Book excerpt: A weir will be used on the Buskin River to count the inriver coho salmon run, with harvest estimated by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game statewide harvest survey, returned subsistence permits, and commercial fish tickets. Age and sex information will be collected from the Buskin River coho salmon run, and the composition of the run by age and sex will be estimated. In addition, coho salmon escapements to 9 other drainages on the Kodiak road system (KRS) will also be indexed. Sustainable escapement goals (SEGs) associated with the American, Olds, and Pasagshak Rivers will be monitored via postseason escapement foot surveys. A simultaneous postseason drone survey will also be conducted on the American and Olds Rivers to continue exploring establishment of drone-based SEGs. Multiple inseason surveys will be conducted by drone at each of the Olds, American, and Pasagshak river drainages to provide inseason run information to fishery managers; the inseason data will also be used to explore new ways of establishing SEGs for the Pasagshak River. Postseason escapement foot surveys will be conducted for the remaining 6 KRS rivers without SEGs (Monashka Creek, Pillar Creek, Sargent Creek, Russian Creek, Salonie Creek, and Roslyn River). The Pasagshak River coho salmon escapement will also be estimated with a temporally stratified mark–recapture study.

Book excerpt: A creel survey will be conducted to estimate sport angler effort, catch, and harvest of large (≥75 cm mid eye to tail fork length) early- and late-run Chinook salmon in the lower Kenai River between the Warren Ames Bridge (river mile [RM] 5.1) and Slikok Creek sanctuary area (RM 18.6). Creel survey estimates will be geographically stratified in relation to the RM 13.7 Kenai River Chinook salmon sonar to provide angler effort, catch, and harvest of large Chinook salmon. A standardized inriver netting project will be conducted in the Kenai River at RM 8.6 to index abundance and estimate the age, sex, and length (ASL) composition of large early- and late-run Chinook salmon. Inseason estimates of Chinook salmon catch and harvest, used in conjunction with sonar passage estimates, inseason catch rates, and the length of returning Chinook salmon from the inriver netting study are used by fisheries managers for inseason management decisions to achieve escapement goals. This plan covers the creel survey and inriver netting studies for the 2021–2023 seasons.

Drift gillnets will be employed in the Kenai River to capture and tag adult coho salmon with radio transmitters. Radiotelemetry will be used to uniquely identify and track tagged coho salmon to spawning destinations. Up to 490 radio transmitters will be deployed annually between August 1 and October 31 each year. Movements of radiotagged coho salmon will be documented using a combination of fixed data-logging receiver stations and mobile tracking using boats and fixed-wing aircraft. This project will be the 2nd and 3rd year of a 3-year collaboration between the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). The USFWS conducted the first year of the project in 2022, and ADF&G and USFWS will be collaborating on the radiotelemetry project in 2023 and 2024.

Book excerpt: The Battle Creek coho salmon escapement project will provide daily and season-cumulative video weir counts of adult coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), a weekly and annual index of coho salmon escapement, and a catch-per-unit-effort index of the abundance of juvenile coho salmon. These estimates will be used by the Alaska Energy Authority (AEA) to fulfill a Fish and Habitat Management Implementation Plan (FHMIP) ordered by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to monitor the adult and juvenile coho salmon populations in Battle Creek before and after creek diversion to assess whether a population decline has occurred (FERC 2016). Additionally, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) Division of Sport Fish (SF) will use these data to better understand the size of coho salmon runs on the south side of Kachemak Bay and how these populations may be able to support sport fishing opportunities.

The Deshka River weir has operated seasonally since 1995. A floating, resistance-board-weir is used at river mile (RM) 7 to enumerate Chinook and coho salmon and to collect age, sex, and length data from these species. The Deshka River sustainable escapement goal (SEG) range is currently 9,000–18,000 fish for Chinook salmon and 10,200–24,100 fish for coho salmon. Data collected at this weir are used to manage sport and commercial fisheries inseason and to develop and evaluate escapement goals. This project is also used as a platform to collect harvest data upstream of RM 7, passage data of other fish species, environmental data, and it provides recapture data for the greater Susitna River drainage Chinook salmon mark–recapture project.

This project estimates adipose finclip quality and weight composition for Chinook and coho salmon smolt releases. The success of stocking hatchery smolt depends on numerous variables, many associated with the hatchery program. Marking, data collection, and reporting are monitored and standardized for each release so that meaningful comparisons can be made among hatchery releases. Meaningful comparisons may in turn allow project managers to better understand factors critical to the success of smolt stocking projects and to improve existing programs.

This plan covers sonar project operations at Kenai RM 13.7 and Kasilof RM 8 for the 2023–2025 seasons with the goal of producing daily inseason net passage estimates of fish 75 cm or longer for the Kenai River and postseason net upstream passage estimates of fish 75 cm or longer for the Kasilof river.

Book excerpt: In 2020-2024, Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) will be enumerated at 2 Anchor River sites from mid-May through early August to monitor escapement for the drainage. The south fork site, located at approximately river kilometer (RKM) 4.0, will be monitored by an Adaptive Resolution Imaging Sonar (ARIS) during high flow periods, and a resistance board weir fitted with underwater video will be used thereafter. The north fork site, located at about RKM 5.3, will be monitored by a resistance board weir with underwater video from the beginning of the Chinook salmon run in early May. Motion-detection technology will be used at each weir to record fish passage 24 hours per day. Weekly beach seine surveys will be used to capture Chinook salmon for age-sex-length (ASL) samples downstream of the confluence of the south and north forks. Chinook salmon data will be used to update estimates of the spawner-recruit relationship and harvest rate, and to provide inseason run information to managers. Coho salmon and steelhead will also be monitored in the fall of each year using the resistance board weir and video system on each fork. Coho salmon age, sex, and length will be collected via beach seining. Coho salmon escapement and harvest rate will be estimated along with an index of steelhead abundance and catch rate.
