Lindberg and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A radio-ecological survey of the area adjacent to Nevada Proving Grounds has been in progress intermittently from September 1951 to July 1953. Samples have been taken periodically of native soils, plants, and animals before, during, and after various test series at distances up to 30 miles from respective Ground Zeros. Data suggest that microcurie levels of radioactive fall-out are potentially available for absorption and/or metabolism by grazing animals at distances at least 15 miles from Ground Zero during the 24 hr following a detonation. The persistence of absorbed radioactive materials in rodent populations, as compared to the radioactive content of their isolated tissues, suggests that absorption is primarily a result of physical diffusion of available ions rather than actual metabolic selection and retention of the mixed fission products ingested or inhaled. Absorbed radioactive materials, therefore, appear to be in equilibrium with certain components of residual environmental contamination during the 90 days following a detonation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project 27.1 of the Civil Effects Test Group performed detailed studies of the physical phenomenon of fall-out to provide information basic to the proper evaluation of the possible hazards associated with fall-out. The project functioned during Shots 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 of Operation Upshot-Knothole; samples and measurements were taken along existing trails and roads which crossed the various fall-out patterns at distances greater than 10 miles from Ground Zero. Book excerpt: Underground earth-covered shelters were exposed G to a 16.4-kt, 300-ft tower shot at ranges of 1230 ft (one), 1450 ft (one), 1860 ft (five), and 3506 ft (one). Two types of basement shelters were constructed in each of the test houses at 3500 and 7500 ft. Instrumentation was by gammaradiation badges, paraffin cubes, and nylon swatches. Attempts were made to measure permanent deflections of concrete roof slabs. Mannequins were placed in several shelters for purposes of demonstration and observation of blast-caused movement. A weighted mannequin in the underground shelter at 1230 it was broken in half; an unweighted one (child size) was thrown to the floor. All other mannequins remained in place, undamaged. Paraffin cubes and nylon swntches showed no evidence of thermal damage. Fallout conditions made it impossible to determine initial gamma-radiation quantities. There was no cracking or permanent deflection of the concrete roof slabs. Except for a wood-covered, trench type shelter, which partially failed because of faulty construction, the shelters showed no blast damage. Thermal energy entering the shelters probably would not have caused skin burns to human occupants. Adequacy of the shelters under full design loads could not be determined because pressures were lower than expected, but the shelter designs were structurally acceptable under test pressures received. Book excerpt: A representative selection of 42 common drug preparations was exposed to the action of nuclear radiation and blast at two shots in the Upshot-Knothole series in Nevada in the spring of 1953. The drugs were packaged in the form in which they would be found on drugstore shelves and were exposed to various levels of neutron and gamma radiation ranging up to 50,000 r. Insulin and vitamin B/sub 12/ were reduced in potency by about 10 and 50 per cent, respectively, but no other preparation tested showed any deterioration. Some of the drugs showed a moderate level of induced radioactivity. This activity was traced either to an actual mineral constituent of the drug itself, as in the case of thiopental sodium, or to an excipient, such as calcium phosphate used in aureomycin. However, the level of activity was so low that little or no radiological health hazard would be involved in the normal use of the exposed drugs, although those with a high sodium content should be allowed to cool for several days before using them. Any drags in containers remaining physically undamaged at a distince of 1000 yd from the explosion of a nominal atomic bomb are considered entirely safe for immediate use. Under heavy exposure the glass containers in which the drugs were packaged displayed strong but short-lived activity due to their sodium content. Clear glass also showed a marked darkening. None of the closures failed, and none of the closure materials deteriorated chenflcally or biologically under the conditions of the tests. (auth).
