Book excerpt: The objective of this test was to determine the aerial surveillance capabilities, during the hours of daylight and darkness, of the indium antimonide detector cell when employed in the AN/AAS-5 (XE-1) infrared detecting set. The indium antimonide detector cell is a diffused photovoltaic infrared detector which responds to infrared wavelengths from 1 to 5.5 microns with a peak at 5.0 microns when cooled to liquid nitrogen temperatures ( -196 C). Test results indicated: (1) Usable data, during the hours of darkness, could not be obtained due to microphonics in the preamplifiers and insufficient gaseous nitrogen cooling. (2) By changing preamplifiers and using direct liquid nitrogen cooling the results obtained were vastly improved. (3) Resolution in the AN/AAS-5 (XE-1) was approximately 10 mils. (4) Maintenance consisted only of replacing an allen-head screw. (5) When properly cooled, the cell's detection capabilities were good. (Author).

The grown junction portion of the program was undertaken to improve fabrication and packaging techniques, to minimize leaks, to maximize outgassing absorption, to maximize detector ruggedness, to simplify bottle design and closure, and to determine in-process and final detector characteristics in relation to InSb grown junction basic parameters. The diffused junction detector portion of this program was undertaken to determine whether diffused batch fabricated mesa arrays could be produced as a replacement for the grown junction detector now used, and to refine critical processing steps required to manufacture these arrays. Three grown junction detectors and three diffused junction detectors were fabricated, tested and delivered as a part of the contract. (Author).

Four design variations were processed using this planar structure. The best performance at an injection voltage of 2 V and an integration time of 55 microsec gave a noise level of 1000 carriers for the array alone after correcting for the preamplifier noise of 1450 carriers. The saturation charge was 2.3 x 10 to the 7th power carriers at 2 V, the lag was 6%, the cross talk was 3%, and the performance efficiency was about 65%. Dark currents were generally less than 3 nA and there was no rapid increase in dark current for injection voltages at least as large as 2.4 volts implying that larger injection voltages and well capacities are possible. The array performance demonstrated in this program fully meets the specifications of the Navy IRST program.
