Book Ophthalmic Literature Vol 4

Download or read book Ophthalmic Literature Vol 4 written by Edward Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 4: July, 1917 The ambitious purpose of the Ophthalmic Year Book is to rende most easily accessible to English-reading ophthalmologists all that is important with relation to ophthalmology in the year's literature of the world. This is to be accomplished by bringing together what is of importance and separating from it all that is not. In so far as important matter is not brought into the volume it fails of its purpose. In so far as unimportant matter is introduced it fails equally; since all unnecessary matter renders less accessible the thing for which the book is really valuable. Unnecessary matter must include repetition of what has previously been brought to the attention Of the profession, and particularly what has been noticed in previous volumes of the Year Book. Repetition must be avoided. That this is essential becomes more evident with the appearance of each new volume. The successive annual digests of the literature now aggregate pages, while the lists of titles given in the bibliography occupy 611 pages. In search ing the literature for particular topics the importance of keeping it down to the lowest possible limit becomes clearly apparent. Then the matter included within the Year Book must be arranged with the greatest care and according to some simple rigid system. It should be possible to ascertain what of value has been written on a given topic, or that nothing has been written on it, in the period with out giving time to reading pages that do not refer to it. Unless the matter sought has all been grouped together this will not be possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Ophthalmic Literature Vol 3

Download or read book Ophthalmic Literature Vol 3 written by Edward Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 3: June, 1913 The adage about showing children and fools unfinished work might be extended to critics and unfinished books, particularly with a book of this character. What might strike a reader as a serious omission or noticeable incompleteness might readily be explained by the editor with the statement that the material in question would be found in another volume. Many topics in ophthalmology might with appearance of propriety be indexed under several different letters of the alphabet. One writer would place them under one word, another under a totally different heading. This fact somewhat limits the value of alphabetic arrangement for convenient reference, at least until one has to some extent mastered the particular book to which he has to refer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, 1917, Vol. 7 The most interesting piece of literature of ophthalmology that has appeared in the month is the first number of the British Journal of Ophthalmology. Its typography is neat, and it is printed on paper of a quality that is scarcely obtainable in America. The careful arrange ment and freedom from proof errors show the experience and devo tion of the editor, Sydney Stephenson, and its sub-editor, E. Erskine Henderson. The editorial committee adequately represents the best writers on ophthalmology, not only of the United Kingdom, but of the whole British Empire. It gives an illustration of the truth set forth in the Foreword that The stress of war has compelled all sorts and conditions of men to ask themselves how can they better utilize their resources and increase the efficiency of their work In countless ways they are finding that 'union is strength.'
