Book Operation Overlord Design And Reality The Allied Invasion Of Europe

Download or read book Operation Overlord Design And Reality The Allied Invasion Of Europe written by Dr. Albert Norman and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating in-depth study of the planning for the D-Day landings which set the first Allied troops on the road to Berlin. Dr Norman served with the US 12th Army Group staff during the Second World War under General Omar Bradley, which put him in an expert position to tell the story of the exhaustive preparations that went into the Normandy invasion on 6th June 1944. ‘“Overlord” was unquestionably, as of this writing, the largest overseas military operation ever undertaken. In the pages which follow, Dr. Albert Norman presents, insofar as it can be compressed within one easily readable volume, a careful history of the planning which made its achievement possible and of the operation itself. Dr. Norman’s topic is absorbing, both for its historical interest and for the lessons it holds for those who, perhaps unfortunately, must be concerned with the possibility of “Overlords” yet to come. It holds yet another and even more important interest. The staff groups which contributed to the success of “Overlord” and the ultimate defeat of Germany were the exemplification of an idea of allied unity, developed by General Eisenhower and perfected to such an extent that it has become the symbol of successful international cooperation.’—General Walter Bedell Smith

Download or read book Gators of Neptune written by Christopher D. Yung and published by US Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A research analyst for the Center for Naval Analyses offers a rare historical account of the Royal and U.S. Navies' involvement in one of the greatest amphibious assaults of modern history. It is a story of cooperation and, at times, discord, between the two navies as they planned the naval portion of the Allied invasion of Normandy. With the evolution of amphibious warfare as a backdrop, the book has sufficient technical detail to satisfy the modern day practitioner of amphibious warfare, yet is written in a style that makes it accessible to the general public. Thoroughly researched at the U.S. National Archives and the Naval Historical Center, the book takes the reader from the initial plans created by the Anglo-American Allies in 1942, through the first draft of Operation Overlord, to the final naval plan set down in 1944. It then presents a detailed description of the invasion itself. Christopher Yung covers every obstacle confronted by the naval planners, from the shifting tides of the English Channel to overcoming the European coastal defenses and dealing with the submarine threat. Despite his attention to historical detail, he brings to life the personalities of those who brought Operation Neptune from concept to reality.

The following year, the Germans occupied France and Western Europe and launched a vicious air war against Britain. In 1941, they invaded the Soviet Union. Seemingly unstoppable, the Nazis now held virtually all of Europe. They imposed a ruthless system of control and unleashed the horror of the Holocaust. However, by 1943, the tide had begun to turn in favor of the Allies, the forces opposed to Germany. In the east, despite huge losses, the Soviets began to force the Germans back.

Book D Day

Download or read book D Day written by Bernard C. Nalty and published by Combined Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The drama and tragedy of the D-Day landings of June 6, 1944 have, in recent months, been the subject of great popular interest. A generation used to several decades of "low-intensity" warfare had forgotten the horrors of large-scale battles fought with modern weapon. While many veterans of the landings are only now getting their just recognition and many personal experiences have been revealed, questions remain about the military strategy and tactics involved. While not losing sight of the human drama, D-Day examines in chapter-by-chapter fashion the development of the campaign and the military principles involved. What lessons were learned at Normandy? What principles of war were followed or failed to be followed? What failures at the planning and execution levels led to the fearsome casualties on Omaha Beach? These and many other aspects of one of history's most famous battles are examined in this detailed account.

Book excerpt: This outstanding overview of D-Day makes clear its great importance in military and world history, identifies mistakes committed on both sides, and explains all aspects of the 1944 Allied invasion of France and the Normandy Campaign that followed. The beach landings at Normandy, France, in June of 1944 were of critical importance in the outcome of World War II, and as a consequence, served to determine the economic and political state of the modern world as we know it. This latest reference book edited by esteemed historian Spencer C. Tucker supplies easy-to-understand overview entries on the Normandy Invasion ("Operation OVERLORD") and the European Theater in World War II as well as entries treating specific topics such as key individuals, technical innovations, weapons systems, command structures, terrain and logistical difficulties, and the role played by weather. Readers will come to understand why the eventual success of the Allied forces in the D-Day operations was so hard-fought and came at a tremendous cost of life. The book addresses the immense difficulty of supplying tens of thousands of soldiers--many of them inexperienced in combat--and countless tons of equipment and vehicles to the invasion force from over the beaches, after most of the teams landed in the wrong locations, and when many command structures were wiped out almost immediately upon landing; and it explains how these factors impacted the combat on the ground and resulted in the Allied forces' careful planning going awry. The book also describes the elaborate deception carried out by the Allies regarding the invasion landing site and how these efforts impacted battle developments, and it presents nine primary documents that treat various aspects of the battle, including the lengthy Allied plan for the invasion and primary sources of directives regarding the battle and technical innovations.

Book D Day Day by Day

Book excerpt: The hardcover reference titles in the Day by Day series examine the evolution of conflicts and wars in a chronological timeline, from the first skirmish to the last battle--and everything in between. These books are a historical companion to each major war in the nineteenth and twentieth century. The fate of soldiers, battalions, armies, can change in the blink of an eye--with this comprehensive book readers can follow the conflicting sides in their strategy, weaponry, and policies. "D-Day: Day by Day" is a chronological approach to the operation, allowing the reader to see at a glance the preparations made for the invasion of Normandy, as well as the key actions on the beaches and further inland. While the major actions dominate the text, eyewitness accounts and other stories are used to highlight actions of individual bravery and courage that, although they may not have been defining moments in the invasion, were an integral part of the overall effort, and provide an excellent guide to the human sacrifices made in order to achieve final victory. In addition to the blow-by-blow account of the action during these crucial days, the book features boxes on all the key personalities involved, including Eisenhower and Montgomery. There are also descriptions of the decisive weapons used by both the Allies and the Germans, and the key actions that were pivotal in the early days of the invasion.

Book D Day 1944 Air Power Over The Normandy Beaches And Beyond Illustrated Edition

This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes over 12 photos and maps of the Overlord Operations Operation Overlord, the Normandy invasion-like William the Conqueror's before it or the Inchon landing afterwards-will long be studied as a classic in military planning, logistics, and operations. OVERLORD depended to a remarkable degree upon the use of air power in virtually all its forms. A half-century ago, aircraft were primitive vehicles of war compared to the modern attackers of the Gulf War era, with their precision weapons, advanced navigational, sensor systems, and communications. Yet, the airplane still had a profound impact upon the success of the invasion. Simply stated, without air power, Normandy would have been impossible.

Book Validating the Joint Doctrine Air Campaign Course Planning Process

Download or read book Validating the Joint Doctrine Air Campaign Course Planning Process written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German reserves had arrived far too late to smash the enemy landing by counterattacks. By the time they arrived the enemy had disembarked considerably stronger forces and himself gone over to the attack.' Field Marshal Erwin Kommel The inability of the Germans to bring their reserve forces forward was due to the Allies' air operations prior to D-Day. The USAF's Joint Doctrine Air Campaign Course advocates a five stage planning process for air asset employment at the Operational level. The five stages are: Stage 1, an intelligence preparation of the theater of operations; Stage 2, objective determination; Stage 3, strategy identification; Stage 4, identifying centers of gravity; Stage 5, the air campaign plan. This process was used by the USAF to build the air operations during Desert Shield and Desert Storm and the success of those operations served as a foundation for the USAF's contention that this five stage planning process is appropriate. One war does not validate a planning process. To validate this process, I have applied the framework to the Allied air operations prior to the Normandy invasion. A valid framework for planning must be applicable to other operations. The success or failure of those operations should be re-enforced or identified by this planning framework. Overall, the Allies used a similar process prior to Normandy. The JDACC five stage planning process provides a solid foundation for air asset Operational planning. Each of the stages must be accomplished to effectively employ airpower. There are not any gaps in the framework. These stages are independent of technology, equipment, training and valid regardless of service doctrine. The JDACC planning guide is an excellent tool for Operational planning for both deliberate and crisis action planning.

Book Developing a Theory for Dynamic Campaign Planning

Download or read book Developing a Theory for Dynamic Campaign Planning written by Edward J. Filiberti and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a theoretical paper on campaign planning. The paper examines the processes and principles involved in campaign plan formulation and modification within the context of all three levels of war. A series of theoretical models are used to describe the nature of war, the development and role of doctrine, and the ends, ways and means of war at the strategic, operational and tactical levels. The paradigms postulated describe war and operational concepts based primarily on an analogy using the physical concepts of energy and power. The proposed analogy physical concepts of energy and power. The proposed analogy differs somewhat from the Clausewitzian-Newtonian model which was based upon force and mass. The postulated models discriminate between the three levels of war and portray the role and influence that commanders at each level have on battle outcome. The majority of the paper focuses on the operational level of war and related concepts. The concepts of center of gravity, decisive points, selection of objectives, battlefield geometry and offensive and defensive culminating points are all discussed and defined. The Normandy Operation is described in detail in an appendix and is used to further illustrate the concepts of centers of gravity and decisive points as they pertain to a phased operation covering air, land and sea. The monograph ends with a detailed analysis of the role of initiative as a focus for operational planning. The paper concludes with the finding that gaining and retaining the operational initiative is the quintessence of campaigning and the practice of operational art.
