Download or read book Operational Plan East Cook Inlet Razor Clam Stock Assessment 2021 2023 written by Michael D. Booz and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study continues long-term monitoring of Pacific razor clam (Siliqua patula) abundances, age and length compositions, growth, and the sport and personal use (SPU) fishery information on east Cook Inlet beaches. These monitoring activities are used to assess the status and productivity of the east Cook Inlet razor clam stocks to support management actions for the SPU fishery in the Ninilchik and Clam Gulch management areas. Adult razor clam abundances will be used to determine if the stock is sufficient in each management area to support harvest opportunities. Age and length compositions, growth, natural mortality, and recruitment data will all be used in indices of stock productivity for each management area. If the SPU fishery is opened in either management area, digger counts and success surveys will assess razor clam effort and harvest.

If the fishery opens in 2020, digger distribution and success surveys will assess effort and harvest during a limited fishery.

Book Eastside Cook Inlet Razor Clam Stock Assessment 2009 2015

Download or read book Eastside Cook Inlet Razor Clam Stock Assessment 2009 2015 written by Carol M. Kerkvliet and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eastside Cook Inlet Pacific razor clam (Siliqua patula) stock and the combined sport and personal use (SPU) razor clam fishery were assessed from 2009 through 2015 and compared to standardized historical data sets. Significant declines were detected in harvest, effort, age and length compositions, and abundance. From 2009 to 2012, the average overall Eastside SPU fishery harvest was 54% below the historical average, and effort declined 23% with the same comparison. Both harvest and effort were greatest in subareas within the Ninilchik Management Area. For all subareas, average annual age and length compositions from hand-dug samples were “truncated” compared to historical averages because they had fewer cohorts composed of younger and smaller sizes. Juvenile, adult, and total clam abundances in 2013–2015 were well below their respective historical average abundances at all but one subarea where abundance was assessed. These declines led to emergency order restrictions to the Eastside SPU razor clam fishery in 2013 and 2014 and the closure of the fishery in 2015. Continued monitoring will be required to assess when this stock is able to support sustainable harvest opportunities.

Book Cook Inlet Razor Clam Study 2013

Download or read book Cook Inlet Razor Clam Study 2013 written by Carol M. Kerkvliet and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beaches along the east side of Cook Inlet provide the largest sport fishery for the Pacific razor clam, Siliqua patula (Dixon) in Alaska. Potential over-exploitation continues to be a concern at Ninilchik because exploitation rates peak periodically at higher levels between recruitment events. Pacific razor clam studies along 6 eastern Cook Inlet beaches will be conducted to estimate clam digger distribution, and clam harvest by beach. Harvest by age will be estimated at Cohoe, Clam Gulch, Oil Pad Access, and Ninilchik beaches. Razor clam abundance will be estimated on a section of the Ninilchik South Beach.

Book The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2020

Download or read book The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2020 written by FAO and published by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2020 edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture has a particular focus on sustainability. This reflects a number of specific considerations. First, 2020 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (the Code). Second, several Sustainable Development Goal indicators mature in 2020. Third, FAO hosted the International Symposium on Fisheries Sustainability in late 2019, and fourth, 2020 sees the finalization of specific FAO guidelines on sustainable aquaculture growth, and on social sustainability along value chains. While Part 1 retains the format of previous editions, the structure of the rest of the publication has been revised. Part 2 opens with a special section marking the twenty fifth anniversary of the Code. It also focuses on issues coming to the fore, in particular, those related to Sustainable Development Goal 14 and its indicators for which FAO is the “custodian” agency. In addition, Part 2 covers various aspects of fisheries and aquaculture sustainability. The topics discussed range widely, from data and information systems to ocean pollution, product legality, user rights and climate change adaptation. Part 3 now forms the final part of the publication, covering projections and emerging issues such as new technologies and aquaculture biosecurity. It concludes by outlining steps towards a new vision for capture fisheries. The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture aims to provide objective, reliable and up-to-date information to a wide audience – policymakers, managers, scientists, stakeholders and indeed everyone interested in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

Book Selection and Breeding Programs in Aquaculture

Download or read book Selection and Breeding Programs in Aquaculture written by Trygve Gjedrem and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-04-13 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although aquaculture as a biological production system has a long history, systematic and efficient breeding programs to improve economically important traits in the farmed species have rarely been utilized until recently, except for salmonid species. This means that the majority of aquaculture production (more than 90 %) is based on genetically unimproved stocks. In farm animals the situation is vastly different: practically no terrestrial farm production is based on genetically unimproved and undomesticated populations. This difference between aquaculture and livestock production is in spite of the fact that the basic elements of breeding theory are the same for fish and shellfish as for farm animals. One possible reason for the difference is the complexity of reproductive biology in aquatic species, and special consideration needs to be taken in the design of breeding plans for these species. Since 1971 AKVAFORSK, has continuously carried out large scale breeding research projects with salmonid species, and during the latest 15 years also with a number of fresh water and marine species. Results from this work and the results from other institutions around the world have brought forward considerable knowledge, which make the development of efficient breeding programs feasible. The genetic improvement obtained in selection programs for fish and shellfish is remarkable and much higher than what has been achieved in terrestrial farm animals.

Book Microbicides for the Protection of Materials

Download or read book Microbicides for the Protection of Materials written by W. Paulus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1993-09-30 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is chiefly intended for those who are using microbicides for the protection of materials. Another purpose is to inform teachers and students working on biodeterioration and to show today's technical standard to those engaged in R&D activities in the microbicide field. When trying to classify, or to subclassify, material-protecting microbicides according to their mode of action, e.g. as membrane-active and electrophilic active ingredients, it turned out that a clear assignment was not always possible. For that reason the author has resorted to chemistry's principle of classifying according to groups of substances (e.g. alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, acids, esters, amides, etc.), thus providing the first necessary information about the micro bicides' properties. The description of the various groups of substances includes, whenever possible, an outline of the mode and mechanism of action of the active ingredients involved. The effective use of microbicides presupposes knowledge of their character istics. That is why the microbicides' chemico-physical properties, their toxicity, ecotoxicity, effectiveness, and effective spectrum are described in greater detail. As mentioned before, the characteristics of microbicides play an important role. They have to be suited to the intended application to avoid detrimental effects on the properties and the quality of the material to be protected; also production processes in which microbicides are used to avoid disturbances by microbial action must not be disturbed by the presence of those microbicides.

Book The Forty Rules of Love

Download or read book The Forty Rules of Love written by Elif Shafak and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-02-18 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lyrical, exuberant tale, acclaimed Turkish author Elif Shafak, author of The Island of Missing Trees (a Reese's Book Club Pick), incarnates Rumi's timeless message of love The Forty Rules of Love unfolds two tantalizing parallel narratives—one contemporary and the other set in the thirteenth century, when Rumi encountered his spiritual mentor, the whirling dervish known as Shams of Tabriz—that together explore the enduring power of Rumi's work. Ella Rubenstein is forty years old and unhappily married when she takes a job as a reader for a literary agent. Her first assignment is to read and report on Sweet Blasphemy, a novel written by a man named Aziz Zahara. Ella is mesmerized by his tale of Shams's search for Rumi and the dervish's role in transforming the successful but unhappy cleric into a committed mystic, passionate poet, and advocate of love. She is also taken with Shams's lessons, or rules, that offer insight into an ancient philosophy based on the unity of all people and religions, and the presence of love in each and every one of us. As she reads on, she realizes that Rumi's story mirrors her own and that Zahara—like Shams—has come to set her free.

Book Introduction to Food Toxicology

Download or read book Introduction to Food Toxicology written by Takayuki Shibamoto and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area of food toxicology currently has a high profile of interest in the food industry, universities, and government agencies, and is certainly of great concern to consumers. There are many books which cover selected toxins in foods (such as plant toxins, mycotoxins, pesticides, or heavy metals), but this book represents the first pedagogic treatment of the entire range of toxic compounds found naturally in foods or introduced by industrial contamination or food processing methods. Featuring coverage of areas of vital concern to consumers, such as toxicological implications of food adulteration (as seen in ethylene glycol in wines or the Spanish olive oil disaster) or pesticide residues, Introduction to Food Toxicology will be of interest to students in toxicology, environmental studies, and dietetics as well as anyone interested in food sources and public health issues. The number of students who are interested in toxicology has increased dramatically in the past several years. Issues related to toxic materials have received more and more attention from the public. The issues and potential problems are reported almost daily by the mass media, including television, newspapers, and magazines. Major misunderstandings and confusion raised by those reports are generally due to lack of basic knowledge about toxicology among consumers. This textbook provides the basic principles of food toxicology in order to help the general public better understand the real problems of toxic materials in foods. Principles of toxicology Toxicities of chemicals found in foods Occurrence of natural toxins in plant and animal foodstuffs Food contamination caused by industry Toxic chemicals related to food processing Food additives Microbial toxins in foods

Eventually—without the benefit of formal training in wildlife management or ecology—he become one of the world’s leading experts on brown bears, the product of an unprecedented experiment in peaceful coexistence. This book celebrates Aumiller’s achievement, telling the story of his decades with the bears alongside his own remarkable photographs. As both professional wildlife managers and ordinary citizens alike continue to struggle to bridge the gap between humans and the wild creatures we’ve driven out, In Wild Trust is an inspiring account of what we can achieve.

Book Until The Sea Shall Free Them

Download or read book Until The Sea Shall Free Them written by Robert Frump and published by Random House. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1983, the freighter Marine Electric ran into a violent storm off the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. Despite Force 10 conditions and fifty feet waves the crew were unconcerned: the ship had survived worse. But something was wrong, the ship was beginning to break up under them; gradually it began to go down by the head, then to capsize. Within two hours the crew were in the water in a desperate struggle for their lives. Their plight sparked one of the most dramatic air-sea rescues in maritime history. Only three of the 34 crew survived the night. The ship had sunk due to a serious structural defect. The chief mate Bob Cusick discovered that the owners had lost several other ships in similar circumstances to the Marine Electric, but the sinkings had been covered up. He decided to go after the company and they in turn rounded on him, the sole surviving officer. What follows is an epic and epochal court case that left none of the participants unscarred.
