Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 3: June, 1913 The adage about showing children and fools unfinished work might be extended to critics and unfinished books, particularly with a book of this character. What might strike a reader as a serious omission or noticeable incompleteness might readily be explained by the editor with the statement that the material in question would be found in another volume. Many topics in ophthalmology might with appearance of propriety be indexed under several different letters of the alphabet. One writer would place them under one word, another under a totally different heading. This fact somewhat limits the value of alphabetic arrangement for convenient reference, at least until one has to some extent mastered the particular book to which he has to refer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 3: November, 1913 Any book so carefully read that both its contents and method of arrangement are mastered can be readily used as a book of reference if its system of arrangement is remembered. But the number of books with which one reader can become thoroughly familiar is quite lim ited. The student who would extend his knowledge more widely and bring together facts not hitherto collected must have other resources. He can do little without indexes, dictionaries, and the ever growing class of books for reference. To gain a first general view of ophthalmology by reading, one does best to study a good text-book carefully from cover to cover. Later a similar book by a different author may be taken and read in the same. Way. But every time this process is repeated it becomes less and less profitable. To master and command the information he obtains from books, each student must develop his own individual arrange ment and association of knowledge. When this has been done the most profitable method of study is, not to confuse his system of ar rangement and association of the facts by the systems developed by others; but to strengthen his own association of ideas by the wise use of books of reference. If one wishes to master the subject of uveal tuberculosis, he will hunt out and read what has been written by different authors on this subject. This reading will be most profitable and done with the best economy of effort, if the reader can bring together those passages which refer to one special phase of the subject, as to the ophthalmo scopic symptoms of the condition; or at another time those dealing with the pathology; or at still another time the results of tuberculin treatment. If one has a case of prolapse of the iris following cataract extraction, he does not wish to read up all that one author has writ ten on the general subject of cataract extraction, but to bring to gether from different sources the best accounts of this particular complication. To this end each available account of the subject may be examined, and the sentences bearing on the particular point, se lected for careful reading and consideration. It is in this way that most of us come to use our medical libraries after we enter upon professional practice. The suggestion is that abstracts should be prepared covering all import ant medical papers, and that these should be brought together in one publication that any medical journal could send out as a kind of sup' plement to its own pages of original matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 3: September, 1913 It is to be hoped that society control of our special journals would lay upon editors a sense of responsibility, a consciousness of judg ment by the profession, that would eliminate some of the most un worthy communications; which seem to be given place in privately controlled journals, simply to fill space and make the journal appear as large as its rivals. It is probable that an editor responsible to his colleagues for the good name of a scientific society in which they had a common interest would be more careful about admitting absolutely worthless papers than one whose responsibility ended with himself. But the success and value of society control will depend on the inter est and active support of the members of the society. Download or read book Ophthalmic Literature Vol 3 written by Edward Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 3: May, 1913 This is one of the series of works issued as a system of ophthalmic practice. And edited by Walter L. Pyle. It therefore corresponds in form to the earlier volumes, Darier's Ophthalmic Therapeutics and the Pathology and Bacteriology of Collins and Mayou. The con sideration of ocular diseases from this standpoint is an extremely practical one. It is symptoms that are first presented to the practic ing ophthalmologist. And from them he must make his advance to a scientific understanding of the pathology. The practical relations and the therapeutics of the case. To learn such a line of thinking. From obvious symptoms to all that they imply, is to become a practical ophthalmologist. This is quite different from studying the phenomena of disease, as they are usually presented in systematic text-books or lectures. Most men that have gotten their knowledge thus organized on the practical basis have accomplished it by watching the daily practice and following the lines of thought of some clinical master. But there is every reason why this should be supplemented by a systematic treatise arranged on these lines. There are many books on medical diagnosis, but so far as we know the claim made in the preface that there is no other separate volume in any language devoted exclusively to ocular semiology is strictly in accordance with the facts. English reading students are to be congratulated that a work of the kind has come from a clinical master like Dr. Beard. No part of it is given to the explanation of instruments and methods of diagnosis. The student must have mas tered the usual methods of ophthalmic examination and made himself familiar with the symptoms dealt with, to get the full benefit of this treatise. The practising Ophthalmologist, even of large experience, will find it of great value in improving his own methods of clinical ex amination and ways of thinking about what he sees. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 6: March, 1916 The recent awakening and activity with regard to the training of the specialist has been due to a realization that this training might be and should be carried well into the domain of his special work, before the practitioner is left wholly to the education of his own practice. In ophthalmology for more than fifty years individual students have sought opportunities in the European clinics, internships in ophthalmic hospitals, or positions as assistants in eye clinics, to gain special and advanced skill, before depending wholly on their past acquirements and powers of self-education; and the superior success of those who have done this has attested the educational value of the method.
