Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, 1917, Vol. 7 The most interesting piece of literature of ophthalmology that has appeared in the month is the first number of the British Journal of Ophthalmology. Its typography is neat, and it is printed on paper of a quality that is scarcely obtainable in America. The careful arrange ment and freedom from proof errors show the experience and devo tion of the editor, Sydney Stephenson, and its sub-editor, E. Erskine Henderson. The editorial committee adequately represents the best writers on ophthalmology, not only of the United Kingdom, but of the whole British Empire. It gives an illustration of the truth set forth in the Foreword that The stress of war has compelled all sorts and conditions of men to ask themselves how can they better utilize their resources and increase the efficiency of their work In countless ways they are finding that 'union is strength.' Download or read book Ophthalmic Literature Vol 5 written by Edward Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 5: November, 1915 It is very true that examinations have been largely directed to ascertaining a candidate's ability to remember and use words, and that such ability is something very different from fitness for ophthalmic practice. It is quite true that examinations can be given, and have been given, in which the recent student actively crammed for the test, although he is quite incompetent for medical practice, makes a better showing than the thoroughly competent, experienced medical practitioner. But that such examinations are possible, or have been, is very far from proving that they are the only kind possible, or that they need to be repeated or perpetuated. A recent writer points out that medical examinations may reach a very close approximation to the tests for actual practice; and where carefully worked out they have done so, as the crammed student has found to his sorrow. Even the written examination which seems to afford the ideal opportunities for cramming can be so modified as to make it an im portant test of real fitness for practice by wisely framed questions. Let us contrast the kind of question that favors the crammed student with one that tests the real ability to focus acquired knowledge on a practical condition.
