Book excerpt: There is a limited understanding of the reproductive biology of yelloweye rockfish (Sebastes ruberrimus) and black rockfish (S. melanops) in Alaskan waters. The purpose of this project is to sample yelloweye rockfish and black rockfish in order to estimate maturity schedules (length and age at maturity) and fecundity (both absolute and relative). An increased understanding of the reproductive biology of these rockfish species is necessary for science-based management and population dynamics modeling for stock assessment purposes. This project will generate estimates of these important biological parameters for these rockfish at the northernmost extent of their range. Sampling will take place in Prince William Sound and the Northern Gulf of Alaska, including the North Gulf Coast Management Area.

The overall purpose of this project is to estimate the length and age maturity schedules for females of black rockfish (Sebastes melanops) and yelloweye rockfish (S. ruberrimus) across the Gulf of Alaska; document sampling protocols for future collection, identification, preservation, and processing of yelloweye and black rockfish gonads; and collect samples related to a population’s reproductive potential (i.e., age, length, fecundity, fish condition, etc.). Efforts will be divided between inside Prince William Sound (PWS) waters and Northern Gulf of Alaska waters (NGOA). Sampling goals for ROP.SF.2A.2019.09 have been met for yelloweye rockfish in NGOA and PWS. Sampling goals for female black rockfish have not been met for PWS or NGOA. This amendment to ROP.SF.2A.2019.09, which was scheduled to end in 2020, documents an extension to the timeframe of data collection to 2022 for collection of female black rockfish maturity data in Prince William Sound and NGOA.

Promises were then made that nuclear energy would provide electricity so cheap that it would not need metering, pesticides would end malnutrition throughout the world and plastics and other synthetic chemicals would revolutionise our manufacturing industry and our way of life. Whilst some of these promises have been fulfilled, the problems of long-term health risks to humans and wildlife arising from the use, production and disposal of these products were either unknown or deliberately understated. Nuclear power is rendered economically unviable when the real cost of decommissioning and storage of waste for several millenia is included, and the effects on health of both humans and wildlife of early pest eradication programmes with organochlorine pesticides were well documented in Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring". Evidence of the effects of aerosols and refrigerants on depletion of the ozone layer has led to restriction on the use of CFCs, and there is now increasing evidence of climate change resulting from our profligate use of fossil fuels.

Book excerpt: The book is based on results from the Russian expedition in the region of the Antarctic Peninsula and Powell Basin in the northern part of the Weddell Sea, as well as on the review of earlier research in the region. The main goal of the research was to collect the newest data and study the physical properties and ecology of this key region of the Southern Ocean. Data analysis is supplemented with numerical modeling of the atmosphere-ocean interaction and circulation in the adjacent region, including research on rogue waves. The focus of the study was the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, currents and water properties in the Bransfield Strait and Antarctic Sound, properties of seawater, currents, ecosystem and biological communities in the Powell Basin of the northwestern Weddell Sea, and their variations. An attempt is made to reveal the role of various components of the Antarctic environment in the formation of biological productivity and maintenance of the Antarctic krill population. This is especially important as in the last decades the Antarctic environment has experienced significant changes related to the global climatic trends.
