Book excerpt: Ripped from the pages of the October, 1934 issue of "Operator #5" magazine, here is the lead novel -- Invasion of the Dark Legions! A ghost ship sailed silently through the moon-lit night, manned by a crew of dead men. Jimmy Christopher stands frozen with terror at the sight before his eyes - an evidence of bacteriological warfare, of a foreign dictator's first death-blow at the heart of a nation. It foreshadows the epidemics of ravishing, man-made plagues which are to come - the midnight of a powerful, secret army, already assembled within the land their power-maddened master covets. What vicious undercover emissary plots this wholesale murder? How can Operator 5 hope to save the country he loves from the slave-yoke of a greedy, foreign demagogue?

Book The Operator

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert O'Neill
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2017-04-25
  • ISBN : 1501145053
  • Pages : 411 pages

Download or read book The Operator written by Robert O'Neill and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This instant New York Times bestseller—“a jaw-dropping, fast-paced account” (New York Post) recounts SEAL Team Operator Robert O’Neill’s incredible four-hundred-mission career, including the attempts to rescue “Lone Survivor” Marcus Luttrell and abducted-by-Somali-pirates Captain Richard Phillips, and which culminated in the death of the world’s most wanted terrorist—Osama bin Laden. In The Operator, Robert O’Neill describes his idyllic childhood in Butte, Montana; his impulsive decision to join the SEALs; the arduous evaluation and training process; and the even tougher gauntlet he had to run to join the SEALs’ most elite unit. After officially becoming a SEAL, O’Neill would spend more than a decade in the most intense counterterror effort in US history. For extended periods, not a night passed without him and his small team recording multiple enemy kills—and though he was lucky enough to survive, several of the SEALs he’d trained with and fought beside never made it home. “Impossible to put down…The Operator is unique, surprising, a kind of counternarrative, and certainly the other half of the story of one of the world’s most famous military operations…In the larger sense, this book is about…how to be human while in the very same moment dealing with death, destruction, combat” (Doug Stanton, New York Times bestselling author). O’Neill describes the nonstop action of his deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, evokes the black humor of years-long combat, brings to vivid life the lethal efficiency of the military’s most selective units, and reveals details of the most celebrated terrorist takedown in history. This is “a riveting, unvarnished, and wholly unforgettable portrait of America’s most storied commandos at war” (Joby Warrick).

Book Convex Analysis and Monotone Operator Theory in Hilbert Spaces

Download or read book Convex Analysis and Monotone Operator Theory in Hilbert Spaces written by Heinz H. Bauschke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference text, now in its second edition, offers a modern unifying presentation of three basic areas of nonlinear analysis: convex analysis, monotone operator theory, and the fixed point theory of nonexpansive operators. Taking a unique comprehensive approach, the theory is developed from the ground up, with the rich connections and interactions between the areas as the central focus, and it is illustrated by a large number of examples. The Hilbert space setting of the material offers a wide range of applications while avoiding the technical difficulties of general Banach spaces. The authors have also drawn upon recent advances and modern tools to simplify the proofs of key results making the book more accessible to a broader range of scholars and users. Combining a strong emphasis on applications with exceptionally lucid writing and an abundance of exercises, this text is of great value to a large audience including pure and applied mathematicians as well as researchers in engineering, data science, machine learning, physics, decision sciences, economics, and inverse problems. The second edition of Convex Analysis and Monotone Operator Theory in Hilbert Spaces greatly expands on the first edition, containing over 140 pages of new material, over 270 new results, and more than 100 new exercises. It features a new chapter on proximity operators including two sections on proximity operators of matrix functions, in addition to several new sections distributed throughout the original chapters. Many existing results have been improved, and the list of references has been updated. Heinz H. Bauschke is a Full Professor of Mathematics at the Kelowna campus of the University of British Columbia, Canada. Patrick L. Combettes, IEEE Fellow, was on the faculty of the City University of New York and of Université Pierre et Marie Curie – Paris 6 before joining North Carolina State University as a Distinguished Professor of Mathematics in 2016.

Book K Theory for Operator Algebras

Download or read book K Theory for Operator Algebras written by Bruce Blackadar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: K -Theory has revolutionized the study of operator algebras in the last few years. As the primary component of the subject of "noncommutative topol ogy," K -theory has opened vast new vistas within the structure theory of C* algebras, as well as leading to profound and unexpected applications of opera tor algebras to problems in geometry and topology. As a result, many topolo gists and operator algebraists have feverishly begun trying to learn each others' subjects, and it appears certain that these two branches of mathematics have become deeply and permanently intertwined. Despite the fact that the whole subject is only about a decade old, operator K -theory has now reached a state of relative stability. While there will undoubtedly be many more revolutionary developments and applications in the future, it appears the basic theory has more or less reached a "final form." But because of the newness of the theory, there has so far been no comprehensive treatment of the subject. It is the ambitious goal of these notes to fill this gap. We will develop the K -theory of Banach algebras, the theory of extensions of C*-algebras, and the operator K -theory of Kasparov from scratch to its most advanced aspects. We will not treat applications in detail; however, we will outline the most striking of the applications to date in a section at the end, as well as mentioning others at suitable points in the text.

Book An Operator Theory Problem Book

Download or read book An Operator Theory Problem Book written by Mortad Mohammed Hichem and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for third and fourth year university mathematics students (and Master students) as well as lecturers and tutors in mathematics and anyone who needs the basic facts on Operator Theory (e.g. Quantum Mechanists). The main setting for bounded linear operators here is a Hilbert space. There is, however, a generous part on General Functional Analysis (not too advanced though). There is also a chapter on Unbounded Closed Operators. The book is divided into two parts. The first part contains essential background on all of the covered topics with the sections: True or False Questions, Exercises, Tests and More Exercises. In the second part, readers may find answers and detailed solutions to the True or False Questions, Exercises and Tests.Another virtue of the book is the variety of the topics and the exercises and the way they are tackled. In many cases, the approaches are different from what is known in the literature. Also, some very recent results from research papers are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The galaxy follows a logical structure. Legion Dark Operator Kel Turner believed that. To know the order of battle and how an enemy unit was organized was to know its purpose and how to destroy it. That logic existed down to the smallest scale, down to what made up life itself. To know a molecule's structure was to know its function-they were one and the same. It was no different for Kel. He was Dark Ops and Dark Ops was him. Down to his last cell and very soul. But the covert action arm of the Legion is changing. And so is he. And if Dark Ops is no longer the same, how could Kel be Kel? From fighting a gray war against a cunning adversary bent on genocide, to slogging through a jungle hell full of rabid dog-men, Kel won't stop until the mission is complete. He was his mission. But if the day comes when there would no longer be a Dark Ops for Kel, what would his mission be then? Who would he become? US Army Special Forces veteran Doc Spears together with Anspach & Cole continue Kel's saga in this gripping military sci-fi thriller. Dive in and see the realism of unconventional warriors that has made the Dark Operator series a Galaxy's Edge standout!

Book Theory of Operator Algebras I

Download or read book Theory of Operator Algebras I written by Masamichi Takesaki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics for infinite dimensional objects is becoming more and more important today both in theory and application. Rings of operators, renamed von Neumann algebras by J. Dixmier, were first introduced by J. von Neumann fifty years ago, 1929, in [254] with his grand aim of giving a sound founda tion to mathematical sciences of infinite nature. J. von Neumann and his collaborator F. J. Murray laid down the foundation for this new field of mathematics, operator algebras, in a series of papers, [240], [241], [242], [257] and [259], during the period of the 1930s and early in the 1940s. In the introduction to this series of investigations, they stated Their solution 1 {to the problems of understanding rings of operators) seems to be essential for the further advance of abstract operator theory in Hilbert space under several aspects. First, the formal calculus with operator-rings leads to them. Second, our attempts to generalize the theory of unitary group-representations essentially beyond their classical frame have always been blocked by the unsolved questions connected with these problems. Third, various aspects of the quantum mechanical formalism suggest strongly the elucidation of this subject. Fourth, the knowledge obtained in these investigations gives an approach to a class of abstract algebras without a finite basis, which seems to differ essentially from all types hitherto investigated. Since then there has appeared a large volume of literature, and a great deal of progress has been achieved by many mathematicians.

Book Limit Operators Collective Compactness and the Spectral Theory of Infinite Matrices

Download or read book Limit Operators Collective Compactness and the Spectral Theory of Infinite Matrices written by Simon N. Chandler-Wilde and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first half of this memoir the authors explore the interrelationships between the abstract theory of limit operators (see e.g. the recent monographs of Rabinovich, Roch and Silbermann (2004) and Lindner (2006)) and the concepts and results of the generalised collectively compact operator theory introduced by Chandler-Wilde and Zhang (2002). They build up to results obtained by applying this generalised collectively compact operator theory to the set of limit operators of an operator $A$ (its operator spectrum). In the second half of this memoir the authors study bounded linear operators on the generalised sequence space $\ell^p(\mathbb{Z}^N,U)$, where $p\in [1,\infty]$ and $U$ is some complex Banach space. They make what seems to be a more complete study than hitherto of the connections between Fredholmness, invertibility, invertibility at infinity, and invertibility or injectivity of the set of limit operators, with some emphasis on the case when the operator $A$ is a locally compact perturbation of the identity. Especially, they obtain stronger results than previously known for the subtle limiting cases of $p=1$ and $\infty$.

Book excerpt: The inspiration for the Netflix original movie War Machine, starring Brad Pitt, Tilda Swinton, and Ben Kingsley From the author of The Last Magazine, a shocking behind-the-scenes portrait of our military commanders, their high-stake maneuvers, and the politcal firestorm that shook the United States. In the shadow of the hunt for Bin Laden and the United States’ involvement in the Middle East, General Stanley McChrystal, the commanding general of international and U.S. forces in Afghanistan, was living large. His loyal staff liked to call him a “rock star.” During a spring 2010 trip, journalist Michael Hastings looked on as McChrystal and his staff let off steam, partying and openly bashing the Obama administration. When Hastings’s article appeared in Rolling Stone, it set off a political firestorm: McChrystal was unceremoniously fired. In The Operators, Hastings picks up where his Rolling Stone coup ended. From patrol missions in the Afghan hinterlands to senior military advisors’ late-night bull sessions to hotel bars where spies and expensive hookers participate in nation-building, Hastings presents a shocking behind-the-scenes portrait of what he fears is an unwinnable war. Written in prose that is at once eye-opening and other times uncannily conversational, readers of No Easy Day will take to Hastings’ unyielding first-hand account of the Afghan War and its cast of players.
