involving experts from eleven different universities and institutes, the authors provide innovative analyses on policy measures taken by the EU and the US, the world’s largest economic and commercial blocs, in a number of fields, ranging from general attitudes on environmental leadership with regard to climate change, to energy policies, new technologies for hydrocarbons extraction and carbon capture, as well as the effects of extreme weather events on climate-related political attitudes. The book examines the way in which the current attitudes of the EU and the US with regard to climate change will affect international cooperation and the building of consensus on possible climate policies, and looks to the future for international environmental governance, arguably one of the most pressing concerns of civilisation today. This book, which is based on research carried out in the context of the EU-financed FP7 research project TRANSWORLD, will appeal to academics, policy makers and practitioners seeking a deeper understanding of the challenges resulting from climate change.
Download or read book Sports Law in the European Union written by Andrea Cattaneo and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this practical analysis of sports law in the European Union deals with the regulation of sports activity by both public authorities and private sports organizations. The growing internationalization of sports inevitably increases the weight of global regulation, yet each country maintains its own distinct regime of sports law and its own national and local sports organizations. Sports law at a national or organizational level thus gains a growing relevance in comparative law. The book describes and discusses both state-created rules and autonomous self-regulation regarding the variety of economic, social, commercial, cultural, and political aspects of sports activities. Self- regulation manifests itself in the form of by-laws, and encompasses organizational provisions, disciplinary rules, and rules of play. However, the trend towards more professionalism in sports and the growing economic, social and cultural relevance of sports have prompted an increasing reliance on legal rules adopted by public authorities. This form of regulation appears in a variety of legal areas, including criminal law, labour law, commercial law, tax law, competition law, and tort law, and may vary following a particular type or sector of sport. It is in this dual and overlapping context that such much-publicized aspects as doping, sponsoring and media, and responsibility for injuries are legally measured. This monograph fills a gap in the legal literature by giving academics, practitioners, sports organizations, and policy makers access to sports law at this specific level. Lawyers representing parties with interests in the European Union will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative sports law.
