Book Governance in Europe

Download or read book Governance in Europe written by Andreas Warntjen and published by Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft. This book was released on 2004 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of governance has increasingly attracted practitioners and scholars of politics and public administration. "Governance" comprises reflections on new forms of public control and regulation, which strive to come to terms with the complex challenges of modern societies. Besides the potential gains in efficiency, governance has immense normative implications due to possible problems of accountability and transparency. The European context provides a particular interesting field of study as it represents an evolving political system. This volume presents an overview of current research on this topic, compromised of both theoretical and empirical studies. Specifically, it addresses questions regarding the role of interest groups in formulating European public policies at the European and the national level. What impact do interests groups have? What determines their influence? What are the empirical and normative implications? By bringing together contributions that approach these questions from different perspectives, the volume offers a stimulating outlook that should inspire further research in the field. It is particularly relevant for students of European integration and interest intermediation in comparative politics.

Book The Congress Oflocal And Regional Authorities adopted Texts 12th Session 31 May to 2 June 2005

Download or read book The Congress Oflocal And Regional Authorities adopted Texts 12th Session 31 May to 2 June 2005 written by Council of Europe Staff and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication brings together the texts adopted by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe. The Congress, a consultative body of the Council of Europe, is made up of two chambers: one representing local authorities, the other the regions. Its aim is to reinforce democratic structures at local and regional level, and in particular to help the newly-emerging democracies in central and eastern Europe. The Congress meets once a year in Strasbourg, and is open to delegations from other European organisations which have consultative status with the Council, as well as to special guests or observers from some countries which are not members of the Organisation. The Congress adopts three different types of texts: recommendations, opinions and resolutions. Recommendations are proposals to the Committee of Ministers, and their application is left up to each member government. Sometimes they are also addressed to other international organisations. Opinions usually refer to questions to the Congress from the Committee of Ministers or the Parliamentary Assembly. The Committee of Ministers and the Parliamentary Assembly consult the Congress on questions which are likely to affect the competence and the basic interests of the local and regional authorities which the Congress represents. Resolutions reflect the décisions that the Congress is authorised to take, or make recommendations to local and/or regional authorities and their associations.

Book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States

Download or read book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.
